I've never been very good at Mario games so this should be fun.

By the way, that was sincere. I'm looking forward to this.

I just recently played through SMB 3 with a friend, and it was the most fun I've had playing a game in a long time.  I look forward to doing it again in SMW.

I'm in!  I never need prodding to play SMB 3.  And I just got a copy of SMB 4: Super Mario World from Senseiman, so I'me excited to start that up, as well.

Since we have a few weeks before this starts, I have a question I want to farm out to the community:

Would you rather play the games concurrently or play through SMB3 first and then SMW or maybe even the other way around?

Probably rather play SMB3 first and then SMW. Maybe about a week and a half for the first game and the rest of the month for the latter, since it is longer. Just a thought, and I know I'll have to play them earlier anyway, so more interested in the community opinion.

Put me down let's do it!! I'd rather play them one at a time, don't care which one is first. This is going to be a good month for me to jump back into the playthroughs.

Not too bothered but SMB3 first sounds good.

I'm in like Flynn. I think SMB3 first and then SMW would be good. If they're played jointly it might muddle up the discussion.

I'm going to try and play through all of world 7 of SMB3. Don't think I've done that before. My dad might have when I was a kid, I know we tried at least.

SMB3 is a game I play regularly and have many many hours into, excited to play it some more!

Looks like we'll have some great participation for this one, as was the goal.

I've been checking out both games as well as a few others from the franchise and will have checkpoints up by this weekend, but honestly I'm not expecting anyone to sweat the checkpoints. Far be it from me to tell anyone to stop playing one of these games. I just ask that we hold discussion of World off until 3 is finished so both games get the spotlight. So yeah, we will be playing and discussing SMB3 for about the first two weeks and then going on to SMW.

Thank you everyone who has signed up. Looking forward to kicking off the new year with one of our best plathroughs ever!

Alright, who's going 100% on SMW with me?

I'm currently playing this with a friend right now, and we're gonna go for it.  Despite having this game as a kid and playing it a ton, I've never beaten it before.  I guess it's about time I cross this one off the list.

Count me in for both of these. I can run through SMW in about 3 hours with how many times I have completed it in the past, but I have never gotten past world 6 in SM3, so it will be fun to document that trip with you guys. I have my SNES already set up, so joining this one will take little effort on my part.

First checkpoint is up! Enjoy SMB3! I am embarrassingly bad at it. I made the mistake of just having played Super Mario 3D land and I think the difference in the physics is really messing me up. I'm at world two but I may just start the game over.

So, I started playing SMB3 and the game screwed up.  It had lines going across the screen after I got to level 1-2.  Dang NES systems.  Anyways, I stuck with it and got 2 of the warp whistles.  Well, I forgot you had to go to World 2 and than warp in order to get to 8 so I warped to 4 and figured I would warp once I got to World 5 to go to 8.  Well, you can't do that.  You can only pick level 5, 6, or 7 when you use the warp whistle on world 5.  So I ended up getting to level 7-4.  Will attempt again later.

What do you guys think about Mario's flower power character?  He's all orange when he gets the flower in this version.  I don't think I like it too much but other features of the game I like including the giants levels, tanooki suit, frog suit, hammer brothers suit, and the SHOE!!!

I love the raccoon tail and tanooki suit. I never noticed that he's all orange when flowered up. That's funny!

Is the thing that turns you into a statue still considered to be the rarest power-up in the Mario universe?

Beat SMB3.  I recorded a playthrough of this game, but for some reason my capture screwed up, so I'm missing pretty much all of World 8.  I'm still going to upload it to our Youtube channel anyway.

Edit:  or maybe I'll just use a Game Genie to start at World 8, record it, and append it to the first video.  I'd much rather the video show the entire game, even if I have to cheat a bit to make it happen.

Well, I got to the mid castle in level 8.  I had super trouble with Level 8-1.  I found out for level 8-1 is to use Raccoon Mario to fly through a portion of the level. Level 8-2 has a nice shortcut to get to the end quickly.

