Welcome to Earf?

Has more to do with something in the name of the location than the actual location.

Actually, you just press Left on Charlie, and he's there.

Yep! Mega Man is left of Charlie, and to select B.B. Hood, move right once after Simone. According to the page I'm looking at, you can also select an alternate costume for Cammy by pressing up or down while she's highlighted on the Character Select screen. I haven't tried it myself yet, though. You also unlock a gallery, once you beat the game w/ any character.

Is this only available on Dreamcast or emulation? Looks interesting, but I don't emulate, and the Dreamcast edition is cost prohibitive.

There's this cheaper option though not sure how you'd feel about it.

Played the game twice this morning on 'child' difficulty, once with Simone and once with Arthur. I like it a lot, though I'd give my left huevo for this to be twin sticks or do have a dodge button.

Looking forward to a few more runs through as the month goes on. I love the fun and flashiness of this era of the Dreamcast.

I haven't been able to make it out of 1-3 on a single credit yet, but with credit feeding, I can make it to 1-6 on the Normal difficulty. I may try a lower difficulty at some point, just to see if I can get a little further. As with most Psikyo shooters, the stage order is random for the first few, so that helps mix it up. It also means sometimes you get luck of the draw, in terms of which levels and bosses you face at a lower power level. It's been years since I picked this up, but it feels good to already be able to get further on a single credit, as well as credit feeding, than I remember being able to do before. One thing I have to hand to Psikyo is that they found a way to incorporate their fast bullet patterns into a game that's not strictly a shmup, in the broad sense, and it works here. Someone on my stream last night commented that the game also bears a resemblance to their earlier multi-directional shooter Zero Gunner, which is a good comparison point.

Arthur is my chosen character right now - he's "easy mode" in a sense, because his light melee attack is enough to decimate most small-medium enemies in one hit (or one hit combined with some standard shots), and both his heavy shot and heavy melee attack can drain boss energy pretty fast, allowing  you to make quick work of them. I also like Cammy - her double guns give you more coverage, and do more damage faster than most other characters, and her ability to combo with her light melee attack into her Spiral Arrow move is good for breaking up a small group of enemies, or dealing heavy damage to one. B.B. Hood's attacks are fun to use, but her heavy shot is slow to deploy, and has limited range. Charlie seems kinda weak, overall. I liked Simone well enough, and Shiba is kinda fun to use. Mega Man I like, but he feels a bit weaker than he should be. But his Mega Buster heavy shot is good, as is his heavy melee attack, which is a short-range tornado. Makes me wonder if Tornado Man, from MM9, was somehow influenced by this move.

Still rocking Arthur, and made a little progress this evening. Made it to 1-4 a few times, and even 1-5 once. Some of the small enemies start shooting bullet spreads by that point on Normal, so it becomes a lot more of a dodging exercise. Both the heavy attacks have a lot of recovery time for Arthur. Not sure yet how it compares to the other characters, but you really have to be aware of your surroundings, and pointed in the right direction, so those attacks actually do what you intend, and so you don't leave yourself wide open to take damage.

Dont forget to add me to the list, I'm still working on breaking 10k before posting a score

I'm slowly making progress. I managed to make it to 1-5, and even 1-6 on a single credit this evening, and with multiple credits, as far as 1-9 on Normal. I've switched to Mega Man. He's powerful enough to take out some enemies with his heavy shot, his close-range heavy melee attack is good, and he's got enough speed and quick enough recovery to be a pretty good balance. Got my best score so far tonight, as well.

Something to keep in mind - with each characters "S" or special attack, try it out, and make sure you know what it is, before you start trying to use it. You're invincible for the duration, but you may end up being vulnerable immediately after use. Mega Man's attack is great if he's right in front of a target, and can deal good damage, but you have to be cognizant of the timing, otherwise, you can jump out of that attack, with no i-frames, and directly into an enemy or boss attack.

Well my score is crappy but still the best I've done.  I think I need to not continue as much

I credit feed to practice levels, but also do single-credit runs to see how far I can get, and how high a score I can achieve.

I may do some credit feeding after I can get by stage 5. I did about 12-15 runs and hit stage 5 3 times at least so I feel pretty good about that. Unfortunately it is still random at that point so I've faced a different challenge each time.

Of course this stage 5 boss had two forms, I was so stoked for a second...

While this game is definitely hard and can slay you if you look away for more than a second, I think patient play and actually dodging the patterns from a distance and playing safe during as much of the boss fights as possible is key. It is just so easy to take one hit then rush in cause your on tilt that you just got clocked for 4 bars of health and you want to get things over with.

Not the same run but I imagine a similar score dying on the same stage.

Surprisingly was able to find a little bit of success with BB Hood and make it into stage 5 with her. She definitely plays a much more hit and run game than the others in order to be effectice in my experience anyway.

Yeah, I can reach 1-5 or 1-6 on Normal, but getting beyond that point is quite difficult. I decided to try easier difficulties last night, and ended up getting pretty far on Very Easy, and I was able to reach the final boss twice on Child difficulty. I don't think it will take me long to beat it on that setting.

I managed to get my clear on Child difficulty! And I can reach 1-9 on Very Easy now, but haven't quite managed to get past the 2nd phase of Beauty Cat Lady quite yet. That's a hard fight! True to form, the game is pretty difficult, even on the lower difficulty levels. But with a single credit clear on Child, and getting close on Very Easy, I think it's going to be doable.

Now I've cleared the game on Very Easy, again with Mega Man, on a single credit. I also cleared it twice last night on stream, with a couple other characters, Arthur and B.B. Hood, on Baby difficulty, just to check out their endings. I might do the same for the rest of the characters by the end of the month, so I can talk about them all.

Very nice! I assume you're emulating Dreamcast on PC, or are you actually playing the NAOMI arcade version on PC?

I've now managed to 1CC the game on "Baby" difficulty with all but Cammy and Shiba, and I got really close with both. Hoping to clean that up this evening, if I can.

I've now managed to clear the game with all characters on "Baby" difficulty, except Mega Man. That felt redundant, since I've already done so on "Child" and "Very Easy" difficulty. There's apparently an alternate version of Cammy you can get by holding either up or down when she's highlighted on the character select screen, but I haven't tested that yet. My hunch is that it's just a palette swap, but I'll need to verify that.

So June is ending soon and here are my thoughts: Cannon spike is great fun, i am very happy i learned through your playthrough about it. For myself i took it not very seriously and just played it to have fun i only had one clear with arthur on child difficulty. Normally i play with an arcadestcick but after playing this one time, i got me the retrobit bluetooth saturn and megadrive pad. its somehow more comfortable to play with pads.
Cannon spike is Fun but I see the potential to take it very serious and go on a scorehunt.
BTW: Played it through emulation on PC
