Title: The Ohio River Post by: archetype on July 24, 2006, 07:17:00 PM Thought some of you might be interested to read this. I received it in an email fromt eh Sierra Club in Cincy, OH.
"Sierra Club and Rivers Unlimited are proud to welcome Lynne Cox to Cincinnati! International record-breaking swimmer and internationally acclaimed author, Lynne Cox, will swim the Ohio River at the Serpentine Wall (Sawyer Point) following a speech on the importance of the Clean Water Act. Lynne Cox is flying across the country from Los Angeles to oppose the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation's (ORSANCO) proposal to lower water quality standards for the Ohio River. ORSANCO's proposal increases the legal threshold for the amount of E.coli bacteria to enter the River, the pollutant found in raw sewage. "Having suffered a sewage-induced illness myself, I hope this swim will draw attention to the risks to which ORSANCO's proposal will expose the community," says Lynne. "The people who rely on the Ohio River for drinking water, recreation and their livelihood deserve clean water." Take a look at the attached flyer to view Lynne's incredible accomplishments! Join us Saturday, August 5th and cheer Lynne on as she takes a stand for our Ohio River! I think he might suffer some more sewage induced illness.
Meh, it's not actually THAT bad, I've been swimming in it once. Title: Re: The Ohio River Post by: TraderJake on July 26, 2006, 10:49:31 PM Quote Why: To demonstrate the need to make all of our fishable, swimmable and drinkable! Ha! How many rivers in the US are drinkable? None! In fact, most rivers in the world are not going to be drinkable. Even if the world was without industry and we were in the dark ages the rivers still would not be drinkable or potable. Little does anyone know that Cincinnati has the best water treatment plant in the nation, if not world. It's one of the advantages of having one of the best water resources engineering divisions in the nation at its local university. I don't think the e Coli standards will change. You will need the agreeance of 8 states, and I highly doubt that the EPA will go for it, but if it is still within EPA regulations then there is nothing the EPA can do.
