Awesome!  Shining Force is one of the best games on the Genesis, and one of the best tactical/strategy RPG's I have played.

This will be my first toe dip into the tactical RPG genre. Just ordered an extension for my Genesis controller for the R5 today. Should be a great month.

I'm up for it - I got into RPGs during the SNES days, so I am curious about how they were done on the MD.  I also started playing Phantasy Star 2 between Tomb Raider checkpoints.

I am in. I am a big fan of the Shining Force series, especially I and II. I have been looking forward to replaying this, and hopefully beating it (Not sure if I ever have.)

I'll let you know how they work out. I bought all of them from the same vendor/same brands.

I have this via the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, but I'm not a SRPG guy, and would want to tackle this one when I get the itch for it.  Plus, with all the playthroughs I have been involved with, I still haven't got back to Xenoblade Chronicles, and want to finish that before I tackle another RPG.  I'm gonna sit this one out.

I'll join in on this one. Kirby's Epic Yarn is 6-ish hours so I think I can juggle two games.

The Steam version is only $3 but I'd prefer a Genesis cart. If anyone can help me out I'd really appreciate it.

Rich, maybe you can add this to the main post. If anyone's playing on Steam saving/loading seems to be troublesome but there's a solution:

If you use the in-game quitting (through the priest) it ends your game and any saves you made through the priest do not persist.

Do not use the priest to exit the game, just hit escape and use save slot on the container program (where you start all the games including Shining Force.) An added bonus to this method is you can save any time during the game.
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1771469

OR

you have to use the save slot feature as part of the emulator or F5 for quick save (F9 to load quick save)

That's enough for me to get psyched. I really trust Disposed Hero's opinions when it comes to games.

Sign me up banana. I'm interested to find out what this game is all about. It's one I've never played, and don't really know too much about. I'ts gonna be exciting for me. I'M IN!!!

Nice!  It seems we have a nice little group playing this game so far. It seems like we have a few people who have played through it before, so it will be nice to have some experienced members to give advice.

I will say that even though howlongtobeat has an estimated log time of 22-23 hours for this game, some first time players may find it takes a little longer. I started playing it last week and one thing that I have noticed is that combat sequences are very slow and methodical. Now, please take into consideration that this is the first tactical game that I have ever played, so some of you may be much more familiar with this type of system. I initially had a tough time with the slower pace, but I have settled in and the format has grown on me.

I worked out the checkpoints yesterday, so look to be playing around 4-6 hours a week depending on your experience. If anyone has played this game before and has suggestions for achievements, please let me know. I know that a lot of the characters are easily added through the story, but some, like the samurai and ninja, are tougher to find so I have added them to the achievement list.  Looking forward to a great month!

I also started playing Phantasy Star 2.
That game is unbelievable. It probably doesn't hold up well today, but IMO it's got one of the best soundtracks in video game history, THE best plot twist in video game history (that a certain other RPG ripped off), and the best ending I've seen in a video game.

General rule of thumb for recruiting characters:  If you encounter an NPC that has a character portrait, most likely they can be recruited.

And also, talk to that NPC every time you enter a town. Some recruits will only join you if you talk to them at a certain time and then return to talk to them later.

Thanks to everyone who has signed up for the playthrough so far. Though the playthrough starts tomorrow, I went ahead and posted the first checkpoint today in case any of you want to get started early and get your feet wet. As I might have mentioned before, this is my first experience with a tactical RPG. I've had only a few growing pains so far, and am really enjoying this game a lot!

As many of you probably already know, Shining Force is an RPG that involves strategic battles where you control individuals, instead of one large group. Encounters are also made up of large battles instead of random skirmishes with "wandering monsters" as in many RPGs.  I mention this, because in this game, grinding is very different and I don't want any first time players to get frustrated if they get to an area that seems impassable. (I AM MARKING THIS SECTION ON HOW TO GRIND WITH A SPOILER TAG, THOUGH THERE ARE REALLY NO SPOILERS. I WOULD ADVISE FIRST TIME PLAYERS READING THIS BECAUSE IT IS VERY HELPFUL).
Spoiler (hover to show)

Though this game has its quirks, like Phantasy Star, it is a great example of an early RPG that should not be missed. It's really fun to see how this genre evolved through time and though I don't know a lot about the history of RPGs, there are several classic tropes/mechanics in Shining Force that are still alive today and may owe these to their predecessor. Come and join us, and let's have a great time this month!

