I'm purchasing a 360 just for halo 3.  I got hooked on the first halo and have been at it ever since.  Not since doom and rott have I been this excited about a single game.

There's plenty more reasons to buy a 360 out there already.

Dead Rising
Oblivion
Gears of War (coming very soon)
Call of Duty 2 and 3 (coming soon)
DOA4
Battle for Middle Earth 2
GRAW

and 2007 is looking exceptional for the system with games like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Lost Planet, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Fable 2, etc.

No.  I am against all FPS games on console.   Mouse and keyboard is flat out heads and tails above the dual joystick method.   Dreamcast came close with having an actualy keyboard and mouse, but you pretty much need a desk too, which most couches don't have.

Tried Halo on the PC, and it isn't even a mediocre FPS.  Unreal Tournament, a very old game, blows it out of the water.  CS:S is absolutely amazing in comparison to Halo.

The FPS experience is simply a matter of personal preference.

I'm .ot into high-end PC games on the whole, and the idea of having to be confined to a desk to play them is a turn off. I do like Pogo, though, for those times when I'm into playing something light. I'll stick with consoles for the rest.

My expectations for Halo 3 keep going up, though, whenever I see something new and impressive coming out on the 360. For example, I'm hoping Gears of War and Call of Duty 3 live up to their hype; and if so, will raise the bar for Halo 3 to meet.

I think they should just combine Halo 3 with CoD 3. I'm tired of shooting Nazi's and I'm tired of shooting aliens, so why not make it interesting? Wouldn't it be awesome to use the M1 Garand to plug Nazi Aliens, and then swap over to the plasma sword to finish the job? Just imagine, Panzers in space!

Truthfully I'm tired of FPS games, Farcry was a nice change in scenery, and if it wasn't for those annoying Trodgent things messing it up that would be my favorite FPS. Instead, I just don't have one.

Tell me about it.  I havn't found a game better than the original Unreal Tournament for multiplayer FPS.  Counter Strike: Source is a great game, but it isn't the fast paced, continuous shoot em up that UT is.   Plus, everyone has it!

Absolutely! However, I do like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark over on N64. Black and Resistance Fall of Man also look good.

Halo is nothing we haven't seen before. It's a mishmash of various FPS games over the year. UT does kick Halo's ass, but I think Duke Nukem 3D totally destroys Halo and every FPS game ever made.

Speaking of DN3D, if you have the game for PC still, download the High Resolution Pack and start playing it again with updated graphics and better models and textures...

Perfect Dark and Goldeneye are both single joystick FPSs, I only dislike the dual joystick FPSs, which is every modern console FPS.
The other large issue I had with console FPSs is the resolution of gameplay.  With Time Splitters 2 it seemed like it was extremely hard to pick out a model from a long distance, whereas on a PC you could do so with great accuracy.   I think this issue is moot now with the current generation of consoles and HDTV capability.

If we're talking FPSs, the PC wins hands down.  My fav is the battlefield series.  I am still playing the mods for 1942 and 2142 is :o.   if I had to pick FPSs for consoles I would go with 007 games, but that is just because I get  :owned: everytime I play Halo 1 or 2.

My only hope is that they fix the balance on multiplayer gameplay.  It also sucks playing Halo 2 online (xbox connect (http://www.xbconnect.com)) and being trash talked by a bunch of 14 year old punks (unlike the kicka** teens that frequent this site).  Hopefully they can make it a bit more than run-n-gun.

I'm glad that they made the Spartans look more like the originals again.

For those who haven't played the first two for more than 10 minutes, I recommend you play the game through before you judge it.  If you play it for just one thing, you'll most likely be sorely dissappointed.  Otherwise, look out for interesting architecture, in-game voice acting, and hippos.  Yes, hippos.  They're on the spent shotgun shell casings.

I used to stay away from the new consoles and the hype, but the Wii and 360 are really pushing my to buy new for some reason.  I guess they still are managing to make somewhat new stuff after all.  At least there likely won't be another game crash any time soon.

that is going to be the biggest thing holding back microsoft and xbox.  xbox live is supposed to be the shining gem of features of the 360, but when i played freakin world championship poker on the original xbox, i got called every name in the book (win or lose).  there is no way that kindof gaming environment will be able to sell to a bigger market than it has now.

Shortly after i first got my Xbox, I traded Halo for Sega GT 2002. Never regretted it either, 'nuff said lol. Of course that doesn't mean I won't give Halo 3 a fair chance, and that Legendary edition kicks ass. I'd buy it, has to be one of the coolest game paraphenilia ideas I've ever seen.