I finished last night after having left the console on from the night before. Played straight through and beat every level but one, not even a hard one, just one I skipped for a bit and forgot to go back to.

When I have more time I'll talk about it more, took some pictures too.

Glad to hear that everyone's enjoying themselves. I missed out on a lot of Mario games because I had a Genesis, and this plays very differently than the Sonic games I'm used to.

Rich and I talked a little bit about the game looking yellow-ish - like it had a filter on it. Looks fine to me. Anyone else noticing this?

Emulator-wise, where these were captured, it's not as apparent, but take a look at the sprite and you'll notice the yellow tint. It's worse on newer televisions that have problems with progressive scan.

The colors are definitely less colorful and vibrant than they were in the earlier games. It seems that they choose to use more "earthtoned" and pastel colors for SMB3. They return to using brighter colors in SMW.

I never really was before, and apparently still am not a fan either. Smb3 has too many "on rails" or slow scrolling areas. It slows the game down to a pace that isnt the one i usually play at.

I currently made it to halfway through world 3 before saying "screw it" for the night. I may or may not go back to it, although im totally looking forward to SMW.

I don't think putting up pics from an emulator is fair, as least not the time I saw it being played recently. A few weeks ago I was watching Twitch and someone was streaming SMB3, he was new to it and I walked him through some tricky parts and secrets. At one point early on I told him the colors didn't look right and he said he was using an emulator. Ah! An emulator! I was kinda bummed to find out that they aren't perfect. All those people without actual hardware are missing out on what it was actually like.

Jumped into this for a little bit this evening. Brought back a lot of memories. SMB3 is one of the first three games I have any memory of watching as a young child. World 2 was so frustrating for my cousin, and I still remember how excited she was when she saw the overworld map for world 3 for the first time.

It's like music, I own some albums in digital form and on Vinyl, but the experience just seems so much better to listen to it on a record player.

Just playing the games here and there and just enjoying them, won't be finishing them but having a good time trying.  8)

Hi! Sorry I'm a little late posting.  As I've recently decided to quit WoW I have tons of free time on my hands and I've been looking for an outlet to play some more games. I'll participate in this months playthrough! I played it for a couple hours last night and ended up on World 6. It's been a very long time since I haven't warped whistled through everything and just beat it in an hour. It's fun going back and jumping around in that green boot.

And THIS is the spirit of the playthroughs. We honestly don't care what form any of you play games on. We just love members coming together as a community to play and discuss these great games. The emulator discussion was basically brought up as a means to compare the colors in SMB3.

With all this talk about colors and emulators, I just realized that I probably haven't played SMB on NES since 1993. It's been Super Mario All-Stars or bust since then.

Maybe it's because of the superior hardware, but I never noticed any yellow-ish coloring on the SNES. Now I'm wondering what (if any) other gameplay differences there are. Speed? Sprite size compared to level objects? Hit and hurt box sizes?

I have wondered for so long how people are able to do so with every system they do. I have learned how easy it is on the XBone, but older systems and especially 3/DS streaming amaze me.

Maybe I am jumping ahead by posting about the whole game, though if you aren't already spoiled on SMB3 I can't help you. (actually I can, talk to me ;))

SMB3 was a game my family got brand new, pretty much as soon as it was available at a Toys R Us. I still have it, all nice and CIB and everything. Seems like when the game was released it was advertised at $70, I think we got it for $60 though, or maybe it was 60 and 50, can't remember for sure. Anyways I was always amazed my dad was excited to get it at that price. My dad was not a big spender. As kids we played the NES and loved it, but my dad was always better than us, at least for the first couple years. We would ask him to play so we could watch him, keep in mind I wasn't a little kid, my dad was just good.

Our Nintendo Power subscription yielded this:

It is worn because of the love we put into this game, not because we were careless with it.

Often I, or one of my younger siblings, would sit and guide my dad through levels, just like we did with Metroid. Sometimes he would get us to a particular point and let us take over, not that we couldn't have gotten to whatever point ourselves, it was just quicker to let dad do it.