As listeners to our podcast know, my kids really love to watch me play these games. My daughter is in 1st grade and has recently taken to writing and reviewing the games I play. Apparently, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Ha! I'm always amazed at the things my kids pick up on and though their comments typically seem simple on the surface, I always find them rather spot on and even as smaller pieces that lead me to think about the game deeper. Anyway, since my daughter's first log about the game is spoiler-free, I thought that I would post it here to start off the playthrough.

Haha, I love the little mini-review Rich.  Better than most of the biased 'professional' reviews out there today.

Anyway, I got started a little later than I would have liked on this one, but I think I'm near the end of Chapter 1 now.  I've really enjoyed this game in the past, but any time I have played it prior to this playthrough has been on an emulator, which has the luxury of save states.  For this playthrough, I'm actually playing on a Genesis with an original cartridge.  I was worried that it would start to feel very 'grindy' without having the option to save mid battle, but so far I'm still really enjoying it.

That being said, I think all of you who are playing on a platform that allows you to use save states (Steam, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, etc.) will really come to appreciate that feature while playing this game.  Some of the battles can get quite long, and not being able to save during a battle can often clash with our busy adult lives.  I hope it doesn't become much of an issue for me or anyone else playing on the original hardware.  *crosses fingers*

Yeah man, I'm a few hours into TWD and am going to get back to it (even already bought Season 2). The playthroughs take precedent and family life has taken a good deal of my time. Hope you can join us Shaggy.

It's funny, but I think she has a tendency to express these sort of deeper thoughts in the simplest way, or more so has the ability to make me think about these games more. For instance, one of her observations is that "the [girl] is the most [powerful]." With all of the Gamergate stuff in the news (yes, I will politely stay away from this topic), of course my mind has naturally begun to think about the role of gender in a lot of the games I play. My daughter is very "girly," except on the soccer field where she is extremely aggressive and eats kids' lunches. She has a really cool and adamant sense of "girl power" and really thinks about the roles of the girls in the games I play. Here, she is referring to the roles of the mages in SF and she is pretty spot on about their influence and power in the game. She was beside herself the learn that Samus was a girl when we played Super Metroid, and I thought that was a pretty cool moment for us. I can see us having some great quality time gaming as she grows up. :)

I agree that some of these battles can be long and sometimes the unpredictability of the AI can end your battle quickly if you are not careful. However, I am playing on my Retron5 and will not be using save states. I know that there is a risk, but I want to play the game as it was originally intended to be played. If others want to use save states, that's completely cool. As I have said before, we want everyone who joins our playthroughs to enjoy their experience during the month, so do what gives you the most joy out of gaming. I will admit that I am actually using a character guide to ensure that I get all of the characters in the game. I have a bit of an obsession with games that have collectible characters, so yeah...........there's that. :D

I'm also going to use a character guide since I'm sure there are plenty of characters I missed when I played it before.  I thought I had recruited Gong on my earlier playthroughs, but the method for recruiting him doesn't sound familiar and not like something I would have done without instruction, so now I'm not so sure.  Either way, he's actually a pretty good character, and having more characters for the early battles can be invaluable.

I agree with the unpredictability of the AI, and there is also a lot of randomness in the battles that can come into play.  I actually ended up getting wiped out on the third battle of the game because a random knight strolled up to my main character, did a double attack, and killed him outright (I had full health before the attack).  I almost rage quit, but one good thing to keep in mind is that if you do lose a battle, you still retain all of your experience and levels from the battle, so be sure to save before you throw the controller and turn off the system! ;)

Played through to the end of Chapter 1 last night and I am enjoying it so far. I have played a few later SRPGs and most of the core game elements seem to be here in Shining Force.  I do like that it can transition between an SRPG combat engagement to a more traditional style of RPG to suit the flow of gameplay, although the menu system is aggravating- having to open a menu to talk to people and rearranging character inventory every time you open a chest gets old fast.

Spoiler (hover to show)

And yes, Tao is so far the best character (so long as she has meat to hide behind).  Oddly enough, Centaurs are the hardest to keep alive

Get the tissue ready for TWD.  I hear ya about family life, that's why I've been leery of playing any of these playthroughs.  2 kids in karate, chess club, and a slew of other things.  I'm going to try this month, though.  I love these games and I have never played this one.  Doing it with a community will hopefully help push me.