Halo is a really good console first person shooter, but that's like being the smartest kid in the retarded class, or the hottest girl in Wal-mart.

This argument of console vs PC FPS's has been going on for a long time. And it seems that there's no "high ground" for the console players to take. So I'll suggest this motto for console FPS fans when dealing with...let's say...PC FPS "snobs":  "Don't wrestle with pigs. You get dirty and the pigs enjoy it."

Note: This motto can also apply to dealing with fanboys.

Apples and Oranges. UT has never had a signifigant console presence in 8 years regardless of sequels and Halo for the PC isn't what it is on the Xbox.

Title: Re: Halo 3 tidbits
Post by: phoenix1967 on April 11, 2007, 01:21:23 PM
The Unreal Championship games are actually very good, but they're also very hard!

Hopefully UT3 will be better balanced when it comes to consoles this fall.

Looks like Halo 3 took out dual-wielding? Gotta admit those grenades look sweet! Plus having the ability to record a game for pause/playback will be awesome!

I enjoy Liandri Conflict much more than the Halo 1 or 2 on the Xbox. Haven't played UT on the PC for many years. I did enjoy some of the mods like Thievery and RocketArena.

I'm probably one of the last few who just tried Halo a week ago.  As a matter of fact, I hadn't even touched an Xbox controller until two weeks ago when I scored one at the local pawn shop.  I'm loving it so far, can't wait to try Halo 2, and eventually 3.  I watched the developer interview, and they are right when they say its 30 seconds of fun repeated over and over again.  Me <3 the Warthog.

You know you may be onto something. They could even make it a dual function bookend and maybe make video games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_games) for it as well.

Feel free to email that wiki article to Sony so they have something to go on.  ;)

Don't forget that if its an upright type deal, it needs a blue stand (http://www.rfgeneration.com/PHP/gethwinfo.php?ID=U-072-H-00170-A&) also.

But first... isn't cramming running electronics on tight bookshelves generally a bad idea.  It would be poorly conductive to airflow and may lead to overheating.  Of course, for some of these newer consoles, overheating is a big concern already.

The Halo 3 Beta is sweet!

It's definitely going to be an adjustment regarding the 'X' button, though. Most of the X button actions that were used in Halo 2 are now relegated to the right and left bumpers.

The X is now used for equipment drops. And with the equipment they've put into the game it adds a LOT of new strategies.

No sword in the Beta levels I played, though...hmmm.

I have never heard of Daikatana. Hype is called advertising. What do you think it will be like when GTA4 in released? THE SAME FUCKING WAY!. It has nothing to do with Microsoft. It is like any major movie, book or game release. HYPE SELLS! So stop talking about who is blowing who. Phoenix go play your Xbox 360, Tondog you go play your roommates PS3 and be happy in your fanboy land. I understand Halo is not the best FPS of all time. Lots of CONSOLE gamers do notice the key word CONSOLE. For the Xbox haters or PC lovers that disagree that is fine but GET OVER IT.

As far as that link goes Master Chief looks lame and the gun looks completely stupid.

I wish the school year wasn't over so I could still mooch off my roomate for PS3 action. :(

Sorry for being somewhat an ass. It's just that Halo gets me all riled up because of the massive amount of crazy fandom around it and how the game sells millions upon millions of copies while original concepts like Okami make the developers shut down.

I hate over hype things as well and I agree with you about Okami but Halo type games are hat people want. If everyone stopped buying FPS's do you really think companies would still be making them? Halo revolutionized the way FPS's where played on a CONSOLE (again key word) online. Sure you can say Sega had Quake 3 on the DC but that was so new back then not many people played it.

I hate all the hype around GTA games each time they are released but I don't go around telling people to eat cock. Just play nice. Little jabs in fun are funny. Being mean is not. You know I poke fun of you all the time Tondog and you do teh same to me but it is all in fun no blow jobs involved. So please Phoenix, Tondog and Leon is ignore each other posts if it has to do with the PS3 or Xbox.

I see your point on Okami. That's on Capcom, though. They should've kept that studio open. All they had to do was release another version of Street Fighter 2 to help pay for it...maybe add Amaterasu as a playable character? Suddenly I see Amaterasu peeing on Ken and Ryu...

Getting back on topic, I took Tynstar's advice and went back to playing my 360. I'm loving the new feature in H3 to be able to save and playback your multiplayer games. Wow! A great way to learn how to overcome one's noob-ness.

