Title: December Retro Community Playthrough - Streets of Rage 1, 2 & 3
Post by: singlebanana on November 26, 2013, 09:33:32 AM
This month we will be playing one of the finest beat 'em ups ever created, the Streets of Rage series (1-3). All of these titles can be found on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive with limited releases on XBox Live Arcade, Nintendo Virtual Console/Wii Ware, Sega Game Gear, the Sony Playstation Network, Dreamcast, the Sonic's Gems Collection (Japanese release only) for PS2 and GameCube, and on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for the PS3 and 360. Please play all titles on normal difficulty and use stock lives (the number of lives provided by the game, no option changes).  Please let me know if you will be participating this month and go ahead and track down these titles.   :ninja:

**Achievements subject to change or be added to prior to December 1st. If you have any suggestions for achievements, please PM singlebanana. Photos of high scores, game end screens, and fun pics of you playing with a friend are highly encouraged**

ACHIEVEMENTS:

Week 1 (12/1 -12/7) - Streets of Rage 1 - person with highest score gets 10 achievement points, others get points in decending order (for example: 2nd place = 9 points, 3rd place = 8 points and so on). No one will get less than 5 achievement points for participating. Scores can be submitted until midnight server time (CST) on 12/7.

Week 2 (12/8 - 12/14) - Streets of Rage 2 - same points system in place. Scores can be submitted until midnight server time (CST) on 12/14.

Week 3 (12/15 -12/21) - Streets of Rage 3 - same points system in place. Scores can be submitted until midnight server time (CST) on 12/21.

Weeks 4 & 5 (12/22 - 12/31) - BATTLE ROYALE - You can continue to submit scores for all games. The player with the highest total score for all 3 games combined is the Battle Royale Champion. Similar points system applies; Battle Royal Champion receives 15 points, second place 12 points, third place 10 points, and remaining places -1 (i.e. 4th place = 9 points, 5th place = 8 points, etc.), with no less than 5 points awarded to each participant. Scores can be submitted until midnight server time (CST) on 12/31.

NOTE: NO SCORES WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR GAMES PLAYED OUT OF TURN UNTIL THE BATTLE ROYALE BEGINS ON 12/22 (WEEKS 4 & 5). YOU CAN ONLY SUBMIT STREETS OF RAGE 1 SCORES DURING WEEK 1, STREETS OF RAGE 2 SCORES DURING WEEK 2, AND STREETS OF RAGE 3 SCORES DURING WEEK 3. SCORES ACCUMULATED DURING WEEKS 1-3 WILL BE USED TOWARD YOUR BATTLE ROYALE POINTS TOTAL, BUT OF COURSE, YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO IMPROVE YOUR SCORES.

PLEASE ABIDE BY THE HONOR SYSTEM WHEN POSTING SCORES AND ACHIEVEMENTS. ALSO, DO NOT USE SAVE POINTS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE IF YOU ARE PLAYING ONE OF THE MODERN CONSOLE VERSIONS. COMPETITION HERE IS ENJOYABLE AND WE HAVE A VERY TRUSTWORTHY COMMUNITY, SO LET'S KEEP IT THAT WAY. THANKS.

Additional Achievement Points Awarded throughout the month:

- +5 points per game for completion,
- additional +5 points per game for completing without using a continue
- and an addtional +5 points for finishing each game with a partner
- unlock "Roo" in Streets of Rage 3 and finish the game with him: +5 points

The overall points champion for the month shall be crowned the RFGEN KING OF RAGE

High scores for each game can only be posted for an individual playthrough. You cannot post a multiplayer score, but you can earn +5 achievement points per game by beating a game with a friend at anytime during the month.

IT'S STREETS OF RAGE B@&%HES! The goal for the week of December 1st will be posted on Sunday. We will be playing a game each week starting with the original Street of Rage, so be sure to pick up your copy.

Count me in!

I have a friend who loves the SoR series (at least the first two, he dislikes the third for some reason), so I'm sure I can get him to co-op it with me.

Awesome! SoR is a game best played with a friend. Ironically, my wife (the non-gamer) even enjoys playing and will probably be my partner for some of it.

FYI, all three are on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection if you have a PS3 or 360. It is pretty cheap as well.

I don't think they are in the US version, but someone double-check to be sure.

You are correct. The Streets of Rage titles are in the Japanese version only. I will make this correction.