When I went to go sit down to play SMB3 for the playthrough, I started looking for the cart. It wasn't sitting next to the NES like it normally is (because I play it often) so I looked in the main NES cabinet. Not there either. Where was it when I finally found it? In the NES of course. It still gets played a bit  :D

While I think I've watched and helped my dad play through every level (two and a half decades ago) I don't think I've done it myself before. I tend to stick to certain parts of the game. For the playthrough though, I wanted to do it all.

Along the way I found this guy:

Afterwards, I went back to get one of these:

Wife took a picture of that five-year-old that is here a lot, watching me play. Notice the MLP figures:

I've always liked making Mario say "HELP"

Though I took pictures of my wholly filled item inventory, I figured this post only needed so many images. One way to get it full is to find one of these (every 80,000 points(?)):

There are only 8 patterns to this game. At one point I had this chart memorized. If you choose the left card in the center row first, you can easily figure out the rest of it with no mistakes. Pretty quickly I had to start burning off powerups I didn't need. Music boxes, warp whistles, and those cloud-skip-level things all had to go. Mushrooms and starmans were used often. By the end of the game my inventory was filled with p-wings, hammer suits, tanooki suits, leafs and fire flowers. More fire flowers than I wanted actually, I like leafs better.

This image took some work to put together, not sure why I bothered :P   I beat pretty much every level, except 6-5. I kept messing up on it for some reason, decided to come back to it (since you can go around it) and never did. I might go back and finish it this weekend.

The image isn't perfect, you'll have to believe me I finished the castles/airships   ::)    and I didn't get pictures of every part of the map.

If you wanted to see the sort of thing that guide from the first picture shows you, here is a random image from it:

World eight I had to leave for the second day. I did 1-7 one evening, bedtime occurred, and I left the NES on 'till the next evening. Believe me, I was having so much fun, it was nipp'n at me all night.

I played world eight pretty straight, didn't shortcut much. Not even that ship level you can swim under. I did use one of my P-wings on the airship level after a few tries.

Bowsers Castle I enjoy. I like how it's different than the rest of the game in some ways. It's not particularly hard, but it is interesting. It actually took me several attempts that night. I think it was my sore thumb, lately Steam has been making me use a mouse/keyboard and all. I must be getting soft.

I like the cards they show at the end, bowsers fireballs are pretty neat looking, in the game I mean:

I might go back and do a few more things, get a white mushroom house and finish level 6-5. No one has said they've played as Luigi yet....

Also, I wonder, if you make a pun about a rare item, do you point it out? Or just leave it hangin?

Reading over that was like reading a new language for the first time. Ha ha I am sure it will be easy once I have learned it and practiced the setup a few times, but it still seems complicated to me. It can't be that bad though...what, with every second grader proficient in understanding how to stream to twitch. :)

Loving that guide, brings back a lot of memories! Myself, I had some difficulty in the last zone. I kept running out of lives and having to continue, and when it warped me back to the beginning of the stage, I'd get sucked into the hand gauntlet again, ugh. You'd think after beating such tough games lately like Bucky O'Hare and Splatterhouse 2 I'd walk through this, but my muscle memory is failing me. I'll polish it off tonight hopefully and get cracking on SWM

I decided to record my run of SMB3.  I'm not an expert, so it's not the prettiest run out there.  I take quite a few deaths here and there, but I still had fun recording this.  I hope you guys enjoy it.

Got to world 6 tonight and things slowed WAY down for me. Two hours of play tonight, and an hour of it was in world 6. Things I noticed though were that the mechanics of this game threw me off...It has been about 20 years since I last played this one. The dash mechanics, inability to grab shells and carry them with me, and short invincibility time after being struck all took some serious adjusting after being used to the newer Mario titles.

It is strange that I am going through it as quickly as I am; I really need to calm down though and be more patient with the second half of the game so I stop dying so frequently. 6-5 was an awesome stage, and I actually like that I ran out of time before I found the exit the first time playing it.