Finally started and I'm a few battles in.  Super annoying you have to open a menu to talk and search.  Has anyone found anything with search?  Finally found out that in battle you can hit B and see the stats of all characters.  I'm liking it so far, though.

Search is mainly used to open treasure chests and read books from library shelves and signage. However, there are a few hidden items in the game that you can find with this function.

I come up with nothing all the time except when looking at the bookshelves, which tells me titles of books on the bookshelves.  I'm glad I asked because of the annoyance of opening up a menu to search.

Just hit the start of Chapter 3.  That final battle of Chapter 2 was tough for me.  I feel like it really shouldn't have been that difficult, but for some reason the enemies kept evading most of my attacks.  It got so bad that I seriously thought the game was glitching at one point.  :-\

If you go to the main castle in the first town, you can seek out a room to the upper left before entering the castle. There are 6 chests in there with some very helpful items. The chests are great and I'd be sure to check out every area of every town before buying new weapons and items. You can save some coin this way.

I just got back to the first town after going through the first 3 battles.  I haven't seen any chests yet.  I must look harder.

If you go to the main castle in the first town, you can seek out a room to the upper left before entering the castle. There are 6 chests in there with some very helpful items. The chests are great and I'd be sure to check out every area of every town before buying new weapons and items. You can save some coin this way.

I thought I went everywhere I was allowed to in the first town.  I'll have to look again.

Checkpoint #2 will be going up tomorrow. How is everyone doing so far in terms of progressing? If you have any issues, post them and we can help you through it.

All of my gaming stuff has been packed up for the past few days, but I just pulled my Genesis out last night to play a little Shining Force.  I just finished the first battle in Chapter 3.

I'm at the point now where I have about 4 or 5 more characters total than what I have room for in my active party, so it's getting tough trying to decide who to cut and who to keep.  I'm going to check out a character faq and see what the general opinion is on who the best characters are.

Yeah Steven, I just made it to the beginning of Chapter 6 last night and now have a ton of characters that I don't know whether to swap out or not. I'm not going to consult a guide regarding endgame characters and just kind of go with what works for me. I'm still finding Ken to be really helpful in terms of great damage and an okay tank (lots of HP). Lately, I've ditched my healers for healing items, which I find are sufficient for now and the higher octane offense prevents me from having to heal too much anyway.

I mentioned earlier that I had to do some grinding at the circus battle, but I can honestly say that I haven't had to do any more since then, which has been nice.

As far as defense and power potions go, I used those up when I got them, but didn't know that the Bread of Life, Legs of Haste, and Turbo Pepper (which I haven't found yet), are also one time use character upgrades. If you have saved these items and not used them, be sure to hold onto them for use until after you are promoted. I understand that once promoted, your stats reset and you basically lose the value of these upgrades.

I also want to mention something regarding a great weapon that all of you should pick up along the way during the second checkpoint. I am mentioning it now, since Steven seems to be getting close to this part and I don't want anyone to miss it.

Spoiler (hover to show)

By the way, this game is f@$king fantastic! I love the diversity of the characters and the strategies, and find myself craving it when I have to put it down for a day or two.  ;D

Yeah, my healers were pretty much the first units to go when I needed to make room.  I'm keeping Gong around for now, mostly because he is a pretty decent fighter, and his healing spell comes in handy sometimes.  I think the biggest complaint against Ken is that his defense rating stays fairly low throughout the game, so while he may have really high HP, it gets drained rather quickly.  Perhaps a Defense Ring or something similar would be a good way to offset this.  Right now I have him equipped with a Power Ring, so he's dishing out a ton of damage.

As far as defense and power potions go, I used those up when I got them, but didn't know that the Bread of Life, Legs of Haste, and Turbo Pepper (which I haven't found yet), are also one time use character upgrades. I haven't been using my Defense and Power Potions.  I've been finding quite a few of them, so I should probably start using them.  I didn't know about the items that grant permanent stat upgrades.  I probably never even used those on my previous playthroughs....

I also want to mention something regarding a great weapon that all of you should pick up along the way during the second checkpoint. I am mentioning it now, since Steven seems to be getting close to this part and I don't want anyone to miss it.

