Well I know my guess is wrong, but its NFS Shift.  Or James Bond 007 racing both shifting and under cover

I have the Gears of war ultimate edition/rare replay compilation on Xbox One, is that GoW a remake of the original?

Same game, better graphics and a few small QoL enhancements.

For a change, I might actually have enough time/familiarity with a playcast game to participate xD

For anyone just wanting to get through this one, just set it to easy/normal. It's a pretty quick playthrough on its own. HIGHLY suggest finding a buddy and playing through together if you can. ..it's much more enjoyable as a co-op experience.

I'm in on this one. I vaguely remember playing this on co-op with a buddy of mine when it first came out.

I'm tentatively in for this. I've had all of the 360 Gears games for a while now, but just haven't played them. This is a good excuse to at least dip my toe into the proverbial waters.

I've been wanting to try out this series for a while, seems like a good time to do it.

So I've actually already beaten the game. As Neo mentioned earlier, the campaign can be beaten fairly quickly. I'll post my thoughts on it as the playthrough progresses to avoid spoilers for those who have never played. Since I have the whole month I may try to do what I did with Fable and play all of the games.

Well, I had an hour and a half before work this morning so I was going to start this game.  The system had an update and the game had an update.  Needless to say, I had to start work and it still wasn't finished.  I hate modern gaming.  I just want to play my game.

As of this morning I have finished the first three games along with the prequel Gears of War Judgment. I just started the fourth game this morning and shouldn’t have any trouble beating them all before the months end. I won’t go into to much detail right now but it’s been really interesting playing through all these games to see how the story and the games themselves have progressed with each title.

I started this last night on the Xbox One and boy, this game is gorgeous!  I like how frequent the checkpoints are seeing I have to kids that need to go to bed before I can play and I don't have much time on my hands.

I'm really digging this game.  That Berserker part was hard but I appear to be stuck in Act II, Chapter 2.  I think there is a door I need to go through but I don't get prompted for a button push and pushing any of the buttons don't do anything.

Are you playing the ultimate edition? I had a similar issue in a later chapter where the map failed to load through a door I had to go through. This may not be the answer you want but I found that restarting the chapter fixed the issue.

Yeah, the Ultimate Edition.  I tried again and the X button didn't show up to open the door.  I loaded the last checkpoint and it showed up and I was able to go through the door after that.  Some weird glitch.  I'm at nightfall now and need to shoot the propane tanks to get to the gas station to pick up the truck.  I'm liking this game.  One thing I don't like is when you hit the d-pad to pick your weapon it doesn't show the name of the weapon so I don't know which weapon I'm picking.

I just did the vehicle sequence right after where you are, Shaggy.

Stubbes playing the whole series like a damn beast! Making me feel like a slacker only being in Act 2.

I'm enjoying the game and I also appreciate the liberal checkpoints, though that fuels my laziness and sometimes I only play for like twenty minutes. Not the game's fault, totally mine and the lack of focus these days.

I think the voice acting is really stiff and hasn't aged well, but the graphics on the Ultimate Edition look great.

Glad you guys are enjoying it too.

Made it to Act III, in the mines right now.  I love the mine car sequence.  Different and fun.  I can't put this game down.  I have to force myself to quit.

I like how your character "lumbers" when moving instead of being smooth.  It makes me feel immersed because Fenix has on heavy armor so his movement would be lumbered. The AI isn't bad, when it works. There are a lot of times I tell the group to regroup and I get a Negative comment and no reason why they can't move.  I go to where they are at and they are just standing there or crouched behind a wall.  One time I ended up going on ahead without the character, that was just standing there, to get the character back when the next checkpoint was hit.

I can definitely agree that the voice acting is a bit lack luster, but compared to the Gears of War, the ultimate edition looks and sounds so much better. Also since we're talking about the voice acting, I just want to say that it took me 6 games to realize Marcus Fenix is voiced by John DiMaggio. While it will never happen, I would love for the Marcus charter to just one time tell someone to "Bite his shinny metal ass".

As far as progress goes, I beat the forth game the other night and I'm already about half way through the fifth game. I only every played the original trilogy, so its been nice just to continue the story and seeing where it takes me.