Yeah. I know what you're saying there. It really did change how FPS games were done on consoles and pretty much made the dual analog movement control scheme the norm for console FPS games. But of course, it didn't show people that FPS games could be done on consoles. I give that honor to either Perfect Dark or Goldeneye.

All they had to do was release another version of Street Fighter 2 to help pay for it...maybe add Amaterasu as a playable character? Suddenly I see Amaterasu peeing on Ken and Ryu...
Or how about another Resident Evil remake? That would work as well. And, Amaterasu doing his duty on Ken and Ryu would be the most incredible thing ever.

LOL Zune. Looks good and all, but it's the freakin Zune. I wouldn't touch one of those with a 50 foot pole because it would probably infect me with DRM and I would only be able to repeat myself 3 times in 3 days. I apologize for the terrible joke.

However, I do really like how that Halo 3 edition looks.

ROFL.

Way to go Circuit City! Milk those hardcore fans dry by not offering it with the Legendary (priced) edition. Now the hardcore Haloers will have to buy one of the other editions in addition to the Legendary (priced) edition in order to get that wall graphic they oh so much want.

Title: Re: Halo 3 tidbits

I can see where they'd eventually get them if they were a collector (after significant price drops). But to pay full price for 3 versions of the same game, twice (as Tondog indicated) would be insane!

Doing the math, that would be $130 x 2 for Legendary, $70 x 2 for Limited Edition, and $60 x  2 for regular. $520 for the same game!

Title: Re: Halo 3 tidbits

I've known people to buy an extra Xbox and some doubles on games for LAN play.  Of course, the only way to reasonably do this would be to buy used.

Hey, some people are that insane. I'm probably only describing about 1% or 2% of the Halo fan population, however. I at least hope some people have more sense than to buy all three editions.

I'd agree that 1%-2% would probably buy multiple copies in some combination. But my guess would be that 1 in a thousand (or less) would be as insane (not to mention as rich) as you describe.

Here's my summary of the Halo 3 Beta. First, general impressions. Second, map review. Third, Weapons review.

General Impressions:

I thought that graphically, they definitely did an excellent job with lighting, shadows, and the finer details that really make the environments and maps outstanding to participate in. The only disappointment was that it seemed that the character models were a little too similar to their Halo 2 counterparts.

Soundwise, they're solid. Weapon and equipment pickups all have their own unique sounds and when you hear certain weapons being fired from a distance, you can get a pretty good idea of what you're going to have to deal with. And speaking of sound from a distance, they seem to have nailed sound fading very well relative to the players position on the map.

Gameplay-wise, the controls are very tight and I'd have a hard time believing they'd need any tweaking at all. The main difference from Halo 2 that will take some getting used to is how the left and right bumpers in Halo 3 are now used for weapon pick-ups and reloading, and the X button is solely used for utilizing equipment. At least in the Beta this worked well, but I'm hoping that in the final product the X button will have more applications.

Map review:

Valhalla - I only played this map maybe 5 or 6 times, but I can say that it's incredibly well balanced and makes an excellent large map for team battles and Crazy King. It reminds me of Coagulation a lot (not appearance-wise) because of the bases on the 2 ends and the means of traversing large distances quickly (Coagulation had teleporters, Valhalla has "mancannon"s). There's a lot of hiding places to be found on the map along the side walls (good for you snipers...den) and weapon balance was fair, but sparsely distributed. It seems like if you get the banshee (team games only had this available at the time) you could get a decided advantage since there were no ghosts available to counteract their advantage from the skies.

Snowbound - Initially I didn't like this map, but after awhile found it to be very intriguing. The map is a small-to-midsize map (like Beaver Creek in Halo 2), but with a lot of underground tunnels and passageways from base to base. The interesting thing about it was that every "door" into the bases and out was a forcefield that you couldn't shoot into or out of. The only vehicle on the map was a ghost, which seemed to be balanced by the fact that if you're the one in the ghost you're the most likely to be the target of whomever is in the game. Lots of interesting tricks and positioning to be had on this one. The most interesting of which is that the guardians surround the perimeter of the map (represented by unmannable turrets). Which means that if you venture too far out beyond them, the "guardians" will shoot you down. Plenty of exploding barrels will also make this a challenge when players start getting into the intricacies of the map.