Thanks for the tip on the weapon.  I could never figure out if there was any pattern to the Deals that the vendors would occasionally have, but now that you mention it, the deals are probably just any weapons that an enemy drops that you're not able to pick up.

By the way, this game is f@$king fantastic! I love the diversity of the characters and the strategies, and find myself craving it when I have to put it down for a day or two.  ;D

I feel the same way.  I didn't think I would get too into this playthrough since I've played this game before, but it's just as awesome as my first time through!  :)

Also, I wanted to mention something I was previously unaware of in the game in regards to casting spells. As your casters get stronger, they will earn higher levels of certain spells, such as Blaze, Freeze, Heal, etc. Of course the higher level spells cost more mana to cast and do more damage and often affect a wider area. When casting, you are auto set to cast the highest level spell, but until the other day, I did not know that you could still cast the same spells at a lower level (and thus use less mana). You do this by selecting the spell and then pressing your D-pad to the left to lower the spell level (increase it by pressing right). Once you have the level you want, simply press "A" and cast as normal. I know this probably isn't news to some of you. Especially you fancy pants gamers with your goody goody manuals.   ::)

It's funny. I was bitching about why they wouldn't implement a system like this.....and then I accidentally figured it out. It's the small things like this that make the game really ahead of its time.

And also, what the hell does a guy have to do around here to get some KARMA?  ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?  :swear:

This was one of my questions I was going to ask.  I'm playing on the Sonic collection and I have no manual!  Some annoyances in the game that I found is the lack of any description for items.  Does the manual say what each item is?  Another thing is when buying weapons there is no indication of who can use the weapon or how much better/worse/same it is, although that was typical for games like this around that time.  Last is, you can only carry 4 items!  I find these chests and I have to constantly give items to other characters and when you back out of that menu you have to start the holy selection process again.  Annoying!  I still love the game, though. :)

How do your spells level up?  By using them or do they go up with your level.  Something I found out by accident is if you hit B (cancel button) while in a battle on the map, you can scroll to any enemy or someone in your team and see info and stats about them.

Spells level up with your characters. When you buy a weapon, the shopkeeper will ask you who you want to give it to. When you select a toon to give it to that can't use it, the shopkeeper will say, "_____ cannot use this, give it to him anyway?" If you don't want to buy it, just press B and back out. Who can use what becomes common sense after you get use to it: your hero uses swords, the warriors use axes, the centaurs lances and spears, casters use staves, bowmen use arrows (later artillery), and monks and non-humans use no weapons at all. Weapons get stronger as you go from town to town, so just assume any new weapon you haven't seen is better than what you have. Even if you screw up, you can get some of your money back by selling. You earn plenty of gold playing directly through the game and I have had no money issue through Chapter 7.

I took the day off work yesterday due to being very under the weather and between naps, I was able to push through to Chapter 7.  I got very lucky in the battle at the end of Chapter 6 and pulled it out with a last effort and double hit from one of my big hitters.  Though some of the battles (mainly those without bosses) are more "filler" encounters (I don't mean this in a negative way, all of the battles are good), battles with mage bosses can be tedious. I'm finding that even the more trash mob encounters have amped up in difficulty as well and I'm getting a variety of new monsters to handle.

I think the variety of enemies and having to learn the various ways to deal with them is a big part of what makes this game so great. Not only do you have to consider their abilities, strength (who in your party can tank), and range of attack, but you also have to devise how to confront them (i.e. rush in, or wait for them to come to you).

This brings me to the point of this post. From some of the reviews I have read about the game, one of the more frustrating encounters for first time gamers is the Laser Eye battle near the end of Chapter 3, Battle #11, which you will encounter on your way to the 2nd checkpoint. As a result, I am going to provide any of you who are interested with a guide on how to go about this battle safely with minimal loss to your party.

I own Sonic's Genesis Collection, but of course I can't find the disc. It could be in a random DVD case or it could've gotten lost when I moved. It's been a while since I've seen it and I've given a decent search :(

....just checked eBay, the disc is only $10. I think I'll jump on that in 3-5 business days and try to catch up. From what I've been reading here, it looks like it has more depth than I thought.

