Collectorcast Episode 30: Challenge from the Darxide

Episode 30 discussion thread: http://www.rfgeneration.com/forum/index.php?topic=15412

Homebrews, repros, and pirates, oh my! In this episode we try to peel these apart and talk about the distinctions and overlaps of each category. It seems like there should be clear dividing lines, but we discover it's not quite that simple. We're also back for another round of questions and answers, along with a special announcement about RetroWorld Expo.

Listening now.

@Duke & Bill: Are you planning to buy Shovel Knight Battletoads edition?

@Duke: Did you pick up Lords of the Fallen for $10 during the recent sale? I thought about renting the game.

@Bill: I find myself in the same situation haven't recently sold our house. Do you have any recommendations on packing up your games... or is that saved for a future Collectorcast?

@Crabby: Have you played any of Wayforward's other games like Shantae?

@Duke: Did you receive the poster with last year's 8-bit X-mas?

I would count most Super Fighter Team games in the Licensed Reproductions category.

Did Bill make a get off my lawn analogy?  ;)

What about translations like Earthbound for NES?

What about licensed hacks? http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=J-093-S-00060-A

What do you think/consider Dendy?

I have a couple homebrews/hacks that I've picked up recently. I'll add some more information about them....

You're right right Crabby, "A Boy and His Blob" for Wii is amazing! I bought this a while back and really enjoyed it. Beautiful hand-drawn game.

I finally saw a copy the other day, but it was $20.00 at Half Price Books. I have a 50% off coupon that's good for Sunday. I'm hoping it's still there then, as I'm going to grab it if available. I've been looking for it forever.

Coincidence that I published a somewhat related article recently and that the song "Blurred Lines" got busted for infringement in the amount of 7.5 million dollars this week? I think not.

Also, I never said there was not a complete NES set, I said 2600. Just a misspeak I think, but I don't want hatemail.

I'm pretty sure there is no way to cancel letters once they've been sent, sorry.

Glad Boy and his Blob is getting a little attention!

I havn't played Shantae yet,  but I just found out they did Contra 4 which I picked up not to long ago so I'm gonna have to move that one up the backlog a few notches.

@Crabby: Contra 4 is a great game that deserves a play. Enjoy!

@Addicted: Yes

@Addicted: Packing games can be tricky.  The bulk of my collection is at my parent's house a few miles away.  The games are very close and in a waterproof basement so I feel safe. For the games I did move, I prefer very small boxes, like banker boxes.  They are sturdy and easy to move, pack, and unpack.

@Addicted: I feel many more "Get Off My Lawn" references as I continue to age.

Not sure if these were to be saved for the show, but I want to tackle them.

@Duke & Bill: Are you planning to buy Shovel Knight Battletoads edition?

Of course!!

@Duke: Did you pick up Lords of the Fallen for $10 during the recent sale? I thought about renting the game.

I bought it back when the MS store had their crazy trade in any 5 games deal. So about $10 is what I paid. I enjoyed it enough to play it through twice. If you like Dark Souls, this is up your alley. Not as good, but still pretty well done.

@Duke: Did you receive the poster with last year's 8-bit X-mas?

Yes sir!

What about translations like Earthbound for NES?

What about licensed hacks? http://www.rfgeneration.com/cgi-bin/getinfo.pl?ID=J-093-S-00060-A

What do you think/consider Dendy?

Earthbound is a dumped prototype, so that would be a reproduction.

Licensed hacks that are published by the rights holder? Just normal releases.

The Dendy Jr. is just a Famicom clone that was big in Russia. Pirate all the way.

@Crabby: The Shantae series are good metroid clones but aside from the first one they are all digital. Give them a shot if you can find them on the cheap. I forgot that Shantae Risky's Revenge is free for IOS this week.

http://toucharcade.com/2015/03/12/developer-wayforward-technologies-celebrates-their-25th-anniversary-with-a-sale/

@Bill: Banker's boxes are good idea. Did you put your boxes in protectors before you put them in banker's boxes?

@Duke: I'll keep an eye out for a cheap copy of Lords of the Fallen. What Famicom Pirates do you recommend? (Harry's Legend, Titanic?)

Don't repeat what I did. I moved ~3000 games and hardware all at once:

It's mostly Post Office Large Flat-Rate boxes with some Lowe's packing boxes and Banker's Boxes where I could find them. The Banker's Boxes worked decently, but you have to be careful with the handles as you can damage whatever's inside by jabbing your hands inside or resting the weight of the box against your hand. If at all possible, you want a tight a fit as possible, and carry it by the bottom.