High Ground - This map is by far the most complex. A large outdoor map (not quite the size of Valhalla), somewhat comparable to Zanzibar in size but not at all in function. The vehicles on the map in the beta were somewhat useless. The Mongoose is basically a 1 or 2 person ATV with no weapons capability; however the passenger can fire, but that's a moot point in a game of Slayer. The lower end of the map is near the shore, and has some of the better weapon pickups along the way (especially a really nasty hiding spot for sniping...den), but the higher end has the "fortress" with some surprises of its own (brute shot, lots of dual wieldable weapons, and a detachable turret (really fun!)), along with a lot of twists, turns, and stairways on each side. The most interesting equipment that was available on this map is the gravity lift, which I can imagine being abused rather easily by someone with a sniper rifle to get to a spot no one else can reach. This map also seemed to have the greatest variety of weapons overall and was my favorite to play.

Weapons:

The most interesting and complex weapon to use is the Spartan Laser. But it's also the most satisfying. It has a scope, but it requires that you charge it up with the right trigger for about 3 seconds until it blasts on its own; but when it blasts, it incinerates EVERYTHING in its path. I can imagine it being used a lot like a mid-range sniper rifle.

The other interesting addition was the Brute Spiker. This dual-wieldable weapon reminded me of the Halo 2 Needler. Fast fire-power and when dual-wielded it's very deadly. Speaking of the Needler, it was changed to a single-wield weapon during the Beta, but is much more powerful than the Halo 2 version.

We also have  a new grenade...the spike grenade. It's a long grenade that stops where it lands and explodes in a shower of needles. A fun weapon for sure. And I think it will be interesting to see how players can utilize it effectively. The only thing about grenades now is that you can only carry up to 2 of each (of the 3) types; so if you max out, you can only have 6 instead of 8.

They brought back the Assault Rifle from Halo 1. This is now your default weapon instead of the SMG and is only single-wieldable.

Changes to other Halo 2 Weapons: Battle Rifle (significantly worse), Covenant Carbine (significantly better), Plasma Rifle (about the same), Plasma Pistol (somewhat worse...no auto-targeting), Rocket Launcher (somewhat worse...no lock on), Brute Shot (different...requires more accuracy since it shoots straighter and with more velocity), SMG (relatively better since it's got the largest ammo clip now), Sniper and Beam Rifle (same). And most notably, the Shotgun...they gave it a little less firepower up close, but also a little more firepower at medium distance; which imo balances it out just right.

The Sword and the Spartan Pistol were absent from the Beta, but I've read that they will be in the final version.

Notable additions are the equipments. 4 types were available in the beta (Bubble shield, gravity lift, trip mine, and energy drain). All have definite uses, but the least impressive was the bubble shield since someone can run into your bubble and melee you; also, you lose your radar while you're in it. If they don't improve on it before the game releases, I don't see people using it a whole lot.

All in all, I was very pleased with where they stood with the multiplayer beta, but have the feeling that this is just a taste of what we can expect on Sept. 25. Looking forward to it.

The multiplayer experience wasn't bad at all. The only time you have to deal with the occasional idiot is in the lobby. In a game of Slayer, you don't hear any of the trash talking or immature bullshit since the communicators are turned off in the game...a refreshing change.

Well let's see. Supposing that the sales numbers of Halo and Xbox are roughly accurate, then that means only 1 out of 4 Xbox owners have a copy of Halo and 1 in 3 have Halo 2. Hmm nope, even by any stretch of the imagination the numbers still don't make a majority. Even Smash Bros Melee and Mario Kart DD have higher attach rates than that. I'm a big fan of the Xbox and I care nothing for Halo. Ironically I do own Mario Kart DD though.

I actually traded my launch copy of Halo for Sega GT and never looked back. I'm one of those other 3/4 or 2/3 Dentists that don't recommend Colgate. ;)

My point is that the article is stupid because Halo is the reason people put X-Box and FPS in the same thought bubble. When you think Halo you think X-Box, not so much so with other games.

Halo 3 has a limited edition Mountain Dew drink out.

I tried it today at work it was good :)

I amk probably going to pick up a few more bottles.
Oatbob gave me a can of it. I thought it was alright, but too cough syrup tasting. I'll stick to the original.

Yeah, MS and Pepsi have a cross-promotional deal with a limited run flavour featuring the Master Chief on the side.

Mountain Dew Game Fuel

Its pretty sweet for a soda and has 73mg of caffeine, nearly twice that of a regular can of Pepsi (38mg).  It does give a bit of a sugar rush.

Here's an interesting read. Someone on a forum was composing his top list of games, and Halo 2 was on 39. So a smarter person changed what he said into this :D

39. failo 1.5 (Xbox/Best on PC... but still shit)

Thats right folks, its FAILO 1.5, the overrated sequel to the overrated FAILO (which infected the FPS genre with its regenerating health filth)! Master Queef is back and this time the game is more medicore then ever! With new innovative features such as dual wielding (HEY, THAT WAS NEVER DONE BEFORE!), random matchmaking (ANOTHER NEW FEATURE, IT CERTAINLY WASN'T IN WARCRAFT III!), and co-op play (Sven co-op in 1999? never heard of it)! The game is absolute SHIT compared to any real FPS (aka, PC FPS games), but because its on the xflop its fucking amazing!

