This is my favorite Uncharted game. Put me on the list please.

Picked this up a while back but haven't had a chance to play it.  I'm in.

I'm told that the similarities to Uncharted is pretty obvious. But on the other hand, Uncharted kind of started off as a Tomb Raider clone. I think they were jokingly calling it Dude Raider (which isn't a good name for a game and probably better suited to other.... entertainment.).

That's a very good point that I am always forgetting. I'm being sincere though. Everything I hate about Uncharted is largely absent from this game leaving only the good stuff. This is a game I've been wanting to replay since the first time I finished it.

I'm going to try to make time for this one.  I've been meaning to revisit this game via the Definitive Edition on PS4 ever since it was given to me by a friend.  My hands are already tied with Paper Mario, so we'll see how that goes.

I'm teetering on playing this game. I was never a fan of the PSX games and sort of stopped playing the series after TR2. I think the rough controls and camera angles were what ultimately drove me away. However, I know that this more modern game will be totally different and more polished. It would be kind of neat to get the Lara Croft backstory. Like Disposed, I need to sink some time into Paper Mario........ugh, decisions.

Count me in. The German voice of Lara is done by my favourite actress back then Nora Tschirner, so I am excited to play my first Tomb Raider game.

I think I like the German voice over better.

Just found out Lara Croft was an archeologist. I can dig that  8). Always thought she was one of those rare cultural artefact thieves.

I hit 100% on this one last year. Very good game - was really pleased that Square-Enix got to work on this one. They didn't disappoint! Also interested to hear what everyone thinks.

To those who have played the game before, I just want to comment that despite the progression system, which may make you reluctant to "start from scratch" again, I must say the game is even better on the second playthrough. I have not once felt as if I was really missing something that I knew was coming further along in the game. Plus you can try to spec Lara out differently than you did the first time, which is always fun.

Further, although I would argue this game is designed incredibly well, the first time I played through I had a handful of moments where I didn't know where to go or what I was supposed to do. The second time through it is really hard to get lost the same way. Also even though you know the solutions to all the puzzles, they're still fun to actually do.

I played the game for the first time in July of 2013 if anyone's wondering.

I first played the game around September of 2013, and I have to agree that I'm enjoying my second playthrough much more than my first.  I don't remember too much about the story, so it feels like a pretty fresh experience to me.

Having had a rainy Sunday, I already spent 4 hours on Yamatai. It's the first kind of these games (i put them all under the "Ass. Creed, Batman, Uncharted-category") i really played more than "some minutes to test if the games is in working order" on PS3/360-Generation. I am really amazed for the good. You can clearly retrace the next steps, that story-telling in Video Games has taken. Being Zelda LttP the last game i finished, you can see how much we have gotten more into movie/cinema-like presentation. That goes not without saying, that the pixels had of course little bit more charme, and I would miss something if the Next-Gen would have been my my first-Gen, so to say.

My Girlfriend spent some minutes watching me play and asked: "Is there more than 1 Lara Croft game? I only know her from the 90s, with the pistoles, khaki shorts and the very Big Boobs?" So I had to tell her this is some kind of pre-quel, and yes with som changes on Lara, not only in size...because Gamers have evolved...sometimes :)

For a story behind that:
Team Ninja planned to tone down the "boob physics" and reduce the breast size some in Dead or Alive 5, but Japanese fans complained very loudly about it.

I find the "remodeling of each strand of hair" to look very weird. While Lara's ponytail looks better the hair on her head looks a little like a mop. Other than that I think it's a good looking overhaul.

Anyway, I'm super excited for this game and the first checkpoint is now in the main post.

I guess we know who packed Lara's suitcase in the Definitive Edition:

Anyway, having played both the original version and the Definitive Edition, I will agree that I like the original Lara better.  I think with the DE, they were trying to make her look more like the Lara from the PS2 games.

She does look pretty pissed in that picture. I played halfway through the game on PS3 but I got busy and forgot about it for a few months. Restarted it on PS4 and I should let you guys know there is a really bad game ending glitch I encountered right before the end. I ended up restarting & running through the game really fast and eventually going back to get 100%.

The glitch has to do with the 'fast tracking' from area to area. Not 100% sure how or when it occurs, it's worth looking in to. Basically it autosaves when you fall of a cliff or die & corrupts your file :(

I read about this right before I started the game but had assumed that it had been patched by now.  After doing some research, it seems like some people are still getting corrupted save files.  The best thing you can do is create multiple save files and/or regularly upload your save file to the PSN cloud.

The second checkpoint is now posted.

I'm enjoying the game so far. It's a grittier version of Uncharted. But the combat feels very similar. Tight spaces with too many enemies. I'll usually lure baddies out of hiding to chase me then quickly turn around to mow them down.

i never trust game tutorials, one of the first things i tend to do in games is hit every button to see what happens.

I used to read manuals religiously before they stopped printing them. I think the issue is more about developers wanting to find that balance between teaching mechanics and having the player discover them.