@Fleach: Before September 1st, I never knew Crabmaster. If it wasn't for his brilliant store, I wouldn't have gained a friend, and acquired the already impressive collection I now have. Long live Game Quest!

@Crabmaster: I'm hoping my gaming skills outshine my collector skills, for our co-op. Bottom-line: beat-em-up and have fun.

It's a little hard to tell, but my high score today was 118700.  You only get a few seconds to take a picture so I didn't have much of a chance to get it in focus.

I swear some of the enemies in this game are impossible to hit.   Like that Wolverine boss in level 2... you can't hit him without the special.

Yes, I will post scores in the original post. I will post scores for each week for each game and also during the Battle Royale. After the end of each week, I will talley points so that everyone can keep up with the overall standings.

Yes, continues can be used for the partner playthrough. No additional points will be awarded for completing the game with a parter and using no continues; this will only be for the individual run through.

Hope this clears things up. If not, please let me know. Great questions and thanks for participating NxCmp. :)

Another good question. No, score posts are unlimited, just remember to only post scores for the game of the week. Once we get the Battle Royale week and a half, score posts will be open for all three games. I will try and keep the scores updated often and as accurate as possible. If you have any issues with your posted score(s) or total points, please send me a PM and we will work it out. Thanks.

Not sure if this has been asked yet (since I've stayed away from the thread), but are you excluding the Genesis Collection on X360/PS3? It allows for in-game saves.
EDIT: Looks like it's included. Just wanted to mention since you can easily use the in-game saves to do a continue-less run. In fact, I did a deathless run for my achievements on x360 originally.

Dont see how this is an issue. Both versions of Ducktales were allowed this summer, even though Remastered saves progress.

We will keep it for the sake of having more platforms for people to join in the playthrough. I would hope that our members would abide by the honor system and not use the in-game saves. I know it's kind of competative and that's what makes it fun; however, if someone cheats, well they'll just have to be content with being dishonest. We have a great group of members here and I don't think that will be a problem. Glad you brought it up though Shadow.

Got much further without using a continue today.   I find that's it a lot easier to get through the levels without using the weapons.  It's too easy to get surrounded and the weapons are too slow.   I don't even think theyre that much more effective to begin with.

New high score: 228400

Also made it to the end of the 8th stage, the doors before the last boss. I can't figure out the pattern of those girls, but have the other bosses down now so future runs should be much better.

I just took a crack at this tonight, and came up just a bit short of beating the current high score.

I did make it to the final boss (although not on one continue), but died relatively early into the fight.

Looking forward to trying this again (hopefully) tomorrow!   :)

new record! took a good 5 or 6 tries, but considering i've never played this game before i'm off to a good first night. i've just been trying to improve each level as i go along to the point where i feel comfortable with it, so i've been restarting more than using the continues, haven't gotten past the first few screens of round 4 yet.

edit: what difficulty is everyone playing on? is there any difference in score between them?

Yeah, it should. I believe it is on the screen where you select the number of players. It will default to normal anyway, which is what we are usinig.

I'm late, but I'd like to still participate. I own SoR 2 on Xbox, and I own Sonic's Collection, but I've been looking for it since the summer and I still cannot find it.

At the very least, count me in for SoR 2.

I love both games, but just sayin..

It's weird, in the arcade section of level 3, two of those "Signals" are named Axi and Mavin.  They don't have any particular difference from the regular punks from what I can tell.  It's just odd.

It's all good, there's many examples of games copying other games. IMO, Final Fight copied Andre The Giant

My Genesis copy does not have a difficulty selection option, or at least to my knowledge.

Yeah, it should. I believe it is on the screen where you select the number of players. It will default to normal anyway, which is what we are usinig.

it should be in the options menu when you select the number of players

Set the bar a little higher this evening with Blaze: 461,700. If you don't mind, when you post your high scores, let me know what character you set it with. It will be kind of neat to see who you used.

I am still having trouble with those twin girls. Made it to the last door with lots of lives left, but those girls work me everytime.

The biggest challenge is figuring out the enemy patterns (especially the bosses) and not losing lives fighting the scrubs. I began using Axel, since I thought he was the most well-rounded of the 3 characters; however, I tried Blaze last night and had much better results. The reason for this I think is: 1. I know the game better now, and 2. She has better speed than the guys. I know that she and Axel have the same speed rating, but I feel that Blaze punches and moves much faster and has a good reach. I know that her power is lower than the guys, but I don't think the drop off is significant, especially if you are using the grapple combos effectively. I haven't tried to use Adam yet, but I assume he is slow due to being the "muscle." You'd think a boxer would be much quicker right?