The flat-rate boxes worked perfectly at the time, but I instantly regretted having to move >50 of them, and it made things difficult to find since I packed a ton of things in flat-rate boxes. As a suggestion - get a large box for things that are light-weight and not crushable, and use a cardboard insert to compartmentalize the box. It'll save you having to move a ton of boxes at once (e.g. 5 boxes just for promo items for me). Also, find a way to instantly identify what you packed - big, brightly-colored stickers, rather than writing, work wonders since you can identify it at a distance.

Street Fighter is interesting for the novelty, and Earthworm Jim is worth grabbing. The two Harry Potter games I have are ok, but they didn't excite me much. Aladdin III is a mediocre shooter. I'd love to find the Super Mario World pirate for Famicom.

Bil totally said "whiskey knee." Turns out that is a line of women's boot or something, I did a google image search. Don't know what that says about Bil....

and

I can't decide if Duke is trolling us or we need to troll him   :-\

Morrowind HD is totally a thing. Twice over....at least.

There are things like the "Morrowind Sounds and Graphics Overhaul"
http://www.moddb.com/mods/morrowind-overhaul-sounds-graphics/downloads/morrowind-overhaul-sounds-graphics
Which is one of many mods for the game.

There is also the Skywind project which is remaking Morrowind in the Skyrim engine with new graphics and voice acting and whatnot.
https://tesrenewal.com/
https://tesrenewal.com/skywind-faq

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ql3FNCrYkGU

Seems like there was another major project in the works too, I just can't remember what it was at the moment.....

I still think CGE Adventures is not a homebrew. There were at least half a dozen people who worked on it, programers got paid money, it had an official release, it comes in a real box with art and feelies. For me, games that should be called 'homebrew' is maybe a smaller group than what others think that term applies to.

I don't play games on PC, and I don't own one. When I say it needs an HD remake, I mean on console.

The game was clearly sold after the commercial lifespan of the 2600, and it was not sold at any retail establishments to my knowledge. If not homebrew, what should it be called?

All of my NES and 32X games are already in protectors, everything else just went into the banker boxes, it was mostly clamshell and cd case stuff so it wasn't too bad.

@Bill & Shadow: Thanks for the suggestions! You never truly know how much stuff you have until you have to pack it for a move.

@Duke: Thanks for the suggestions! I'll keep an eye out for the Mario World pirate. Have you seen the Mickey Mania famicom downgrade/pirate?

No problem. Just to point out the need to label things, I'm still finding incorrectly labeled boxes from when I moved almost 3 years ago in my garage.

I thought I would post this here since it is on topic:

Dear Addicted,

You are getting this email because you've purchased Pier Solar REPRINT and/or REPRINT_EP in the past.
We wanted to inform you that the games shipped from February 2015 has a small design issue.
This issue concerns a very few people, please read below:

If your Mega Drive or Genesis shows the "Licensed by Sega" text at power-on, you wont be affected.
The issue will only trigger on Mega Drive 1 or Genesis Model 1, non-TMSS (without the "Licensed by Sega" text).

If affected: The game will not start on first power-on.
A workaround: You need to press RESET button after power-on to start the game. The game will then play normally.
A definitive fix: We cannot fix the issue at the moment, we will get back to you when any updates.

Persons willing a refund or having questions can contact the costumer support. To make it simple, if you didn't receive your shipped games yet, we would appreciate you contact us after having received them.
We apology again for the late announcement. We will keep everyone informed.

Best Regards

WATERMELON TEAM

Dude, you shoulda waited 'til April 1st to release this. And people say I'm impatient...

Still, it did remind me of a couple Cracked.com "unnecessary censorship" photoplasties:

Maybe I just hypothetically own all those Chinese pirates...

Virus Cleaner is unavailable at the moment, but you can grab it here: http://www.airwalkstudios.com/store.php

The same author has a new game available now: http://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?cPath=30&products_id=137

not exactly in the line of what you guys were talking about but somewhat related:

what about reproduction cartridge labels, manuals, or the "collector cases" you see everywhere now? how do you feel about those?

examples on this site: https://www.retrogamecases.com/shop/products/cartridge-labels/n64-cartridge-labels/

for me they're bad if they're not clearly repro, like i believe someone mentioned in this episode in regards to games. this site says the labels say "reproduction" somewhere on them, so in my mind that's alright as long as you know as a collector to watch out for that. what i worry about are anything like these getting out there without clear warnings on them, so you might think you're buying a mint condition box for something and it's actually a repro.

I don't like the idea of selling labels like that. It just make trying to cheat someone that much easier. Better to have a rough label than a fake label IMHO.
