To be honest, I'm itching to get at this one. I love chatting with Jason about various topics, and his GameRaveTV episodes have been very entertaining and informative to watch. If you guys haven't seen his video series yet, check out his YouTube channel:

http://www.youtube.com/user/GameRaveTV/videos

Jason's a great friend of the site, and has graciously allowed us in the past to utilize his extensive database to get ours up to par.
...incidentally, blame him for my interest in variant collecting.

Also worth noting, he's searching for the following items for his collection. If any of you have these and would be willing to sell them, please contact him:

PSX WANTED LIST!
Full Games
Area 51 with LightBlaster Set
Hasbro 2-in-1 Frogger Blister
Rayman 2 Beach Ball Bundle

Demos
NBA 2 Ball "White Sleeve"
Pizza Hut "Wide Sleeve" Disc
PlayStation Ford Brand Demo
TRU Summer Kiosk Sleeve

Trade Demos
Akuji the Heartless
Dead or Alive
Nuclear Strike

Other / Unknown (?)
3xtreme Demo (Color Sleeve?)
Final Fantasy Anthology CDN
Resident Evil Long Box (Flat)

Crabby didn't get into Walking Dead because he doesn't like any game not on a Nintendo system. Walking Dead, Bioshock 1 & 2, Borderlands...... insert any non-Nintendo game here.

Crabby really likes a lot of PS2 RPGs, so he's not a complete Nintendo snob. I like it that he plays things that are a lot different than what I usually do. It leads me into new territory.

I'll be the first to admit I have a soft spot for Nintendo System, but not necessarily games. I've been pretty vocal about my taste in many of the big Nintendo franchises such as Metroid, Zelda, and Animal Crossing on the podcast in the past. And I definitely wouldn't be putting much time into most Mario, Yoshi and Kirby games if I didn't have a 5 year old who wants to play them with me.

There are many games on Nintendo systems that I love, but they (surprisingly) typically aren't published by Nintendo. And that is true for pretty much any of their systems (Wii U being the exception at the moment). Their hardware is typically the most reliable and I am a BIG fan of their controllers, Wii included. Their games are mostly mediocre though with a few exceptions.

Here are some of my favorite games that came out this last gen Tynstar to give you some perspective into my likes/dislikes:

3D Dot Game Heroes
Catherine
Brutal Legend
Blue Dragon
Lost Odyssey
Enslaved
Heavy Rain
Sam & Max Seasons 1 & 2
Muramasa The Demon Blade
Fire Emblem
Super Smash Bros Brawl
Sin & Punishment
King of Fighters XIII
Mirror's Edge
Silent Hill Shattered Memories
A Boy and His Blob
Deathsmiles
Lollipop Chainsaw
Persona 4 Arena
Valkyria Chronicles
Guilty Gear XX
Castle of Shikigami III
Batman Arkham Asylum
Pikmin New Play Control

4 Nintendo Published titles doesn't seem like a lot and they definitely aren't the typical franchises you'd expect other than Smash Bros. There is also a distinct lack of shooters in there which is probably a huge reason why I don't enjoy games like Bioshock or Borderlands. I'm not their target audience. Walking Dead I honestly thought I would love from what I heard. It may be a case of me buying into the hype and having completely different expectations of the game than what was delivered to me. In particular I kept hearing about the voice acting and story were incredible and pushed the boundaries of video game story telling. In the first episode I played I round the game to be VERY video game-ish and not at all what I was expecting based on what I heard.

Basically I'm trying to say that I tend to favor Nintendo hardware, but not necessarily their games. I did however find that in the Wii generation that system had far and away more games on it that appealed to my gaming tastes than both other systems did combined. I like many of the goofy and quirky games that got a retail release on the Wii and were either passed over on the other systems or were downloadable only.

As I mentioned in the show, I think if you go farther with the Walking Dead, you'll enjoy it. Episode 1 is pretty tame, but it's job is just to really introduce the characters to you. The plot gets deep the farther in you go.

