Title: philips cd-i
Post by: Dennis Fleaman on February 25, 2015, 04:27:01 PM
Are there hardcore philips cd-i collectors here on rf generation ?

My brother just posted his collection video on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2kGL5pOLf8

I was suprised to hear that there are quite a few Dutch exclusive cd-i games.

Would love to see more love for the system.

Zelda sucks as well.  The few other games I played on my CDI system...... well........ lets just say, I don't own a CDI system anymore for a reason.  LOL

I don't have one but I really want to have all 3 Zelda titles.  I've played Wand of Gamelon before and it's sooo bad!

The cd-i gets a lot off crap but there are some good games for the system. Pac panic for exsample that is showed in the collection video.

Oh come on! Pac Panic? How desperate for a good game do you have to be before you consider that a good game? The CD-i is the worst of the worst. Everything about it is awful.

Your brother is showing the rest of the world Lingo and calls it 'great fun'.

Some of you guys might enjoy this ! There is almost no information about Dutch exclusive cdi games on the internet.

https://youtu.be/VejiaKnV1Gc

This video shows 4 people having fun with the philips cd-i !
They are playing the Rare Dutch exclusive game called sport freaks.
This game is based on a Dutch TV show. ( the video has some English subtitles) Sport quiz questions. (Very Hard)

Sport questions are being asked after 3 slots rol.
the first slot shows the sport. The second one shows the year and the last one the country.
Based on these 3 slots you will get a corresponding question

The thing about the CD-i is that it was never really meant to be a game system... at least, not in the same way that SNES and Genesis are. It was basically meant to bring the CD multimedia revolution from the PC to the living room... except said revolution fizzled out really fast. Stuff like encyclopedias or interactive how-to discs were its bread and butter, and games were more of an afterthought, with things like trivia and board games being the focus rather than action. The capabilities were not much better than DVD menus, so it's not a big surprise when games like Zelda don't turn out all that well. Frankly, I find it amazing that they managed as well as they did with some of the games (like Atlantis: The Last Resort (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Otp_chdnc4g#t=109)).

Where the system really shined was FMV games like Dragon's Lair, where it didn't require a whole lot of logic or interactivity... just skip around a big movie and throw it at the digital video cartridge. The video quality meant the CD-i versions were probably the best ports until DVD.