Wait........why the hell am I giving you guys advice?

Techwizard sent me a PM discussing the playthrough and noted that some of you are taking your scores from the screen when you input your initials. You could be losing some valuable points by doing this, since you level bonus points may still be added to your final score. Please be sure to wait until after your endgame and take your final score from the high score screen that plays through on the attract mode.

Also, even if you don't overtake the high score, but beat your current high score, please post it. Your points from each week will be tallied for the Battle Royale starting in Week 4. You can improve your scores of course during that last week and a half, but it helps to have a solid start. Also note that high scores for each game can only be posted for an individual playthrough. You cannot post a multiplayer score, but you can earn 5 achievement points per game by beating a game with a friend at anytime during the month.

Blaze and Axel don't have the same speed rating.   I got twice as far with Blaze than I did Axel because of the speed improvement alone

EXHIBIT A

You can't argue fact, but I agree, she moves a little faster and definitely punches faster. I can move through the game quicker with her too.

the fact that they all have 3 stats but nothing below a B rating makes me wonder if one stat for each of them is really supposed to be a C instead of A, that would make more sense and explain the noticeable speed differences on the 2 with the same rating

I took another shot at this tonight.  Since everybody here seemed to prefer Blaze, I decided to use her for this playthrough (I used Axel the first time).  I made it all the way to the twin girls before the final boss before using my first continue, and had enough continues left over to finally beat the game!  Also set a new high score of 501,900

Thanks!  A while back, me and a friend tried over and over again to beat SoR 2 on the hardest difficulty with only one life and no continues, so I have a lot of 'training' when it comes to the SoR games.  :)

I'm not sure if this is common knowledge or not when it comes to these games, but when you are being thrown, if you hold up on the D-pad and tap the jump button (there's probably a precise timing, but I just tap the button), you will land on your feet and not take damage.  Good tip for fighting the Blaze clones.

I'm gonna try to get the rest of the 'achievements' for this week if I can.  I have a couple of friends who would co-op it with me, it's just a matter of getting them to come over before the week is up.  I'm not sure about beating the game without using a continue though.  I *might* be able to get past the final two Blaze clones and make it to the final boss on one continue, but the final boss is so cheap that I probably won't be able take him out before losing all my lives.  I'm gonna give it a shot though!  :)

I just want to note here that you can earn the "additional achievement points" at any time during the month. For instance, you can beat all three Streets of Rage titles alone or with a friend and earn these achievement points even if we are not playing that specific game for the week. What you cannot do (until the Battle Royale) is post scores for games that are not the weekly game. For example, you cannot post a score for SoR2 until next week, since we are playing the original until Dec. 7th. Conversely, after Dec. 7th, you cannot post additional scores for the original SoR until the Battle Royale week begins on the 22nd.

This means, if you have a friend over, go ahead and play all of the titles if you want and earn the achievement points. I don't want anyone to think that they have to invite a friend over every week. But it would be a lot cooler if you did! :)

I hope this is clear, but if not, please feel free to ask questions. Thanks.

Yep! we sure did! Not without continuing unfortunately. I never did watch the video on strategy for beating the twins and final boss. Crabmaster and I, are stirring up a bit of shock and surprise, by expressing our enjoyment of SoR over the fan favoured SoR2. Might have to try and see if he will be willing to do another night next week giving 2 another shake and also doing 3. Which apparently, most fans of the series, regard as the worst of the three.

Mike and I finally had a chance to sit down and play some co-op Streets of Rage 1 and 2 a couple nights ago. Our first attempt wasn't great, but we made it to the two twins at the end of the game on our second playthrough. We played SoR2 immediately after and I think we both missed the first one. The second one looks and feels so much different it almost feels like its from a different series. Plus the special moves are so much more lame than the first one. And neither of us had any idea why were were transitioning from a pirate ship to an alien world to a wrestling ring. And a few of the enemies were super annoying in number 2. Definitely more of a fan of 1 although it was really fun to play with Max in two since his throws were pretty fantastic.