Yeah, I've been very surprised at how well thought out this game is for being such an early title. Though 1993 isn't too early. Several RPGs had already broken ground. Still, it's very well done both in gameplay and graphically.

That's alright. Keep plugging away. The game has a bit of a learning curve. Try to travel in a group when possible and keep your casters and ranged attackers behind your tanks or warriors.

With all of the movement and strategy, this game plays pretty slow. Just be sure to not get too far behind. ;)

Also, just wanted to mention that there are special weapons you will find in this game. If you have these equipped on a melee guy, be sure to try and "use" them as some have magical powers. When you attack with the magic on these weapons you have to "use" the weapon against an an enemy there will be nothing under the "magic" option.

Good advice, I forgot about this until very recently.  You can also 'use' the rings to grant temporary stat bonuses to your characters.

As a warning, if you 'use' a piece of equipment and it says that the equipment has started smoking, then don't use it again or it will permanently consume that piece of equipment.  I learned this the hard way with my Heat Axe.  :(

I don't think so.  It's completely gone from my inventory.

On the bright side, I lost it during the last battle in Chapter 6, and the weapon shop in the town you start at in Chapter 7 has a good alternative to the Heat Axe, so no big deal.

Hmmm. I know there is a repair option. Maybe the equipment has to be smoking before you repair it. Go to the weapon's shop and give it a try.

Along this line I should also say that when you finish one battle and have the opportunity to return to town and "heal up," be sure to go back to the weapon's shop and check for deals. I found that where there once was a deal or just a single deal, this changes as you progress through battles. Here is an especially good HINT if anyone is interested:

I'm pretty close to the end of the game, only 2 or 3 battles left to go.  At one point I was tearing through the enemy forces, working like a well-oiled machine, then around Chapter 7 or so, it seemed like the evasion rate of the enemies skyrocketed.  Very frustrating.

I've had to tinker with my party a bit.  I tried working with a few characters that I read were really good, but I just wasn't seeing it.  I think I'm settled on my endgame party now.

OMG!!! You guys are gonna laugh at me....lol....Get this...I am playing the game with absolutely no walkthrough and I haven't even read an instruction manual or equivalent...lol....So I'm pretty much just figuring out how the game works as I go. Well....I do have to say I am really enjoying what I've played so far...but get this...lol...Ok...I made it to the first MAJOR fight...not the very first fight in the game but the one after...I would give more detail but I don't want to spoil anything...but the first major fight ok...lol....Well...the first go round I ALMOST got through it but my main character was slain so I had to start the battle over....well.....I go at it again head strong determined this time...well...about three quarters through the fight this time Tao was out of MP so in an attempt to see if any of the items at the store recovered MP I tried out the ol' trusty dusty angel feather not knowing what that items purpose was....lol....needless to say I was warped back to the chapel lol...losing allll my hard earned progress through the fight the second go round....And I was doing pretty good on the second go round...I'm pretty sure I could have beaten it that time....But...Hey, I learned what the angel feathers do...so...no big deal....

Well, I go out for the third go round this time NOTHING ON GODS GREEN EARTH is going to stop me this time...And Im knocking em' dead left and right...make it to the last 2 rune knights....cocky....victory is finally going to be mine after at least 2 good hours of fighting I can see the light at the end of the tunnel....when I remember....hey...the main character had some type of magic spell....egress or something like that...the icon seems like some kind of jump attack..Might take them out in one hit you never no.....why not try to end this battle with a little style....a little flair....show these rune knights THE SHINING FORCE has some cojones...So I select the spell and with a evil grin I almost say take THAT YOU RUNE SUCKING DARK WORLD PUNKS!!!!!!........but.......wait a minute.....no......noooo....I hold my head in a sigh almost laughing at my own failure.....NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! I had warped myself BACK TO THE CHAPEL AGIAN!!!!! I couldn't believe it.....irritating to say the least...but even I have to admit that its kind of funny....So now I have to go back and do the same battle again....for the fourth time....lol....hey...you live you learn....lmao