...Or you can press every button and see what happens

well, when i say i don't trust them i don't mean that i don't read the manual or i skip tutorials, i do both of those things thoroughly. i just like to also experiment a bit too and not rely completely on the game telling me every detail.

I had a similar problem where I didn't know how to switch weapons for most of week 1.  It's curious what is and isn't taught in-game.

To be fair, this info is in the manual, but I disregarded the manual after I realised it was one of those cruddy 8-page affairs (which usually only exist to tell you how to access PSN).  I miss the days when games came with full colour manuals and artwork T_T .

Hi Everyone. I'm new to the site. I've heard good things about this site from "The Beast" Disposed Hero. He told me about the community playthroughs a while back. I've been meaning to get on here and join in on some, just now getting around to it. But I was actually given this game on steam and I've played around with it a little and really enjoyed the "little" I experienced. I always start games and never finish them so I figured these community playthroughs might help me with completing some of the games Ive always wanted to actually beat. I might be a little late to jump on the wagon. But count me in. I'm going to start tonight on this game. I'll be playing on pc via steam. I hope It's not to late to join the playthrough. And just want to say I'm happy to be a part of this site. Seems really cool to me. Look forward to talking with you guys.

I just wanted to check in. Ive made it to the part where you meet up with Roth. I know I still have a ways to go. But I just wanted to say that this game is BEAUTIFUL! I really love the graphics. My cpu isn't to "up to date" I mean its not a piece of crap either but I can't run this game on the highest graphics settings. I have to put everything on about medium. But wow...graphics really are great. Couldn't imagine how gorgeous it would be on a more high end system. anyway... I'm enjoying the game very much up to this point. Glad I decided to join the playthrough.

I don't know how to do the spoiler tag thing yet someone will have to explain it to me when they get on. But *SPOILER ALERT*  - I made it a little bit after you find the SECOND pilot. Not sure if that's after the cavern or before the cavern as far as the checkpoints go. I had the day off from work so I feel I made some good progress. I'm really enjoying the game a lot. A LOT! lol...Having never played this game before I'm really enjoying it guys. This game is right up my alley. I've gotten pretty good with the combat system I'm pulling off some really amazing kills and the gun fights really get my adrenaline going. Really enjoying the story and the sense of adventure up to this point. Can't wait to see how the plot plays out. Good choice for a playthrough. Later guys.

Well, yours truly started playing last night and was able to get in a few hours of gameplay. The controls remind me a lot of the original Tomb Raider mechanics in terms of the buttons you use and actions you pull off, but WOW, this game is incredibly smooth (not like the old games for sure)! Everything feels right about the controls and boy is this game beautiful.

I really like the premise of going back in time to see Lara and get her history. I'm really hoping that more of her past and details about her family will open up as well. I made it to the 3rd camp last night, right after your group gets captured and you have to use stealth to get away. I have a suspicious feeling about some of my "friends" and wonder if one or a few of them are  involved with the mercenaries on the island. Oh well, I guess I'll have to find out. :)

Later guys.

Alright I've been dying to post this image since the game started and I think I'm safe as far as spoilers in regards to where we are with the checkpoints, but I'll use the spoiler tags anyway.

I've never seen that movie, but I still remember those previews from when it first came out.  That scene in Tomb Raider immediately reminded me of it.

The gunplay in this game is great and the highlight of the game for me.  I never got tired of the combat sections.  It only gets better and better further into the game as you get more weapons and upgrades to work with.

I'm enjoying the game SO much I think I would put it on my top 5 at least favorite games of all time.

Considering that this will probably be only the 5th game you've ever beaten, that's not too much of a stretch.  ;)

J/k man, I'm glad you're enjoying it, and glad to have you along for the ride.

In an odd turn of events, it seems I inadvertently played/just beat this month's modern community playthrough game xD. To be fair....I started in late March, so I only sorta cheated O_o.

Thoughts: (Spoilers marked)

-This game looks gorgeous...I'm playing on 360, and I still marvel at all the detail. No where near as pretty as Rage though.

- In a weird way, I feel kinda uncomfortable with Laura. This is the only game that has ever made me feel pseudo-"misogynistic" for finding a main character attractive. Its like "come on, she just survived X...you can't objectify her butt no matter how much the camera zooms in on it, or her clothes degrade.

- I only used the bow and the

I have to disagree with that.  This is actually one of the few games where I used all of the weapons pretty much evenly.  Each weapon seems to have its unique merits, and I felt like certain weapons were better suited for certain situations.  I regularly swapped between weapons depending on the challenges I was faced with.

Not sure I agree with that- I use the bow (and handgun if desperate) MUCH more because they are easiest to pull off headshots, even in heavy firefights.

Bow and machine gun for me. I try to stealth as much as possible and when I'm spotted the lead go flying.

Interesting.  I guess it just goes to show that we all have different play styles.

I still found each weapon to have their unique strengths.  Bow for stealth, pistol for picking off enemies at mid-long range, rifle for mid range crowd control, and shotgun for when they get in close.