I just finished updating the current standings. I am going to better organize the leaderboard tomorrow from work, since my home computer has this aggrevating scrolling issue when I type in the submission text box. PLEASE look over your scores and make sure that they are accurate. If there is a mistake, send me a PM. Thanks. Hope everyone is having as much fun with this playtrough as I am. :)

Definitely more of a fan of 1 although it was really fun to play with Max in two since his throws were pretty

You're crazy Crabs.  2 is the best game of the series.  The hit boxes are so bad in the first game and there were a bunch of times I got stuck in these weird glitchy hit loops.

Did SoR1 have special moves?

Stage 3 of SoR2 is an amusement park, that's why there are weird transitions from an arcade to a pirate ship to an alien fun house.  And the underground fight club in Stage 4?  Hey,  we're talking about a notorious crime syndicate here.  Of course they're gonna have a fight club in a well hidden place.   It makes more sense than a pro-wrestler randomly hanging out on a beach in SoR1.

Curious to play SoR2 as it's been a while. I really enjoyed SoR1 and I really don't understand the criticisms I've heard previously (not in this thread) about this game. SoR2 has a lot to live up to for me at this point.

I never had any hit box issues or glitches. What system did you play it on RetroRage? Just wondering if that might have been the reason.

So glad to be back to this game. Gave it a run through with Axel. Beat the game with no continues, score: 703,700

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried Streets of Rage Remake? http://soronline.net/sorr_info.htm

I just downloaded it and will try it later.

there's more moves than that.  Press forward forward attack and you'll do a special move that doesn't take any damage.  IMO the bazooka is too cheap

I've been playing both Streets of Rage 1 and 2 lately and these games are kicking my butt. I have only had about 45 minutes to put into each game though, so maybe with more time I can get the hang of the games.

One thing that gets me riled up is that hunchback dude who runs around with the knife. Ughhh....

Yeah, that guy is annoying. There's one spot in SoR1 where you have 3-4 of them running around at the same time that drives me bonkers.

Did anybody else have an awkward time transitioning from SoR 1 to SoR 2?  I didn't realize how slow the gameplay in 2 was compared to 1, so it took a little time for me to adjust.

Ha! Yeah, I was going to comment on this after the week was over, but since you mentioned it..... The gameplay in 2 is much slower than 1 and it noticed it as soon as I started playing. It's a shame, but I guess you give up the speed for making the game more aesthtically appealing, which SoR2 is.

I've only played it once this week, but planning on playing some the next few nights to up my score and hopefully finish it. From what I've seen, it's good to use the "slow punch" technique to hold up enemies and not take additional damage from knocking them down multiple times. I'm kinda with Crabby on this one so far. *yawn*

Pro Tips: in SoR2, there are 3 hidden 1ups that are behind objects. One is in stage 1, one in stage 2, and one in stage 3. Also, different attacks are with different point values. Mix it up to find the best way to maximize points.

I still enjoy the game quite a bit despite it being significantly slower than the first.  In fact, I think I enjoy them both pretty much equally.  Of course, Super Double Dragon is my favorite beat em up game, and the gameplay is relatively slow in that one, so it would make sense that 2's slower pace doesn't bother me.

Yeah, I used the "slow punch" technique quite a bit in both games.  It was actually more effective in the first game, but still works pretty well in 2 also.

The game play is a little slower, but the fighting is more fast paced.  More enemies on screen, better AI, larger variety of enemies....

I'm frankly surprised I'm in the minority here.

Here's my beef. You say that SoR2 "is a little slower" and that there are "more enemies on screen." I agree, and this is why I like the first game better. When the actions are slow, it's harder to take out an overy full room of enemies and therefore results in a lot of frustrating and cheap deaths. I think SoR2 is a great game, I just like the fluidity of the gameplay of the original much better. To each their own.

I think this makes SoR 2 more strategic than the first game.  You have more moves available to you in the second game, and I think a large part of mastering the game is learning which moves are best for different situations.  Just as an example, I usually hate using moves that take away a portion of the player's health (the special moves in SoR 2), but I've found that if you're surrounded by enemies, it's better to just go ahead and use the special move and lose that bit of health rather than take a beating from multiple enemies.  Some of the other moves in the game are also good for crowd control.