Well, I got to Act V last night and got to the theater and couldn't figure out how to shoot the theater wall down to kill the Seeder so I figured I would quit for the night.  I booted up my Xbox One to continue playing this morning and the game wouldn't start.  I restarted the console and the game started but now I was back at Act IV!  I wasn't happy.  I got back to just outside the theater so I'm still behind where I was last night but at least I'm back to Act V. :(

Dude, I had a similar issue last night!

I was at the section in the house, trying to find the secret lab, and was stuck in a small room, able to do nothing. I reverted to the last checkpoint and it still wasn't working so I closed the game and rebooted the system and it kicked me all the way back to before I got into the house.

What gives, man?!?

I like how the Xbox One (not sure about the 360) has little details that just ass to the atmosphere of the guy such as when rockets are shot, you can't see the thing that shot them because of the smoke of the rocket or when the huge monster/alien (Bromak, I think) is on the street above you and when it walks dost comes trickling down where it steps.  I love these little things.  Not needed but definitely adds to the game.

Just beat the game.

I love all the Gears games and the Ultimate Edition is the only one I hadn't played so far. I had a mostly good time, but the lack of fit and finish was crazy for one of Microsoft's flagship franchises.

There wasn't very much time during my playthrough where Dom wasn't either in my way or running around like an idiot. You would think they would have programmed better friendly a.i. in a remake like this, but c'est la vie.

Hope y'all have a great weekend blasting away. I'm moving on to Fatal Frame II.

Ok, I'm on the train fighting what I believe is the end boss and I don't know how to beat him.  I get him to the point where the Kryll come from behind and I keep getting killed by them.  I thought maybe the person in the Helicopter would be shining a light for me to go in and I like up and the guy in the helicopter isn't.  I run to the other end of the train and sit the brightest spot and i still die.  I run around the whole train thinking I have to upload the data first and no luck.  How do I defeat the end guy?  I must have tried 50 times.  I don't know where to go when the Kryll come.

That's a pain. You must not be playing on easy. I was far away and in cover when the kryll swarmed in and they didn't kill me, but that may just be from playing on easy.

You do not have to do any tasks, only kill Rizz, so just focus on that. Maybe watch a youtube walkthrough for the difficulty level you're on?

I'm on the second difficulty (normal or casual?).  I didn't want to use a guide, trying to drum up some community conversation and old school playground talk. :)

Anyways, I think I figured out the Kryll part:
Spoiler (hover to show)

I still can't kill him, though.  I think being out in the open is what is killing me now.  UGH.  I'f unloaded a full Lancer and some Sniper Rifles into him and he still doesn't go down.  How long does it take?!

Drop the Longshot and grab the Torque Bow and extra ammo for it. The explosion will cause the kryll to fly off of Raam leaving him open for damage from the Lancer. If the kryll are on Raam he’s invincible. I played on the normal difficulty and it only took a few minutes with this method.

I ended up finally beating it and with the sniper rifle.  I couldn't go back at all as the doors shut on me so I had to use the sniper.  Liked the ending and the game over all and want to play the 2nd one now.  A few things I didn't like was once you went through a door, the door shut and you couldn't go back through if needed to and the lack of an instructions manual.  When I first got the sniper rifle I figured it's a sniper rifle, it must scope right?  Well, I hit buttons and it didn't scope.  I didn't find out until I was in the theater that pushing the Right stick in accesses the scope and that was on accident.  My thumb slipped and ended up pushing in the Right stick.  I also found out through luck that when you are "attached" behind cover that you can fire grenades and your gun without aiming.  I accidentally shot my weapon without holding the aim button down.  This is another reason why we need manuals especially when the game doesn't tell you how to do these things.

Glad to hear you finally beat Raam. There should have been a Torque Bow in the train car right before you go outside to fight him. I think the reason why you didn’t see it is due to it being in a different place than than the longshot and the lancer that’s appear in the center of the car.

I’m trying to remember if there was a tutorial pop up that explained shooting from cover but I’m not sure, I honestly just remember it being a thing when I played the original on the 360 years ago. If it never does than that doesn’t really surprise me considering this game doesn’t explain a whole lot if you think about it. Looking back at it there really is a lot of information that is missing from the story of the first gears game. From the very beginning you don’t exactly have a full grasp of what is going on. When Marcus shows up on screen you see he’s in jail, but you don’t know why he is there or how long he’s been there. You also don’t know a whole lot about your enemy the locust horde. Except that they are a race of underground creatures that rose up during E day and started attacking everyone. When I first played this game many years ago I remember wondering why are the locust attacking, why did they come up to the surface, and how long were they down there? With all of these loose ends the story really relies on what’s happening in the moment and the overall goal/mission that Delta Squad is trying to complete.