I do want to say....despite my failure to complete this battle lol....The game is really cool so far...I'm really digging the music....awesome soundtrack so far....Good graphics for the time period...REALLY pretty game for the time period...And I can kind of see what direction the story is going up to this point and I'm really diggin' the game so far...I can see me liking this game a good deal if I can ever make it past THIS 1 BATTLE!!!!! lol.....good game choice though...Having never played it before I'm glad I didn't go my whole life without checking this game out....I can tell it's going to be a good game....seems challenging and I like that in a game....can't wait to feed in some more....butttt......hopefully theres no other way to magically warp back to the chapel I don't know about...cuz if there is....believe me .....I'll find it lmao....later guys....always a blast....Just had to share my monstrous failures with you guys....its funny to me....thought you guys would get a kick out of it....cya

On the bright side, at least you're gaining lots of experience and levels.  Escaping from the battles and replaying them is pretty much the only way to level grind in this game.  I'm pretty sure Egress and Angel Wings are the only ways to escape from battles, but if there is another, I'm sure you'll find it....

Just imagine guys, I have to play co-op games with this guy.

Great story Neo, as I can easily see any of those things happening. Ha!

There is a 3rd way to escape battles, and that is by walking out of the screen where you entered the battle with your Hero.

Yeah. I'm trying not to miss out on stuff. I just hate using walkthroughs. I like to try and figure stuff out myself. Walkthroughs spoil too much for me. I hate knowing whats going to happen before it does. Don't get me wrong though. If I get stuck bad enough I'm not too proud to check the cheat sheets...but I tend to try to save that for an absolute last resort.

Well, I just found a 4th way to escape battles, by using the Speed Ring.  Apparently using it casts Egress instead of granting a bonus to your Speed like I thought it would.

Unfortunately I was at the end of the final battle when I discovered this....

I wouldn't worry about Gong too much Neo. He is at the 2nd battle before you get Gort, so you missed him. No big deal, he's not endgame material.

You can go back after the second battle, after you go back to the first castle the second time.  I got him after I got Gort the second time going to the castle.

Well guys, I finally made it past that battle I was stuck on. And I'm really liking the direction the story's going. I haven't really played a rpg like this in quite a while. I'm really enjoying the tactical element. Playing this is making me want to fire up other tactical rpgs. The only other one I've ever played was final fantasy tactics for the GBA...I liked it well enough...but I didn't really like how the game pretty much had the mission system rather then just a linear story. Which is something I'm really enjoying about this Shining Force game. They made a tactical RPG that ties in really well to the story. Doesn't feel like your just fighting random battles just leveling up....every fight is choreographed very well into the story. It just goes really well together I think. And the battles are pretty massive in comparison to final fantasy tactics. Just seems like the scale of the "battle map" and the amount of enemies you fight are a lot bigger, more so then FF TACTICS. And the story is intertwined with the battles .....I'm just really liking this game. Shame I never even knew it existed before this playthrough...Makes me wonder...Just how many great titles are out there that I don't know about. I thought I knew most the popular titles....Guess I still got some learning to do.

I didn't play the GBA Final Fantasy Tactics that much, but I remember it not being anywhere near as good as the PS1 game.  The Fire Emblem games are also really good tactical RPGs.  There are a bunch of other series in this genre, like Disgaea and some others, but most of them haven't appealed to me very much.  Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying the game.

I went back and replayed the final battle, being sure not to accidentally use Egress this time, and I managed to beat the game!  I mentioned it before, but I originally played this game on an emulator, and while I did enjoy it playing it that way, there's just something about playing it with all the original hardware that makes it so much more satisfying.

Great game.  I was really just planning on phoning in this playthrough and not really playing the game all that much since I have beaten it before, but once I started I just couldn't put it down.  I really should fire up one of the sequels sometime soon.  I've played Shining Force II quite a bit but never beaten it, and I've never played the other games.  I hear Shining Force III is excellent, it's just a shame we never got Scenarios 2 and 3 in North America, although I believe there are translations you can play via an emulator.

Yeah, lots of times when you encounter new enemies in this game, evasion is high. As you level up, you hit more, but also you get new enemies, so it tends to stay about even keel. I think there is a little too much evasion on the offensive side in this game and not quite enough defensive. Still, I found the game very enjoyable despite this.

Congrats on finishing Disposed Hero!  Don't forget to log your achievements.

I have 1-3 right now.  I think I missed out on Gruntz.  I knew I could get him, just didn't know how.  Checked a guide and it looks like I can't go back to get him.  Even with the high evasion rate the game is still very enjoyable and awesome.  When I was doing the Circus battle the Zombies evaded probably 20 times.  Highly annoying!

