Title: June Community Playthrough-16 bit Disney
Post by: wildbil52 on May 15, 2013, 12:43:20 PM
So many people had fun playing through Arkham Asylum in the first RFGen community playthrough that a few of us thought we might try to make this a monthly event.

Since Crabby is a very busy Crab right now, Fleach and myself will be doing our best to get the next one organized.

We thought that it would be cool to alternate between current gen and retro titles so for the month of June, the RFGen Community will be playing through one of three 16 bit Disney games.

The achievements are OPTIONAL, all you have to do to participate it play any of these games.

Aladdin
A-1 Complete every Abu bonus level
A-2 Collect all 70 Red Gems and unlock the secret ending
A-3 Complete the game in 45 minutes

The Jungle Book

Achievment ideas, anyone?

The Lion King
L-1 Complete the Stampede level without taking any damage
L-2 Complete the game in under 30 minutes
L-3 Dress up as a character from The Lion King while you play (pic required)

Goof Troop
G-1 Complete the game with a friend
G-2 Complete the game without using a continue
G-3 Defeat 5 enemies with the grappling hook

We wanted to choose a list of games that are fairly common and inexpensive as well as give anyone who doesn't own them ample time to acquire them.

In case you haven't played them, Aladdin and The Lion King are platformers and Goof Troop is an adventure game in a top down Zelda style.

I'd also like to get a head count this time around so just respond to the thread if you plan on joining in.  Some users have more free time than others which is why you can play one, two, or all three of the games if you would like to participate.

5/29 UPDATE

June is almost here!  Play one game, play 2, play as many as you can!  The list of participants will be updated with achievements as they are completed.  Just make a post telling what you have done and I'll update this post (honor system, everyone!).

These are ALL fairly quick games, FYI. :P
I'd be more than happy to toss in, though I'll likely add in conditions for myself like collecting all jewels in Aladdin.

They are rather short, that's why we listed several.  The list of games we are working on for July will be more time consuming...

Goof Troop's the only one I don't have memorized. I played Aladdin and Lion King to death as a kid.
I'd love to do Magical Quest, but it's not dirt cheap.

Don't even know if I have one, but I'm sure I can find extras if I hunt around for a day.

Lion King and Aladdin are different games on Genesis, just as an FYI.

^ The Lion King is the same on the Genesis and Super Nintendo other than some minor sound and graphical differences. Both were made by Virgin Interactive, I do own the game on both platforms. You are right on Aladdin.

Quote
Mega Drive - I feel that this version is the most fast and responsive out of the three versions, it has all the important elements intact, and also has the best judged difficulty curve (though its still often considered hard), its easier than the SNES version, but still retains all the levels and bonus stages (unlike the Amiga version).

SNES - For the most part this and the Mega Drive version play fairly similar to each other, but a few differences here and there cause this to be most certainly the hardest version of the game. My reasons for saying this are spread thinly across many different areas so I'll try to list some of the more noticeable ones.

The vultures here are much more aggressive and persistent, in the Mega Drive port when you get to a certain point the vultures will break off the attack and leave you alone whereas here they seem to follow you to the ends of the earth, and will end up in large groups if you do not make sure to kill them.

Simba doesn't seem to jump quite as high here, making some of the easier routes seemingly impossible to take (for instance at the hippo section of the second level you are forced to take the harder swinging route across their tails, whereas in the Mega Drive port you could jump up and climb onto the second level hippo immediately).

The final boss fight is also much harder as it requires quicker reactions due to the panting time being much shorter. Some other elements adding to the difficulty are differences to the swinging and grabbing mechanics (the Mega Drive version uses a much more automated system where you can pretty much just tap the jump button and Simba makes his way up on his own) and the bonus levels tend to be more difficult and seem to give out fewer continues.

The vultures and jumping height make a big difference.  ;) You can skip entire sections of stages on the Genesis due to the jump height.
Content-wise, they're the same.

Aladdin is a completely different game on the Genesis, though.

I'll need to hit up eBay this evening because none of the flea markets or thrifts near me have SNES games (my area is oversaturated with sports games).

But I'm in! Can't wait.

Also, if anyone is looking I happen to have a nice loose SNES Aladdin in my sale thread...

Several people have brought up concerns with the short length of the June games.  Fleach and I are thinking of adding a short list of goals or achievements for each game.  If you are familiar with the games and have suggestions for goals/achievements, shoot me a PM.