I will agree that overall I probably do prefer the feel and faster pace of SoR 1 over 2, but I also like that 2 feels more strategic, hence why I said I like them both pretty much equally.  :)

It's funny you say that, because I was experiencing many more cheap deaths in the first game.  I can't tell you how many times I was positioned near a weapon and i'd try to punch an enemy in SoR1 only to be stuck on that accidently-pick-up-the-weapon-get-hit-try-to-hit-back-but-picks-up-weapon-now-im-dead loop.  SoR2 just feels so much more polished to me and fixed many of those issues.

Faultiest logic ever. The weapon pickup/put down HAPPENS. IN. BOTH. GAMES! This has not been fixed in any way.

SoR2 is like a high school cheerleader, slow but pretty. :)

But seriously, I'm just having a little fun with you man. I like both games, I just prefer the first one more. It just feels better to me and was a more enjoyable play.

Not sure which Tim Curry role is more frightening: Dr. Frank N. Furter or It. That being said, I nervously anticipate SoR3 with Crabmaster next week. I haven't played it in a while, and I don't remember it being as bad as most SoR fans say it is.

It was absolutely fixed in the second game.

In SoR1 if you get punched one time you drop the weapon right where you stand.   If you try to retaliate by hitting back your character will instead try pick up the weapon and you'll continue to get beat down.  In SoR2 you don't drop the weapon until your character gets knocked down, so you get plenty of time to fight back without getting stuck in that annoying loop.

I just bought a copy of SoR 3 on ebay, so hopefully I'll get it within the next few days.

I just remembered that Fighting Force on the PS1 was originally intended to be Streets of Rage 4 and released on the Saturn, but Sega pulled the SoR license so they changed the name and released it on the PS1.  I'm not sure if this is a well known fact or not, but I thought it was an interesting bit of trivia.  :)

I see what you are saying RetroRage. I thought you meant that while you are in combat on top of a weapon, you wouldn't bend down and pick it up in SoR2. I misunderstood what you were describing. That is an improvement, but I rarely use weapons in either game, so it really never affected the way I played. Good point though.

Glad you are getting SoR3 Disposed so that you can join us. Great fact about SoR4, I'll have to find a copy at some point. If like to know how it is.

Thanks.  I won't be able to submit any scores for SoR 3 until my copy comes in later this week, so I'll have to sit out until then.  I was finally able to get a friend to come over this weekend, and we were able to finish SoR 1 co-op.  Hopefully I'll be able to co-op 2 and 3 also before the month is up.

After playing SoR 2, then revisiting SoR 1 again, I think I'll have to count myself among those that prefer the second game to the first.

I think most of us are hoping that your copy of SoR3 doesn't come in this week so that we can catch up. :P  Nicely done! I too will be curious about revisiting the first game again to see how it holds up during Battle Royale week and playing with a friend. I still need to finish SoR1 without a continue....

I did a full update to the standings this morning, so everything should be correct, if not let me know.

Also, if anyone comes across a CIB copy (or better yet, just IB) of SoR1 [not the blue classic version] please let me know. I own the other two CIB and would like to have a nice set. Thanks.

alright so I've given SoR3 a couple of runs this week, and I've yet to get a score worth posting.

I only played this game a handful of times when I was a kid and have since forgotten everything about it, so it's basically a brand new game to me again.

What I can say about it so far is.....damn it's difficult.  The AI has definitely been turned up a notch.

It's also not very pretty.  Some of the stages look cool and I'm starting to warm up to it a little bit, but the sharpness of the characters has definitely taken a step back.

And the music. is. terrible.  I loved the clean sound of the jazz from the first two games.  That techno shit so far in the first 3 levels of the game is awful.

The sounds of the voices and screams is equally as bad.  Every male punk has that same groggy "YAAAAGGGHHHH!!!!"  At least in SoR1 and 2 they mixed it up a little bit and they didn't sound nearly as raspy.

I may be splitting hairs a little bit, but those little details matter to me.

Well, I wasn't expecting my copy of SoR 3 to come in until Thursday, but as luck would have it, it came in yesterday.  I made three attempts at playing through this game, but like RetroRage said, this game is really difficult.  I've played SoR 2 so many times over the past few years that I was able to breeze through that game on one continue with no problem.  I haven't really played SoR 3 very much at all, so I'm not very familiar with strategies, enemy patterns, etc.  That being said, I am getting better at it with each playthrough, so hopefully I'll be able to finish it before long.

I went ahead and snapped a pic of my current personal high score.  It's nothing to write home about, and doesn't even beat the current community high score, but at least I'm on the board now.

