Title: What bands never sucked?
Post by: Arrrhalomynn on June 14, 2004, 03:48:45 AM
Almost every band I know, that has made more than a few albums started to suck.  The clash started sucking with sandinista, The ramones had 4 good albums, even the beatles started to make crappy psychidellic music!

Is there ANY band that never sucked? And then I mean a band that churned out a good deal of albums. Making 1 album and then breaking up doesn't count here.

The only 'always good' band I can think of are the beastie boys. But they take 4 to 5 years for an album, and I haven't heard their new album yet.

Good topic.

This one is really hard, though.  I can't really comment on the Beastie Boys since I'm not a huge fan of their work in general (though I don't dislike it mugh either).  The Beatles, Metallica, Pink Floyd, the Stones, The Offspring, etc., etc. all sucked at one point or another.

Everything Elliott Smith ever put out was top-notch quality, but he was a solo artist, so I dunno if he counts for this topic...  and he didnt have THAT long of a career.  Just four or five albums.

I'm going to have to think about this one for a while.

I don't really listen to enough of the same music to have an expert opinion but, here is my only choice:

The Scorpions. like it or leave it.

The scorpions sucked from the moment they were formed. My brother likes them. Has a bunch of cd's and dvd's. As a result, I can't stand them. Especially the way they are now. A bunch of 50 year old germans faking to be hip. brrrrrrr.

Tool has yet to make a crap album! I find it hard to find many other bands that haven't gone through a suck stage,. but this one is suck free.

The closest band that I can think of is Megadeth.  Outside of Risk, all of thier albums have been outstanding.

I can't think of a Rush album that sucks. Some of their 80's and 90's albums were more pop than conceptual but each had a number of outstanding songs.

I can't think of a Led Zeppelin album that sucks either. Now Robert Plants solo stuff, well that's another matter.

I will go with Den on the Rush thing as well. Rush is just...well.... Rush!

looking back at the original post I'm going to disagree that the Beatles ever sucked. the 2 albums that could be considered "psychadelic" are Sgt. Peppers and Magical Mystery Tour, maybe Yellow Submarine. While a far cry from the likes of "She Loves You" and "I want to hold your hand" those are still great albums. The White Albun is strange but I don't think I'd call it psychadelic.

even the later ones when they all hated each other and were on the verge of breakup are outstanding. I'm talking about Abbey Road and Let it Be.

The Beastie Boys may have ended their streak with To the 5 Burroughs.

Another band I can't find a stinker for is the Doors.

I don't like Systems first CD as much as their others Beastie Boys started to fade into badness,
IMO (people are sure to disagree)
Likin Park & Limp Bizket are 2 that could be added. I like all of their stuff.

Also agree with Floyd, Weezer, Metallica and Zepplin.

Jimi Hendrix, though he wasn't around long enough to suck.

Systems first CD might not be as good but it is not bad.

I strongly disagree with Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit and I would like to state the opposite: All their albums suck.

excellent choice! he wasn't around long but the volume of work from that short time is enormous.

technically only there were only 3 "official" albums realeased during Hendrix's life time:

Are You Experienced?
Axis:Bold as Love
Electric Ladyland

there were a few other albums realeased during his lifetime that were sub standard recordings from his time as a sideman for Curtis Knight and the Squires. these were sold as Hendrix albums but he was really just a backup musician on them. when he hit big with the Jimi Hendrix Experience a small label released these albums. there was a lawsuit but they still came out because Hendrix failed to mention to his new label that he waqs still under contract as a sideman to another.

the live album "Band of Gypsy's" was another release made to satisfy a lawsuit.

any other Hendrix release was made posthumously. "Midlight Lightning", "Cry of Love" and SEVERAL others. while there is some excellent Hendrix material on these albums they were basically cobbled together from unfinished songs or new ideas Hendrix had not yet fleshed out. the studio re-mixed what they could and brought in session musicians to record missing bass or drum tracks. Mitch Mitchell, Jimi's drummer with the Experience did a lot of it. but as Hendrix was no longer for final mixing what you hear is really just a guess at what Hendrix's vision of the song may have been. Had he lived some may have never been released.

In my opinion GWAR hasn't ever sucked.
