I figured there must already be a post like this, but it wasn't easy enough to find, so figured I wouldn't be shot for starting a new one. Plus peoples desktops have probably changed since they last posted them on the forum, so lets see how everyone's desktops look like now for those with computers.

Here is mine. I try to keep it simple and I change the background once or twice a month. The current photo is of downtown Pittsburgh, PA.

I always hide my taskbar so it doesn't uglify my background but you can still see a small sliver of it at the bottom.  8)

My desktop still has the original WinXP background, cuz I had to reformat my hard disk recently + I don't really care that much..  Blue is supposedly the most relaxing color anyway ;)  The only times I change the background on my desktop are when I'm trying to set a mood during a party etc

in any event, after using my mac for about 1/2 year, i know ill probably never get another pc, except if i ever decide to get an all out gaming rig.....i love my mac too much.....

Apart from the old BBC computers in school, I've grown up with Windows all my life, so I've become attatched to it. It's like living in a crap town all your life. You know it's crap but you like it anyway and wouldn't want to move.

I think he prefers the whole screen to be blue instead of just the background and a little white writing in the middle of the screen ::)

It is a joke. It means that it is a lot easier to mess things up if you aren't careful.   And yeah it was based, but thats like saying Windows 95 equals DOS. 

I'll admit I never imploded from using Windows, but my laptop might explode.
My laptop doesn't enter sleep mode when I close it in Vista, and had hit almost untouchable temperatures after being left closed for a few days, so good thing I went to use it when I did.

I used to change my wallpaper weekly, but I've settled down to just this one several months ago.  I try changing it and just keep coming back.  Its got some good black empty space on the sides for icons.  That, and its nice having different wallpapers for different systems.  I use VmWare and am always switching between various windows and *nix systems.

That's one of the reasons I like using this sonic one, lots of rooms for icons and my post-its.

Haha yeah, got a bigger bed, and had to rearrange the room. So I need a longer printer cable before I can use the printer again so figured it wouldn't hurt putting off getting the ink a little longer since I can't use it right now  :slick:

I can't take any credit for the choice of font however, it's default for the -Linspire OS, I'm just very happy with it and never had any reason to change it.

I'm glad you like task bar, I tried getting the whole thing to come together and create the best Sonic feel I could.

Haven't had much time to play AA yet, I did begin training though, and like what I've seen so far, so hope to be able to get enough free time to finish training off and begin the real thing hopefully sometime next week.

The left screen is 1440 X 900 and the right is 1024 X 768. The black box just comes up when I take a screenshot because of the size differences.

I don't mind Halo, but didn't feel it really had anything that really made it stand out from the many other FPS games out there.

Hydrobond's wallpaper makes me cringe as it reminds me of level 4 (the immovable one) from Ikaruga.  Easily the hardest and longest level in the game.

Cobra, you used to use Ubuntu, didn't you? What was it like? I'm thinking of reinstalling Windowx XP but doing a dual boot with Ubuntu at the same time.

I've tried it out, as I've tried a lot of the different versions of Linux out there as it was fun seeing how different they all were. The main version of Linux I use to use was Linspire, as it had this thing called CNR (Click n Run), it takes out the whole geekiness and having to compile your own programs. It's pretty much just an iTunes for programs 'n' games.

Long story short this CNR is now in Ubuntu so as long as it's all good with your hardware compatibility side off things you should be good. The Kubuntu version has more of a Windows feel if you want something a little more familiar. Great thing is burn off the disk, and you can run the OS from CD anyway so have a chance to get the full feel of it without doing anything to your PC.

I'm downloading the Kubuntu DVD now through BitTorrents. I wouldn't try downloading it in one go, being 4.3GB! The trouble is our ISP has an "unlimited" download limit unless you download more than so much during peak times. (???) Then they throttle our connection to something silly. We're on a 2Mb line so I can only download a few hundred megabytes before they start throttling. :(

Sure it's faster to download it but using shipit you get factory pressed discs in a artworked cardboard sleeve and a row of ubuntu decals. ;)

I waited 27 hours for Kubuntu to download. I installed it and couldn't work out how to do anything. Then when I did find out, it wouldn't stop coming up with errors saying nothing can be installed. It's also very slow, I couldn't work out how to stop it being jerky, and it wouldn't install my display drivers.