Four player co-op confirmed.  Hell yeah!

Quote
GS: Why extend co-op to four players this time? Come on, four Master Chiefs?

FO: Nope. One Master Chief, one Arbiter, and two brand-new Elites: N'tho 'Sraom and Usze 'Taham, respectively. Only one player actually plays as a Spartan in co-op. And yes, that would be the host.

I really like the idea.  Imagine summoning a warthog above a rival players head.  squish.  Or to be extra cruel, move the ending destination of a warp point just past the edge of a cliff.  (Is this possible?)  The rival player would have to wait the duration of the fall AND  respawn, effectively keeping them occupied.

Hey, two new contests sponsored by Pontiac...

First to Play / First to Own
http://www.pontiac.com/halo3

The First to Play lets you play it on Sept. 24th ON AN IMAX SCREEN!  Of course, you have to be present at the locations in either New York, NY or Sacramento, CA to enter.

The First to Own contest puts a free copy of the game in your hands on September 24th.  One day early... big whoop.

Both give you a quick puzzle to solve, and then you're entered in the contest.  I do have to admit that playing on an IMAX would be cool, but with how many thousands of entries will be pounded into this one, all i can say is good luck!

Wal-Mart has opened their own Halo 3 launch webpage (http://halo3.tma-walmart.com/?adid=1500000000000003256770&dest=123948), and well, they're doing a lot of extra stuff for fans out there.

stuff you can expect:
 • Halo 3 dog-tag freebie
 • checkout lanes opened for Halo 3 buyers, making for a quick getaway
 • online utility to organize the wait with your friends

The online deal gets me.  Pretty much it asks where you live, and when you want to get in and out of the store.  It then sends an e-mail to friends that you list with a link to a flash dealie that talks them through your plans.

I would say you're better off just calling them yourself.  Then your team could coordinate roles... aka, two for the waiting and buying, and another parked at the front door for the getaway.  A fourth team member waiting at home keeping the 360 warm, tray opened, television and stereo on, and four wireless controllers fully charged in the appropriate places.  With three free days of Live Gold, you're gonna want to hit it quick.

I just downloaded the latest ViDoc video from XBL Marketplace and damn! The Forge is looking better and better. It may be the best map editing feature we've seen since Far Cry: Instincts and FC:IE! 8)

And the footage on Saved Films that they showed players crushing the opposition with the Gravity Hammer...sweet! They showed someone using it to "melee" a Wartog, flipping it, and then the player stuck a grenade on it to blow it up. :o

I expect some good community-made stuff to come out of it.  They have already mentioned baseball, and making towers out of energy canisters (lob a grenade for a big boom).  I can imagine bowling, but I'm sure there will be some crazy stuff thanks to this new tool.

BIG PROBLEM with Halo 3.  Has anyone else bought the limited edition halo 3 and found the disc's loose inside the case.  Disc's and metal don't go good together.  So my brand new copy has scratches on the disc.  I plan on playing it tonight and returning it tomorrow for a new one.  You figured they would have put the game into a sleeve.

^No. The bonus disk was perfect. There was only a very slight scratch on the game disk, but it was a scratch none the less.

They swapped the game disk for the regular version's. Apparantly, that's how they're taking care of the situation with the LE buyers.

Latest update on the L.E. issue is major chain's like Wal-mart and K-mart are pulling copy's off the shelf.  My wife took mine back and tried to find a good L.E. with no luck.  So I got refunded the 10+ dollars and a regular edition Halo 3.  Microsoft CSR's are going to get an ear full from me tonight.  I'm going to see if I can get the L.E. packaging including the bonus disc.

Word on the Forge...freakin awesome!

Not only can you use it as an editor, but it acts as it's own game type.

In other words, you can compete against each other and if you're not around a weapon/item/vehicle that you want, you can make it spawn next to you immediately!...provided that there are $ available in the pool of money to do so.

And all players in the game have access to this pool of $, so once the $ are spent, items need to be deleted to get the $ back. So...if your opponent just spawned a tank and got in it, if you're in edit mode you can make it disappear!

Short of a full-blown, start-from-scratch map editor akin to Far Cry, this is outstanding in its own right and I'm sure will bring out a lot of fun and creative map variants! 8)