With all that being said I think it’s the wanting to know what’s going on that drove me to play the first three games way back when, because I wanted to know why these things were happening. Luckily the games that follow fill in a lot of those holes. I’m really glad I decided to play through the current 6 games of the series. It’s really fueled my love for the franchise, and while I’m about halfway through Gears 5, I’m already looking forward to a Gears 6. And would recommend that everyone play the other games as well when you get a chance.

It doesn't appear there are weekly checkpoints/goals to meet, at least not that I found. I had a little time off, so I jumped in on Friday afternoon and evening, and have been playing some today. Just finished Act 4. I'm enjoying it so far, though even on Casual difficulty, there are definitely some "gotcha" moments where you might get mobbed, if you're not expecting it, like that first encounter with the Berserker. I definitely like the wealth of checkpoints, though. Some spots in this game took me numerous tries to get through. the shakiness when you're firing a machine gun makes it hard to aim, and whether you're firing your not, you don't aim very quickly, so when enemies are moving around a lot, it's hard to pin them down. The auto-healing is a great feature, and if the game didn't have that, it would be totally brutal. Despite all the cover available in the game, there are still spots where it's hard not to take damage, like when you're in cover from a bunch of Locusts, but then the Wretches start coming your way. Either you stand up and take a few bullets while popping off Wretches, or you stand up to melee them and take a few bullets. Either way, you're gonna get hit.

Oh, and the Troika gunners can be a real pain.

Honestly that's just kind of how these games are. More often then not your character will have to be a bullet sponge while you take care of enemies. It does get easier to manage though the more you are used to the games because you can get an understanding of how much damage you can take before you get killed/knocked down. Once you get that down you just go back into cover to heal then repeat. I will add that there is definitely some rough edges to the combat in the first game. I always hated shooting at enemies behind cover/troika's because even if you can sight them in and a have a clear shot at them, it rarely hits them. Its almost like being in cover has an invincibility to bullets. You can still use grenades to kill enemies in cover, but if you're using them to close emergence holes you probably don't have any to throw behind cover. Luckily this is improved on in the later games.

The discussion here is amazing, guys. Thank you for all of the input.

I'm sorry about there being no checkpoints. If it helps, there are five acts total and the game is about eight hours long depending on difficulty. Because of the aforementioned nonsensical/confusing story, I don't think there is much to spoil.

One thing that's nice about approaching the Troika gunners is that the game usually gives you a way to get around to the side, and snipe them from behind cover that way, while your partner is taking fire, so that helps. With only 5 acts, it looks like I'm almost done, so I might try and finish this up tonight or tomorrow, and then give my final thoughts.

Okay, so I beat it earlier this evening! I rage quit last night, after 30 or so attempts at the final encounter with Raam. That battle is quite a difficulty spike, after what is mostly a manageable game, with a couple tough spots. Despite watching a Hardcore difficulty video, showing a strategy for the final fight, I couldn't execute it well enough. I'd either get shredded by the Kryll, or cut to ribbons from the Troika he was toting. But after putting a little over an hour into it earlier, I reached the point where I was about to quit again, and on what was to be my final attempt for the evening, I pulled out the win. A solid game with some control quirks, and some minor complaints from me, regarding the combat. Still, I can see what they were going for, and if the combat and control is improved in future games, they're probably well worth playing.

If you have the time, you should definitely consider playing the other gears titles. They aren't huge time sinks, with the campaigns for each only running about 7 - 10 hours each. I'll also add that the controls are definitely better compared to the first game, and in my opinion continually improve as the series progress. Also with each title you learn more and more about the main characters as well as the locust horde and glimpses of what was happening during the Pendulum Wars

I don't have my 360 copy of Gears 2 at my house, is there a physical copy available for the One?

I don't believe so. I'm fairly certain they only redid the first one for the Xbox One. However all of them are on game pass (except gears 5, but that is on Game pass ultimate) if you have access to that.

I see all 3 Gears of War games at pawn shops all the time. I'm sure you could find the others for next to nothing, at this point.

I think I've just became jaded to first person shooters.  They don't hold my attention like other games.  I've got to chapter 3 but it doesn't look like I'll have the time to finish it.  I was looking forward to it too... oo well 😕