Thanks, I'm worried I missed 4 now. :)  Maybe I just didn't get that far yet.  I've noticed when in battle if you kill the "main" enemy, the battle will end and you will miss out on experience points.  I'm not sure if each battle has a "main" enemy but it isn't too hard to figure out who the "main" enemy is so make sure you save him for last if possible!

That's a good point. Not all battles have a "main" enemy, but a lot do. The kind of rule of thumb is to not kill the enemy that speaks at the beginning of the battle. This is usually pretty obvious. Thanks for pointing this out.

Furthermore....this game is amazing....such a good trip to the past! OHHHHH how I really genuinely miss the old graphics and gameplay mechanics of these old school games. Stories were ALWAYS good it seems like. And I just love them. This is turning out to be one heck of a fun game to me. Don't get me wrong...I LOVE the newschool games as well and the way they can make games today is absolutely beautiful....but something about these old 16, 32, 64 bit graphics just seem so artistic and colorful and just beautiful to me as well. This game is really pretty. And I love the enemy design and how when you change weapons and classes your characters actually change....GREAT STORY...nice fantasy world....just right up my alley. So glad y'all picked this game....otherwise I would have missed it. I'm having a blast guys...Hope y'all are too. Can't wait to see what kind of stuff unfolds a little later in the story! Later.

When you promote characters, they lose a percentage of their stats (I think it's a quarter or something like that).  But now that they're promoted, you're going to start seeing much higher stat increases when they level up.  Plus, your units can only use the best weapons in the game if they're promoted.  So to put it simply, yeah, it's definitely worth promoting them.  There is a little bit of strategy involved, like if you wait a few levels to promote them, apparently it's better in the long run, but most people just promote at level 10 or so.

About the deals, I'm pretty sure the vendors only offer them if you missed an item in a battle.  Like if an enemy unit drops a really good weapon and you didn't have any inventory space to pick it up, the shopkeeper will offer it as a deal.

Anyway, be sure you take that Moonstone and use it to recruit Zylo before you leave town.  I'm not sure if he's missable or if the game forces you to get him, but either way, you'll definitely want to have him.

Yeah I figured it was worth it to promote them. Just making sure. And about zylo, I had already figured I had to do SOMETHING with him just talking to people around town. Didn't know you could recruit him on "THE FORCE" lol...but I'll make sure to do that. And that definitely explains the deals thing too. I was just wondering because every town ive been too nothing was on the deal list so I guess now I know why. Thanks man. I was just making sure on some things. Sounds like you enjoyed your playthrough. Game is pretty fun isn't it? I like it. Fun playing it with y'all man.

Great, now I have to figure out who to dump.  I found out early that you need to healers to heal. I tried one but I couldn't get to everyone and ran out of magic to heal.

I stopped using healers pretty early on. You have plenty of gold, so buy two seeds for each toon. Remember that you can use the healing items from one character on another during your turn.

I'll second this.  I don't feel like he was an essential character for me personally, but still a great addition to the team.  I wish I could have leveled him up a bit higher before the end of the game so he would have had his higher level spells.

I used Khris for most of the game, but admittedly she was pretty useless.  As soon as I got Torasu (who gets recruited late in the game), I started using him.  I would agree with the comment about ditching the healers and just using Healing Seeds, except Torasu gets the very useful Aura spells, which can heal multiple units in one turn.

Yeah, I actually used Torasu for endgame as well. You get him very late and he has already been promoted, so it's worth keeping him around for Aura. I thought that a lot of the casters got kind of washed out toward the end anyway, but I kept a few around to attack multiple mobs at the same time with the higher level spells. Tao and Domingo made the final cut for me.

Nice to know about torasu. I use lowe and khris on my battle party but have been thinking about ditching them for more useful damage dealers. Have to make sure i get torasu. I do like having 1 good healer on my squad. 2 i think is overkill. Most of the time i hit stay on the healeers turn anyway so just feels like a waste. Torasus multiple healing spell sounds nice. Ive been wanting something like that my whole playthrough so far. Guess i can kind of ditch lowe and chris for now and focus more on damage dealers. Just hold out for torasu. Ill try it anyways see how it goes.

