I'm in, but my gaming time has been more limited as of late, so there's a good chance I'll fall behind and not be able to finish by the end of the month.

Yeah, I don't believe that for a second. :)

I found this smoking hot fox in the corner of every page of the guide! She's very distracting...

I think I'm going to have to take the no checkpoints approach to this game. It's a much longer game than we're used to, and though I played a lot this weekend, I don't think I'm anywhere near what I'd call a good checkpoint.

I think it would be best to plan ahead and play at a pace where you can finish the whole game this month.

Let's talk each other through the game, use your judgment as far as spoilers, and don't forget SirPsycho is an expert.

Ironically, my wife has that outfit. ;)

What a coincidence! My future wife does too.

On another note, who all has started?

The last place I was at I had just split up with the circus crew and been brought back to the fort. Viktor and Flik told me to go recruit. I got Millie and Bonaparte.

Psycho, what do I do to trigger the next story event? I'm not in the mood to be wandering around aimlessly just yet.

Did you get Mukumuku at the big tree in Kyaro? There are some more people to recruit in the area including the same forest Bonaparte was in. The next story event should trigger in Toto.

I keep hoping to get the Anita glitch where she's level 99 when you recruit her but its never happened to me.

I don't care, I'm double posting since its just Gray and I playing.

These are the big tactical battles. I mentioned them briefly in the podcast for the first game, but here is their full glory. In this particular battle that little unit in the middle is Gilbert, and you have to keep him alive since he's a Star of Destiny.

When you or the enemy attack a specific unit you get this sweet animation of individual soldiers charging at each other. This is Miklotov, he's a Star himself but at this point he's controlled by the AI and it will be a long time before he's recruited. You can actually visit the town he hails from, Matilda, by using the infamous gate glitch. You can really line your pockets and level up like mad while running around. Assuming you can survive even one battle of course.

Now, for some plot updates...

Gray mentioned he wasn't going to do checkpoints for this game since its long and the transitions are less defined. Getting HQ in week one would have been a daunting task for those with limited play time. Next play session I have I am going to rush to HQ myself though.

On another note, Two River is one of my favorite cities in the entire series.

I finally popped this in yesterday.  This game's story really grips you right from the beginning.  It was nice to see a couple of familiar faces early on.  Also, what I've heard of the soundtrack so far is already better than the entirety of the first game's soundtrack.

Anyway, I made it to the first town and went to the inn to save, and I was told that there wasn't enough free space on my memory card....  :grrr:

If you're playing on PS3 you can make virtual memory cards and switch them on the fly.

I'm playing on a PS2 with an original PS1 memory card, so I was SOL at that moment.  I've since cleared some space on my card, so I'm good to go for next time.

Good to see people coming out the woodwork. To be clear, no there are no checkpoints this month. This is quite a long game so make your own pace and let the conversation here guide you.

checkpoints are always difficult in non-linear games, what's half-way for you could be near the end for someone else. good call on the no checkpoints this time imo

PS3 video output is pretty crazy. My screenshots above are using HDMI output.

The PS3 may be doing some filtering and/or scaling. You can change the settings if you don't want it to do that...
Settings -> Game Settings -> PS - Upscaler
Settings -> Game Settings -> PS - Smoothing

I love this game's headquarters. People move around it, or seem like they move around it. Early on its most noticeable in the tavern since Viktor and Flik will hang out there from time to time. Sometimes both will be there, sometimes only one will be there, other times neither of them will. This just expands as you recruit more people and level the town up, like the audience of your dancer, and your Iron Chef judges.

Hey everyone, even though I decided not to go with weekly checkpoints for this game, I figured since today is the 15th it would be good to post some kind of halfway point. I am honestly not as far in the game as I would like to be right now (because I've been playing too much Ico), so I conferred with my pal SirPsycho.

It's a little tricky as this a major plot point and spoiler, so only use it if you feel you must. But if you've...

...you're making a good pace.

So how is everyone doing? Enjoying the vastly improved gameplay, inventory system, graphics, sound, and story?

I took this a few days ago but here's some fun facts about Jeane in this game. She runs the rune shop in Two River, but moonlights as the runemastery teacher at the University in Greenhill. When the story takes you to Greenhill she's teaching her class at the time, and all the boys are trying to hide their hard ons. Can you blame them?