Lion King:
There are multiple kinds of bugs - bonus bugs, health bugs, power-down bugs. Collect all bonus bugs, collect all bugs?
Pass a certain milestone in Bug Toss (e.g. 20+ bugs in Bug Toss nets you special dialog from Pumbaa). Fully complete the Bug Hunt mini-games without collecting a black widow.
Complete the game in under 30:00.
No damage/deaths on Simba's Exile.
No damage on Stampede.
Complete the falls ascend section of Hakuna Matata in a certain time.

Aladdin (SNES):
Collect all 70 Red Gems and unlock the secret ending.

for lion king does it have a way to track how many bugs you collect? i haven't played it before, but if they're not tracked then those unfamiliar with it won't know if they've finished or not.

No, there's no tracking system of any kind. You'd have to enumerate them yourself.

Title: Re: June Community Playthrough-16 bit Disney

actually another maybe better option would be to just add a 4th game. there are 4 full weeks in june, 1 game per week would work nicely if they're all short.

edit: what about The Jungle Book?

I prefer to play Lion King since I have never played it for more than 10 mins.

Aladdin is a great game for SNES and Genesis. I'll definitely play those. I've never played Lion King. I hated Goof Troop the cartoon with a passion so I might be hard headed and not try it.

Side note - my all-time favorite Disney games are; Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse (GEN) and Rescue Rangers (NES)

Goof Troop complete and without using a continue. Was also able to defeat 5 enemies with the grappling hook. :)

Really enjoyed this one.  Great problem solving events and only minimal backtracking.  The boss battles were fun, but not really difficult. The game was a bit too short and there wasn't a large variety of enemies, but otherwise, a great title.  Unfortunately, I will probably not be able to game with a friend, but I could see how that would be lots of fun.  I did complete the game without a continue.  Fruits are easy to farm by repeating screens and can get you up to about 9 lives before they stop reseting.  Farming lives is a great way to finish without using a continue, but watch out for the disappearing floor room on the last level (the ship).

As far as goals are concerned, it seems that there are only one or two blue/white gems on each level.  If we could get a total number this would also be a good objective.

Wow!  I found this very interesting for those of you who might not have known:

"This video game would become the first to have actually been designed by Shinji Mikami; who would later be known as the father of the survival horror video game genre. He would go on to develop the Resident Evil series later in his career. Many of the "survival" elements that would appear in Mikami's later games would first appear in this non-horror video game." (Wikipedia)

Well, I tried Goof Troop (which I never in a million years would've tried if not for this site) and I really like it! I haven't had too much time to play it, but I beat the first stage :)

Also, I think I defeated 5 enemies with the grappling hook. I knocked a few pirates into the water and popped a few porcupines.

Yeah, it was a neat game.  Had some more time last night and plugged through to the 5th stage in Aladdin. With such limited time, my plan is to complete the games and then go back and try the achievements if I have time.  Good luck to all.

Played Goof Troop with a friend and we had a great time. The game is loads of fun and you can definitely notice the Zelda elements. The puzzles are my favourite parts.

We got to Stage 4, unfortunately the skeleton boss gave us a hard time and we needed a couple continues. We should be wrapping this game up by middle of next week.

Completed Aladdin (SNES) tonight, no achievements.  I really liked the mechanics and flow of this game. The precison and timing of jumps is challenging and fun. Would have preferred a few more boss fights, but oh well.... I'm sure I will go back and try to complete the gem achievement.

Started Lion King and I can already tell it is going to be a bear.  The jumps feel much lazier and less crisp than most games. Maybe I just have a problem with quadrapeds.

In Simba's defense,  lions do spend most of the day sleeping. You're comment about lazy controls is zoologically justified.

Some of the platforms in Aladdin are a pain in the butt, especially in the Sultan's dungeon.  You have to be very precise, and i can't tell you how many times I've landed in the very center of a platform only to see Aladdin plummit to the ground.  Now i remember why i used to pull my games out of the system and throw them against the wall.

I'm stuck on Goof Troop, but not on a puzzle. I'm in the pirate ship, I have a silver key and a grappling hook, but I don't know where to go. I feel like I've explored every room, killed every enemy, checked for cracks in the wall, but I'm not seeing a silver padlock or a place to use my hook. I'll try again tonight. I WILL NOT BE STUMPED BY A DISNEY GAME! (don't help me, I'll figure it out) :)

In other news, Aladdin on Genesis is coming along nicely. However, there are tons of secrets I'm missing...
This game is so Earthworm Jim.
Extra lives and gems just out of reach, I've only played 1 Abu stage, etc. Very Earthworm Jim, along with the vast stages of going up, down, left and right and tons of ammo/apples to collect. I wonder how to say "groovy" in Arabic...