Back to Windows for now. <3 Having reinstalled it, I had to activate it by phone, except the phone is in the other room...

ubuntu > Kubuntu

Seriously, you should use that free shipit service I linked to above and get yourself a couple copies of ubuntu. i386, 64 bit, you name it, it's all there all free. No wasted time downloading, burning etc and you have a real copy of it and some cool decals to cover those Windows ones on your PC. Just takes a month or so to deliver it, but it is free after all, even shipping. ;)

Sounds like a shameless plug but I've used shipit for a couple years now and it's great, and that's considering that although I can download the dvd in under an hour, having a real copy outweighs everything else.

I ordered an Ubuntu disc when I started downloading Kubuntu but I'm impatient.

Now Windows won't update for some reason. :( I'm getting there.



Edit: I found out what the single problem with Kubuntu was. I had to reinstall Adept Manager because it wasn't updating programs properly. Once everything was updated it now runs smoothly and it's fine.

That's good to hear it's working fine now. If you were still using it in live mode I would of pointed out it was limited to your CD drive speed rather than your HD.

I just spent two hours trying to install the display drivers and finally got it to do something. Now I have dual monitors but it strangely has two desktops rather than an extended desktop. I say "strange", it can probably be changed somewhere but I haven't seen this feature in Windows. It means I can't take a screenshot of the whole desktop.

Sweet, looks good. You can virtually customise every visual aspect of Linux without too much effort. Just take a look back through some of my older screens in this forum from when I was using Linux and notice how much it changes.

Oh I hate installing anything on Linux, especially video drivers as I did do that once for my miss' laptop to get decent 3D gaming out of it. A nightmare unless your lucky enough for the version of Linux your using to already have them installed. That is why I love the concept of CNR so much.

What video game/franchise is that guy from? - I've never seen him before.

I own one of these, but the one pictured isn't mine.

Default Windows 7 desktop/theme.

I haven't gone in to a lot of depth with it but it does seem like a good upgrade to XP. It will probably turn out to be a slightly tweaked Vista. :P I was considering buying Vista recently but then I found out Windows 7 isn't far away.

I set up Media Centre quickly and it worked straight off. But I had installed the OS over an Ubuntu install on a spare hard drive because Ubuntu doesn't agree with me, and I didn't want to mess up my main hard drives, which are disconnected. The Ubuntu partition is only 16GB so it was taken up quickly by Media Centre's live TV recording. I changed the directory to the F:\ drive but it still seems to save live TV to the C:\ drive and I don't know where exactly. Some TV tuning programs save the TV stream to a file as it happens so that it can be rewound and paused.

It looks nice. I really hope they'll make it less resource-consuming than Vista.

Well, this beta actually has slightly less system requirements than XP, so the must have realized that Vista was a resource hog. I actually like the new look. I'll probably find a cheap $250 laptop (1.4ghz or so) and throw Windows 7 on it when it comes out, so that I can bring a laptop to the library, etc.

Or you could always put Linux on it, of course.

From what I gather, it's designed to use more memory just because it's there. I have 2GB and it's using about half that at idle. Why have 2GB if only 256MB is ever being used? "Minimum requirements" tend not to mean anything. A game with minimum requirements of, say, a 1.5GHz P4, 256MB, and a 32MB video card woud probably only run at minimum settings, 800x600 and 10fps.

Also, there are going to be special versions of Windows 7 Mobile for laptops and netbooks.

Sometimes, but not always. Remember, I was for over 2 years running XP on a PII 450Mhz with 512MB ram, and it worked okay (not great, but it did what i needed it to), and that's well below system requirements.

With "average" I mean someone who isn't a gamer, who doesn't need professional music/video/photo programs like Photoshop, Logic, etc...

Linux users tend to use GIMP, a free alternative to Photoshop. As for Windows compared to OS X I haven't looked back. Even gaming wise, anything of interest to me is available for Mac.

The average user is a person who checks YouTube, his mails and writes a text document three times a year. ;)

Besides (as Cobra said) there are many alternatives for "doodling around" with your photos every once in a while. Of course those alternatives are only half as powerful as Photoshop (or even less) but that's all the average user needs anyway.

It has been forever since my last one of these, so here goes...