I'm gonna have to agree with disposed hero on this one. I pretty much had fun swapping to the different weapons throughout the game. I didn't really have a problem pulling off headshots easier with any certain weapon. Of coarse some weapons were better suited for long range and some short range but that's any game. I enjoyed using and upgrading all of the weapons. None of them felt broken or rendered useless. Sounds like you just PREFERRED using certain weapons. But I definitely wouldn't go as far to say the other weapons were USELESS. Just didn't suit your playstyle. I enjoyed all the weapons. And glad they included them all. I liked all the weapons too close to have a favorite. I will say it was awesome going stealthy and picking off people un-noticed with the bow. But I seriously enjoyed all the weapons.

I found myself using those two weapons alot also. But I used all the weapons here or there. But if there was a stat that tracked weapon usage I'd probably have the highest usage with these two weapons as well.

Man I can't wait!...I still haven't completed the game but I'm pretty sure I don't have TOO far to go. Think I'm like 80% complete. But Im really looking forward to how this story plays out. I Really want to know how they make it off this Island...OR IF they make it off the island. Either way....I'm loving this game man. Disposed Hero told me if I liked this game I should check out Uncharted as well. Ive never played that series before either. But after giving tomb raider a playthrough I'M DEFINITLEY checking out Uncharted. Loving the playthrough guys. So glad I joined. Can't wait for you guys to do the playcast. That's another thing, I just wanted to say I love your guy's playcasts. I just think it's really cool of you guys to care enough to host the site and do playcast about the games....Just loving every minute of it. Thanks Guys!

Thanks Neo! It's comments like that which excite us to keep doing what we do.

Uncharted is among my favourite series of games, but be aware it's very different from Tomb Raider. Uncharted is more like India Jones, so think cool explosions and gun fights with the main character offering witty one-liners.

I won't say anything about Tomb Raider's ending. I didn't quite like it, but I didn't dislike it either.

Don't be worried. The final boss battle is actually really great. You really see how Lara evolves into the character we know today. The ending is a little too cliche for me, but that doesn't mean it's bad. But really it's only the very last scene that I'm kind of casting in a bad light. Keep at the game and have fun with it. I can be overly critical so don't let anything I say influence your enjoyment of the game.

yeah, saturday morning nearly 5 free hours to raid to through the next levels of Tomb Raider, before i have to raid furniture stores with my better half ...uuugh :)
I often had no choice, in which weapon to use, because i am wasting a lot of ammunition because i am so bad at aiming. But really preferring the bow and the rifle.

Welcome on board NEO - yeah the Playtrough is really the best way to better behave on finishing a good game :)

Do you guys know that feeling of getting sucked to much into a games action and shooting parts because of using very good headphones all-around sound? I am sometimes rather use the sound of the normal TV coming only from the front because with the in-game-feeling of the headphones i get overanxious in the fighting and with the hectic (but very very good music)  i seem to play and act more chaotic than i want play. maybe i should wear a heart-frequency-checker :)

I know exactly what you mean. Good sound can make a great game even better. And you really appreciate the developers that implement it nicely into a game. Just one more piece of the puzzle to immerse yourself into another world. And I really like the Tomb Raider sound/sound effects. They really did a good job with the gun sounds in particular. The gun shots sound really nice in this game in a quiet room with my headphones cranked to full blast....POW!!!! lol

I thought the ending was awesome. I won't say too much, don't wont to spoil it for anyone. But...whew...I loved the last 15-30 minutes of that game, and I CAN'T WAIT till' Rise of The Tomb Raider comes out! I don't beat games all too often so actually completing one feels great! lol...I think signing up for this playthrough is what pushed me to complete it. So I hope to join many more in the future. Thanks for including me guys. I had a ball.

Just beat the game at 77%, so I'll be spending Week 4 relic hunting and doing the 2 tombs I missed.

For the most part I enjoyed it- the exploration and relic hunting were my favourite parts, the level design was mostly good, especially when an environment changed itself.  The visual cues were good, so there weren't many times I couldn't figure out where to go next.  I did find that there were way too many sections that were just straight up shooting galleries, and it did detract from the experience.  That aside, the character journey of Lara was satisfying, and I am glad I played it.

Also, Lara is a pyromaniac.

Yesterday finished the game, too.
Got all the documents and upgrades- but i had to do a little bit of extra hunting to "afford" all the weapon-upgrades.

I liked the up-leveling system of the game very much, how Lara evolved from a defenseless woman to a deadly killer.

Also the many different areas ( for example the shipwrecked yards or windy mountain stages) are a big plus of the game.
Finding the first documents/gps without the "super-vision" was fun, and finding the not so obvious ones with it, too.
the faiding in and out sound-effect of the super-vision was really cool. as you mentioned on one of the last playtroughpodcast the new batman games use a similar feature, i am looking forward playing them also.
Tomb Raider could have be less shooter from my opinion, but i want to try out the lara croft trilogy 3 game collection on ps3 , hoping to find more climbing and puzzle parts.

thanks for playing this one together. what did you like best or for the worse? see you next month :)