I get the impression that Crabs is a bit finicky, games-wise. Thing is, when he talks about games he doesn't much care for, he does it in a tone of understated disappointment, rather than in a rabid, apoplectic rage... which I kinda dig, actually. Sadly, I'm probably the only one who digs it. I seriously doubt people are gonna flock to the next big gaming convention to see "The Mildly Disappointed, Only Slightly Peeved Video Game Nerd."

Title: Re: RF Generation Collectorcast Episode 16
Post by: Zagnorch on July 27, 2013, 07:59:57 PM
All right, here are my fave bits from the first hour:

8:27- “So you’re condoning  the use of emulators?” I think the main difference here is that the producers of the Gottlieb Pinball Hall of Fame collection is licensed by Gottlieb itself, making it legal and above-board, while emulators-- hey wait, am I giving a serious answer to Bil’s question? Sorry, had a lapse there. It'll never happen again, I promise.

16:03- “Do you really think (RetroRage) is an angry guy?” Only when I goof on his beloved Seattle Seahawks. God, I can’t wait for the NFL season to start…

36:19- “I smother (my copy of Metroid Other M in shrink-wrap. I don’t let evil out.” HEY NOW!

41:00-42:10-  The poor kid was having trouble seeing the action on his GBC, and I didn't want him going blind from eye-strain trying to make things out on a non-backlit screen. Blindness pretty much takes the “video” part right outta “video games,” after all.

58:03-59:03- The so-called “Mini SNES” is discussed. Looks like at least one denizen of the Great White North is in on the conspiracy. And I was really startin’ to like that guy, too…

59:11- “What is the deal with Minecraft? ANYbody??? I don’t get it!” Maybe Conan O’Brien’s Clueless Gamer segment on Minecraft will enlighten you:..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwJnk6QRZ8Q
So it's like living in Wales in the 19th century, and we're desperately poor.

…but more than likely not.

Minecraft is almost like Legos.
The younger or more creative you are the more likely you are to be able to dump hours into it and make something cool.

That being said i got my GS in it and moved on. I can see the appeal to it but if you really like it you should be playing the PC version.

Listened to the first 2 hours yesterday while weeding the garden, listened to 1.5 hours on the drive to work, and listened to an hour or so at work, and I still have an hour to go. It feels like a never-ending episode, and I love it.

Also, I'm glad to know those C64's I picked up were later releases, I know nothing about these old computers, so that's actually quite a useful bit of info.

Great show - really enjoyed Jason's passion for the 32-bit era. I was a big PlayStation guy also (had a modded one in college so...free time...yeah) and only in the last couple of years have I gone back and started collecting (had about 600 CDRs if not more throughout those original years).

Mod chips where a huge thing back then, and I still have a modded PlayStation and Saturn. I used them mostly for importing, but burning discs was easy back then. Glad you enjoyed the show.

I remember sending some guy in Arizona a check for $15 and a month later getting a mod chip in a plain white envelope with printed out soldering instructions. AND IT WORKED.

Having a fast college internet collection made it way too easy but in the end, was just a waste of unplayed discs and I spent the most time with real copies of FF7 and SOTN (in addition to your Sony-branded 989 sports titles).

I remember the first burned disc I ever put into my modded PlayStation was the Japanese demo of Metal Gear Solid, before it had come here. I was completely amazed, and I played it over and over.

I recently picked up a large lot of games and accessories, and was surprised to find a huge stack of burned PlayStation and Dreamcast games in it. I don't really have use for them, so I'll have to hunt around and see if anyone even still wants them.

When we were getting ready for our baby in July, I finally had to make the call and I threw out a gigantic box of PS1 and Dreamcast CDRs (in albums and with DC: printed out art and cases). I just didn't have the room in the office and putting them in the attic would just melt them worse than years of being in a CD holder already did (I'd imagine most were toast as the top of the CD would just peel off after being in sleeves like that). Not going to lie, after lugging those around for 15+ years, I was a little wistful.

I always had this plan that they were for "a rainy day" and all those hundreds of hours of free gaming time never materialized. On the DC side I have already collected the real version of (almost) everything I wanted and with PS1 I'll be doing the same.