Keep at it Dezorian. You'll figure it out soon enough.

Played through Aladdin on the Genesis yesterday. Its probably been about 4 years or so since I popped it in. Was significantly easier than I remembered too. Didn't loose a life until the escape from the Cave of Wonders and beat it without having to resort to any continues. I wasn't aware there was a secret ending for getting all the red gems though so I might have to give that a try. Does that include the gems you can win in the slot machine between levels? Also how many Abu stages are there? I think I played and beat 2 of them. One very early (and freaking long, they make you dodge barrels forever) and one in the cave of wonders. I'm pretty sure I beat the game in less than 45 minutes though so I got one of three achievements so far!!

I beat the carpet ride without losing a single life.  The damn boulder stage before that kept owning me. I can't beat the Abu stages either, I'm always in the wrong place at the wrong time

A little late to the party but I just beat Goof Troop with a friend (who had never beaten an SNES game). We had loads of fun.

I'll start Lion King on Tuesday. Kind of disappointed that I couldn't track down a copy of Aladdin in time, it sounds pretty good.

Congrats on beating Goof Troop! The last level is a pain. It took me 45 minutes to complete.

It took use a little over an hour because there were moments when we stocked up on health. I really loved the puzzles in the last level. Very fun game.

I've gotten further in the last level in Goof Troop but now I'm stuck again (ship wheel puzzle). I'm thinking the game is twice as easy with a friend if you can use your partner as a block stopper.

Aladdin (Genesis) is giving me way more problems than I anticipated. The boulder level gave me fits. I cruise through the carpet ride however. I made it into the Genie's Lamp with only a few lives but rushed a few jumps. I'll get it next time...

In Goof Troop you can't use the second player to stop blocks. It'd be nice, but then the puzzles wouldn't be so puzzling. The blocks move in set paths and only turn at right angles. The longest way is the fastest and you have two star tiles and four blocks, so two of them are used to guide the other two. Those are my hints.

As for Aladdin... The Genesis one is supposedly the harder version. Don't lose hope, you'll get it.

I completed Aladdin on Genesis yesterday. It was difficult, but with practice, it becomes pretty easy. I beat it with only one continue. One strange thing that happened, I hit the last rock on the carpet ride, it went to the KO sequence, but I also completed the level. Not sure if this happens all the time.

I had a lot of fun playing it. Good level design, nice variety with gameplay, atmosphere (the genie level was imaginative), lots of replay value with the Abu stages and gem collection. I don't mind the lack of bosses because the levels were so rich. The Jafar battle was pretty unique.

I MIGHT have found a little secret...
During the bonus "slot machine" round, I've found that when you hit on an item, the next slot will be Jafar and the slot after that will be the same item you landed on the first time.

i.e. - On the first stage bonus round, I hit a gem, then skipped a slot (Jafar), and hit another gem. I did this at least 7 times in a row. I did this on every level - getting apples, lives, and gems - and it worked for the entire game except for once near the end. So it's not a flawless secret, but it worked a lot better than trying to time it by eye and landing on Jafar half the time.

I haven't given Goof Troop another look yet, but I still have 9 days.

Turns out I have a Model 1 Genesis AC adapter and a Model 2 RF cable. I have both models but each is missing something vital to be played. There's only one week left in June so I doubt I'll be able to play through The Lion King.

Man, this sucks!

i'm really behind on this, but i finally got around to starting The Lion King on Genesis. i've been playing a lot of modern games recently, i almost forgot how brutal old games could be in difficulty.

The oldies are toughies, but they're very rewarding. You feel very smart and capable when you solve a puzzle or defeat a big boss.

The Lion King shouldn't give you too much trouble. If anything, learn the patterns of the enemies and you'll be fine.

ya with each death i get a bit farther, but it just throws so much at you so soon. i had the most trouble with the rhino tails in level 2, the timing was really tricky on those.

Finally beat Goof Troop. Ultimately, I just keep messing around on the final puzzle until the pattern caught my eye. Pretty good game. Makes me wanna play Lolo.