I agree with a lot of this. First of all, the AI was really turned up in this game. What I find most notably frustrating is that some of the characters can block. This makes it rather difficult to take down and move to other enemies when there are a lot of them on the screen. The scenery does appear to have taken a step back in several places, but I think that the sprites might be a little more detailed in SoR3 than in SoR2 (just my opinion). The music is much worse as RetroRage pointed out and is especially annoying in the dance club. Sheeeesh!

As noted by others, this is a very difficult game and I think that might be a lot of the reason that people dislike it. As tough as it is, I think the game definitely has its pros, so I'll play devil's advocate here and point out things I like:

1. I like that there is a storyline to follow after each level of the game. The previous games had a story, but it was scripted at the beginning and end with nothing in between. I do think this is a nice touch.

2. Ability to unlock characters. Seems that there are two characters in the game that you can unlock and play as. I think this is a pretty neat idea and I applaud the thought behind this.

3. I really love the vertical rolls. By tapping up or down twice, your character rolls out of the way. I've not mastered this technique, but I think it's crucial to doing well in the game. It can get you out of a pinch or help you dodge things coming at you rapidly (train cars) and it is much faster than walking up and down.

4.  The power bar. I know some of you may disagree, but I think the timed power bar is a nice implementation. Being able to use special moves without taking a life penalty (if the bar is full) seems to be something that was well thought out. There is also a sliding scale of how much damage you take in using the special move depending on how full the bar is; the less full, the more damage of course.

My thought is this. It's a tough game, but I think the better you get at it, the more you'll like it. Be sure to post any scores, since that will at least get you on the board. Thanks for playing guys.

A friend of mine was telling me that the NA release of SoR 3 was much more difficult than the Japanese version, which, according to Wikipedia, appears to be true:

Quote from: Wikipedia
The game's overall difficulty was also altered for the English version, with the game's Normal setting being significantly more difficult than even the Japanese version's Hard setting. Also, the English version of the game cannot be completed on the Easy setting (it will end after Stage 5).

It's like Boo!

I know I'm late, but my SoR2 score is 628,730 and I died right before the final boss. I'm having trouble getting pictures from my phone to the computer but Banana has proof. Also, I thought we weren't supposed to use continues so when it's Battle Royale time, I'll definitely beat it and improve my score.

As for the game, I underestimated SoR2. Trying for a high score greatly improves the strategy and game play. I had a lot of fun playing it.

Some positives that may fly under the radar

- I loved the "Alien" stage and the mini-boss (Orpheus?). Very creative and unique for a game like SoR to add something like that in. The baseball stadium was cool too.
- While I don't think the music is amazing, it's production deserves a 10/10. It's elaborate and every note from every instrument is clear and smooth.

I only have a few minor complaints - because no game is perfect.

- Needs more of a variety in items. There are 9; Apple, Chicken, Cash Bag, Gold Bars, Knife, Katana, Kunai, Grenade, and Lead Pipe. Compare that to Final Fight which came out 3 years earlier. It has 39 different items.
- It's a little dark. I guess they're going for that techno/neon light/street urchin feel, but I could've used a little bit of daylight aside from through the windows on the final stage and the dawn light at the beach. Maybe they're expressing that the fighting starts at 10pm, goes throughout the night, and the final level is at 8am? It's a stretch given the lack of flesh in the story, but I guess it's possible.

Sometimes the little details are what separates a good game from a great game.

Yes, Dezorian contacted me while the site was having issues to let me know he was having trouble posting his score. I will update the standings from last week and make the necessary adjustments. This will not effect everyone that much and I think basically gives Crabmaster 5 points for the week instead of 6.

Thanks for joining us Dezorian.

Wow, that's extremely nice of you, but it's okay. If it was November 23rd I'd say Yes, but by the time it comes in the mail it'll be almost too late.................

Oh I see what's going on......you wanna distract me with another game so I don't beat your SoR2 high score in the Battle Royale  ;)

Oh yeah, I forgot that the holidays are coming up, so the mail will probably be significantly slower next week.