I use Ubuntu on a daily basis at home. I'm a windows programmer in my day job, but when I'm at home Ubuntu does everything I need. I don't do any kind of pc gaming, so that's not an issue. I don't own a DV camera, so I don't care about that. I can email, type up docs, surf the net, and it all just works. It's even installed on my kid's pc, they've never missed windows. My wife has it on her Acer Aspire One, and I have and Elonex OneT, with the 3mx distro installed. We've all got iPods and they work with no problems, so why would I need to pay for an OS to do all this?

I realise this is responding to an old topic, but I thought I'd get it out there. Carry on!

James is just irritated Ubuntu didn't support his old/special video card and his TV Tuner stuff didn't work.

I've got Ubuntu on my PC at home, alongside Vista. It pretty much does everything I need and it's faster than Vista, too. The only thing I'm missing is a program to write C++ in. I know there are a lot out there (I have KDevelop and Code Blocks installed, actually) but I can't get the damn compilers/targets/paths to work because I'm stupid. :(

If anyone could point me towards a step-by-step "How to install _____ and get it to work in Linux" tutorial for noobs, I'd be very grateful.

When I used Linux it was actually easier than Windows thanks to Linspire's invention CnR. Click 'n Run takes the iTunes concept of simply clicking on what you want and having it all done for you but uses it for programs and games.

This was some time ago, but it was meant to be made available for Ubuntu if you want to check it out.

Changed my wallpaper for the first time in two years. Very fitting. Cant wait to get screwed by cable in Westland. Up till a few years ago all you could get was Bright House (Time Warner) cable in Livonia. Damn they ran a monopoly on this city with over 100,000 people. Thank god AT&T now offers a option.

Crap, you're from Oregon.  How do I explain this?

What's important here is the arrow to the right.  What it means is that you cannot part between the "Welcome to Westland" sign and the "No Parking" sign.  However, if you manage to park on top of the "Welcome to Westland" sign you are in the clear, but you need to be careful, because what you can't see is the Livonia police officer hiding behind that pine tree.  I don't know about other states, but letting any wheel touch the ground while parking on top of a municipal sign is no bueno in Michigan.

mmmmm, hmmmm, I see.....I think. Here, in Oregon, as long as there is mold, moss, mud or rain water nearby, you can park there. So I guess that means you can pretty much park wherever.

Technically it isn't specific to Linux (just to Telnet).  Lucky users (i.e., Linux and OSX) can run it in CLI and it will work (since it is a UNIX command).  For Windows you should use a client (either an Add-on for a browser or if you're feeling frisky try using PuTTY) at your own risk.  Then again....

Had this for a while on my Wii U as it was one of those games I wanted the Wii U for (then after less than stellar sales for the Wii U the director's cut ended up multi platform anyway). I've still never watched Teen Titans. However, that is hilarious.

The original Teen Titans animated series is really good IMHO.  If you're into anime/anime-inspired animation and/or superhero type things, you shouldn't be disappointed.  And if you do end up a fan of that one, avoid the newer Teen Titans Go! like the plague, because you will be very, very, VERY disappointed.

I really wanted to like Devastation a lot more than I did. The visuals and audio were good and drew me right in... but then the actual game itself... It just falls so short of Hyrule Warriors and the even better Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes. I mean, no local 2 player like a lot of these games have was also a big let down.

Yeah I know. The A-10 is one of my favorites. I am a plane geek indeed. And a military one in a sense even though I don't serve. Before that wallpaper I was using a B-52 with its full payload laid out in front of it. And before that I was using an Airbus A340 picture from Russia. I use this site a lot for wall papers. That includes that A-10 up there. Right now I have a personal wallpaper I don't want to share of family but its getting old.

You know, one of the reasons I like the A-10 and B-52 is all because I played a game called A-10 Tank Killer and a B-52 game when I was like 4-5-6 years old on my families first computer that had like Windows 3 on it. So even the roots for my interests in this stuff is in video games. Plus my closest uncle is really into military stuff and planes too, hes another reason.

I have used this pic as my wallpaper since July I think. I will probably change it soon. But the symbiotic relationship between the Little Sisters and Big Daddy (or as she calls him Mr. Bubbles or Mr. B) is one of my favorite such relationships from a game. It is a sad picture and I sympathize with her though since her Big Daddy has died, so its a sad pic in many ways. I have no idea if this was an official pic done by the promo team for BioShock or if it was fan made.