Speaking of rushing, does anyone play with the turbo button down the entire time? I don't know when I started doing this, but I do it with every Mario game.

I've yet to lose a life, which is much better than last time I played.

I hold the turbo button down all the time. If I get to a rare spot that I'm not doing that and at 'normal' speed, it actually throws off my jumps and timing a little bit.

Same here.

FYI, you can grab shells and carry them with you in SMB3.  You just can't kick them straight up into the air like you can in SMW.

Just keep bouncing the d-pad from left to right in mid air, because you never let off the run button.

See, that is what I thought as well because it lets me when I play stages in Super Mario Maker that were made with the SMB3 buildset, but it won't let me when I play SMB3 on the Wii through Super Mario All-Stars. I can pick up the blue-flashy blocks and carry them, though.

Hmmm, that's weird.  I know for a fact that you can do it on the original NES and SNES versions.  I don't know why it would be any different on the Wii, but I don't have that version and can't test it myself ???

I went back and played some more and it was still doing it, but then I missed my first attempt at grabbing a shell and when I ran into it as opposed to landing on it a second time while holding the dash button, it worked. I am clearly just seriously used to grabbing it while falling on it instead of picking them up on the run. I never do it that way.

Cool, I will have my videos up on Youtube soon, I am on World 7 right now ( using my NES ) I have just left it on like its 1990 al over again.  Also as for my streaming setup, its going to be overly complicated, just because I want to play on a CRT, upscale them to 720p (soon), record them, and play back on an HDTV... like I said overly complicated.  I wish I had the money to stream 3/DS games but the system is about 500 with the video out mod.

I played through the game two times this weekend. Just as Duke said it is amazing how much of this game comes back to you.

The Famicom version is a little harder as one hit will make you small.

The first time was on the Famicom:

The second time was on the SNES (All-Stars):

I'm ready for World.

I've beat SMW so many times I try to do stunts and stuff when I run through now :P Looking forward to playing 3 on the original hardware for the first time in a good while.

Worlds 6 and 7 were ones I've normally skipped when playing. Doing this playthrough though has made me realize they aren't that bad.

I played through SMB3 again, finished yesterday, after leaving the NES on for a few days waiting for me to carry on after leaving off in world 5. Last playthrough I did every level but one, this time I finished them all. I think from now on when playing I'm going to play more of the game rather than warping past spots.

Played as Luigi this time:

Made another map, notice all the "L" markers:

The Mario one I posted earlier for reference:

I need to hurry on to SMW now before my interest in platformers wears off. I have a tough time getting into platformers I didn't play as a kid. SMW I've tried to play many times but quickly give up on. I'm going to try for you guys though!

This was actually taken about 3 weeks ago, so it's probably about time I posted it.  Yes, that's Luigi in the picture.  My co-op partner was the one who actually beat the game.

Also, is it just me or do these two songs sound kinda similar?  (just listen to the first 10 seconds of each)

Hey, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for an amazing kickoff to 2016 with this playthrough.

We have amazing stuff coming this year, so make sure to keep up with the sub-forum here and don't be afraid to try games that might be out of you comfort zone...like Folklore! I'll see you there!

Here's a really interesting video about religious references in Mario games from DYK. Enjoy!

Well damn...I lost track of the last week or so, but at least I spent a good bit of time with games instead of just work and family. I have spent today playing SMW and my son is enjoying watching every minute of it. I blasted through from the forest to the end of the game to the final 8 bonus stages. I never did complete SMW though...still sitting on the doorstep of world 7 as of this post.

Hey - it's still January, who is tackling this?

Ha! What a strange, roundabout way to play SMB3. Though I guess if you played the GBA port as a youngster and want the same exact feel, then it's here for you.

More so than this, the 38 e-reader levels (including the JP exclusive ones) are all there. It's like a New Game +

Really worth the $7.99 imo.