She's pretty much your one dedicated healer from the beginning. The problem is that it is very tough to level a healer; sure, you get points for healing, but not many. I really wished they would have leveled the experience for healing out a little bit and made it more like finishing an enemy, but they do a nice job of giving you a healer near the end of the game.

How about which group of characters found effective?  My group primaraily consisted of Main Character, Tao (loved the group based Magic), Mae, Ken, the knight that started with a V (), Lowe, Gong (until my last 2 battles, took your advice and used Domingo.  I'll use him going forward, truly awesome!), Kokiro, Zylo (the werewolf guy if I misspelled), Gort, Diane, and Luke.  The 2 bird people sucked.  I only used them for 2 battles and said enough of that.  I have a lot of power in my group.  I always forgot that I could use weapons so I constantly used up my healers HP and hoped I could finish the battle

We did discuss the characters, especially noting which ones we thought were most helpful and endgame worthy. Our segment of the podcast almost hit the 2 hour mark! There was a lot to talk about with this game.

I probably should have mentioned Mae on the podcast.  I used her for the entire game, and felt like she was a very good character.  Anyway, my end game party consisted of:

Nice, glad to see a few of you still plugging along. Keep us updated on your progress and share any thoughts you have about the game.

So I finally got a character up to level 20 and than promoted them.  They went back down to level 1 and I was like WTF!  I do like that after the promotion the character looks different and their attack looks different.  A bit refreshing after seeing the same thing over and over again all game.

I had a problem with putting a newly received character in my group later in the game as I was so invested in the earlier characters.  It felt like I was starting over again.

I'm on the battle right after you beat Cain and man, that battle is tough!  I have to do it over again.

Guys....I hate to do it. But I think I'm going to have to admit defeat on this one. I only have one day left to beat the game and I don't think I have enough time to do it. I really haven't been able to make any progress in the game over the last week. We've been real busy at work lately and I'm being promoted to second man in charge so I've really been putting extra effort at work to just try to shine a little so ive been coming home pretty tired just haven't been in the mood to play to much the last couple of days. I hate to do it. But like I said I don't think im going to be able to finish this one this month. It will be a game I complete probably next month. I really do enjoy the game and I think Ive made it far enough to get a good amount of feel for the game. Im glad I signed up but, just not going to be able to complete it this month guys. I got a late start anyway I think that's the main reason I wasn't able to finish it. I wont let you guys down next month though....sorry guys. I tried.

No let down at all. Glad to see that people are enjoying the game. Finish it or not, enjoying it with each other is what it's all about. Great month!

Damn, the battle after Cain with the witch whose name starts with a M is tough!  I've finally beat it after the 5th try.  I'm on Chapter 7 now.  I just figured out you can use rings in battle which is how I finally defeated her.

I'll be honest, I got two big hits in a row from Zylo in that battle. If that wouldn't have happened, I would have wiped. I can assure you that Barkley is the toughest in the game. The adds get tougher, but with some good tactics, you should be able to finish.

I may not finish, but I was glad the Community Playthrough allowed me, to revisit and enjoy this Gem of a game.

I wish I would have thought of this before the recording but I hate the item system.  Why doesn't it default to the next person with open space when you pick up an item!  Now I have to rearrange everything...again!

Absolutely, it's not about finishing every month, just playing some games together and having great discussions about them. Thanks for playing and congrats to you and shaggy on your prizes. ;D

Ok, I'm in the battle in the castle that got raised out of the sea.  I can't take it any more!  I am constantly getting killed because the Chimeras and Blue Dragons almost always evade.  Annoying.  Rage quit!

It took me a little longer than it should have but I finally achieved this today:

Spoiler (hover to show)

Just want to say thanks again to the collective powers that be for picking this game. I have always liked this series (Shining Force III throws me off with the 3D a little) and would love to have the "committee" choose another Shining Force sometime in the future.

I remember when I first played this game as a kid. I had made it maybe only halfway before discovering Shining Force II had recently came out at the time. I instantly moved on to SFII, and remember liking it as much as the first if not more. I never finished either game. Until today.  ;D

Oh yea, I definitely enjoyed it.  I've played the Sega CD version.  A lot of the frustrations are ironed out in future versions.

Thinking of playing Shining Force CD soon, as it follows the events of Shining Force somewhat (some of the same characters) whereas, Shining Force II is unrelated to the first game.