Heh, I actually wouldn't mind having a reason to go back and play SoR 2 some more.  Bring it on!   :evilhappy:

I keep getting better at SoR 3 every time I play, so I'm confident I'll be able to at least beat the game before long, although I may not be able to do it without using a continue.  I thought I'd share some tips I've come across for those who may not know about them:

1.  There is a 1up and 5000 points (gold bar?)  hidden behind some foreground scenery at the start of the first level.  There's also a 1up hidden behind the foreground near the start of the third level.
2.  There's a hidden passage you can take near the start of one of the levels, I think level 5.  You have to fight a lot of those ninja guys in there, but you can also find a 1up and quite a few gold bars, so I thought it was worth it.  Lookup a walkthrough to see specifically where it is.
3.  You get stars under your life bar for every 40,000 points you accumulate without dying (you lose the star if you die).  Each star powers up your dash attack (double tap left or right then press punch).
4.  Some of the weapons have special dash attacks.  The knife does some 'shoryuken' style uppercut, while the sword does a pretty effective charge attack.  There may be others, but those are the only two I've found.  I also believe that the special weapon attacks are character specific (the ones I mentioned were done using Blaze).
5.  I personally think that jump kicks are more effective in this game than in SoR 2 since you can always steer yourself while in the air.  Very effective for knocking enemies off ledges/into pits.

I'll post some more if I think of/discover anything else.  Good luck guys!

Nice score, and thanks for the great tips! I found the hidden pickups at the beginning, but not the 1up on the 3rd level. This game is really challenging and I imagine that the bosses probably appear again toward the end of the game like they do in the previous titles. Any particular strategy you use for Mona and Lisa? I did better on them the third time I played through by kind of taking my time, avoiding their attacks, letting my power regenerate, and picking my spots to kind of single them out. Not sure if there is a better strategy though. Those mining carts are pretty brutal on level 4 and really sapped my energy. When you hear the sound that indicates they are coming, you have to at least get to the center of the screen.

Yeah, Mona and Lisa are by far the hardest bosses I've encountered in the game so far.  I don't have a great strategy for beating them.  I just try to hit them as they are landing, which many times results in me getting kicked.  I also always use a special attack when one lifts the other into the air and is coming in for the jump kick.

I didn't have a problem at all with the mine carts.  The track that the cart is coming on will vibrate first, so it's pretty easy to know where not to stand as long as you pay attention.

Ah, never paid enough attention to notice that the track vibrates. Good call!

I wait for one of them to flip over me and attack as soon  as they land behind me.  You have to wait for them to come to you, you can't really bring the fight to them.

I plan on getting a good 3 or 4 runs in tonight. I'll have a score posted for sure

Wife's family coming in town for the weekend. I'm really going to have to stay up late and cut back on the "holiday cheer" to get in any run this weekend.

High score: 63020

Pathetic i know.   This game is kicking my ass and with all the Christmas crap going on its hard to squeeze a good session in.

I'm not surprised nobody beat SoR 3 by the end of this week.

But I'm sold on the game now.  It's not as bad as I first thought it was.  I wish the music was better, but I'm willing to look past the other minor gripes I had with the game.

I guess I felt the same way about SoR3 than I did about FF8.  FF7 was so good that I was comparing everything about 8 to 7 and I never gave it a chance.  But now in hindsight 8 isn't a bad game at all.  It's hard to break down those biases.

I think SoR3 is a pretty good game as well. I think the difficulty is the major reason people don't care for it.

Congrats to Disposed Hero for winning yet another week of SoR! Dude, give the rest of us a chance.

As you know, the remaining month is the Battle Royale. Improve your scores in any or all three of the games and earn points based on highest point total. Remember, there are still points to be earned by finishing games, finishing with no continues, and finishing with a partner. Good luck!

Just wanted to jump in and mention this to you folks:
I was looking in the ESRB database for some rating descriptors for an old PC title and saw that 3D Streets of Rage for 3DS was just rated. Turns it out it released last week in the eShop!

I haven't had a chance to play any SoR the last few days due to the holidays and such, but I finally sat down with SoR 3 again today.  I made it all the way to the Stage 6 boss before using my first continue, and then proceeded to burn through the rest of my lives and continues on the last level.  Here's hoping I can finally beat it on my next playthrough.

Raised the bar a bit for SoR 3:

A couple more attempts and I finally beat SoR 3.  Not surprisingly, I wasn't able to do it without using a continue, but I'm ok with that.

And with that, I am officially done with Streets of Rage for a while.  I had a lot of fun with this one, guys.  Good luck to the rest of you who are still playing!
