Title: Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: hXd on May 31, 2007, 04:54:14 PM
I'm riled up for this.

Who's coming back?

Who's new?

Specualtions? Opinions? Fandom? Let's have it.

I would like to get it even though fighters are not my thing. I have played the N64 version a few times.

Give Melee a shot. Definately the best out of the two.

That is until Brawl comes out.

They will probably bring everyone back from the last one(s).
I was kinda surprised to see Snake but apparently Konami approached Nintendo too late during Melee to have him worked in.
Honestly its just strange...

Sonic and/or Knuckles would be cool. I remember rumors running rampant about them being in Melee.

I know Wario is getting added so i won't be surprised to see Waluigi or other characters from the Wario series.

I just kinda hope they stop adding new playable Pokemon....

I've played SSBMelee and it seemed like a lot of over-hyperpaced button-mashing.

Granted, I didn't read the instruction book or anything so if I try it again it's entirely possible I may like it...but it's not high on my list of games to play at the moment.  :-\

Yea you can get away with button mashing.

I started seeing the depth in it about a year before i joined the Gameclub at STCC.
But those kids took it to a whole new level.

Wave dashing, timing button presses and counters within a certain number of frames, infinite bomb jumping/homing grapplebeam with Samus, reflecting all projectiles with the shields. Proving and disproving a tier system (christ almighty i hate hearing about tiers to this day.)

There is a lot of skill that can be placed in Super Smash Bros. or its later incarnation, Melee. If you play against someone with skill and you are a button masher you will be beaten.

Looking forward to Brawl. Definitely tops the want list.

I <3 the N64 version.  I got the gamecube version when it first came out (I remember it being somewhat controversial in my house by my mom for the T rating, ridiculous if you ask me),  I dont like it as much.  I dont know why.  probably because there are only a few good characters, alot of them they just dumped in there because they were nintendo.  Like I dont think we need Pichu, or mr. game and watch, dr. mario, falco or ice climbers.  thats just obscure and extremely ridiculous.  They were all clones of other characters, and I bet that half of the kids playing never heard of them with maybe the exception of pichu.

Title: Re: Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: Izret101 on June 03, 2007, 03:11:17 PM
Pichu - is pretty lame
mr. game and watch - rocks(catch projectiles and throw them back at them with combined force!?!?!?!)
dr. mario - is my character. i love caping people as they waste a triple jump to reach the ledge only to be turned away from grasp.
falco - fast and powerful and has a sweet weapons/shield.
ice climbers - carry and use 2 weapons at the same time? ROCKS

Title: Re: Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: TraderJake on June 03, 2007, 03:39:06 PM
Mr. Game and Watch and the Ice Climbers were not clones, and they were rather engaging players to use. That having been said, I'll be greatly saddened if Ness doesn't make a return.

Title: Re: Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: Izret101 on June 03, 2007, 09:09:58 PM
Ness was pretty sweet.

I will honestly be dissapointed if all of them don't return.

Even though i didn't personally like all the characters they all added their own unique dynamic to the game.

Title: Re: Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: hXd on June 04, 2007, 12:10:47 AM
My calls for who's coming back other than Mario, Pikachu, Link, Samus, Fox and Kirby:

Yoshi- They've already shown a Yoshi stage so he's an automatic in.

DK- You just can't have a Nintendo fighting game without DK. 'Nuff said.

Zelda/Sheik- They were very popular in Melee and frankly I would be shocked f they didn't return.

Captain Falcon- Again, very popular and an absolute powerhouse with ridiculous speed. No way he's getting left out.

Ness- I feel as though he's a underdog for return, but he's got a very loyal fanbase that would castrate Sakurai if he wasn't put in.

Ice Climbers- One of the more unique characters, unique enough to have a second go.

Peach- A surefire addition due to her Mario mainstay status, the same as....

Luigi- ...this guy. Impossible to have Smash without them.

Bowser- As painfully slow as he was, the Mario franchise portion of Smash needs a villain.

Falco- I will be SEVERLEY dissapointed if Falco is not in Brawl. He also happened to be the best character in Melee.

Marth- The best player in the USA uses Marth. Although if not for wavedashing Marth would actually suck really bad.

Jigglypuff- Probably the biggest underdog for return. But you can be sure there won't just be one Pokemon in the game.

The Rejects

As for the rest....I heard from a source that Sakurai is not putting in any "clones" in Brawl, so unless they change everyone's move lists, that automatically cancels out Young Link, Ganondorf, Roy, Dr. Mario and Pichu (the worst character ever).

Mewtwo was the second worst chracter in Melee, jokingly dubbed as "The Unfinished Character", so bye-bye.

Game And Watch was a unique character, but unfortunately I don't think he has enough pull from the fans to be considered for Brawl.

The Requests

Fighters I'd like to see:

Sonic- There is a game coming out in 2008 with Mario and Sonic in the same game, so he'd be a logical pick. Besides, Sega, Namco and Nintendo have the "TriForce" thing going on.

Simon Belmont- The legendary whip-wielding hero from Castlevania would be a fresh choice, maybe using those Holy Water and Cross subweapons for "B" attacks.

Derek Stiles- A unique choice from Trauma Center, maybe using forceps and a bandage attack that paralyzes opponents. He would basically be the new Dr. Mario.

Cooking Mama- An oddity character that would use kitchen items (probably no knives, though) and food as attacks. If they could make Game And Watch work, they can make her work, too.

Arthur- Ghosts 'N Goblins, the heyday of NES. If they can ressurect Pit they may as well get this guy out of retirement.

And that's all I got for now. I tried to stick to games I've played, but I have seen some other intersting choices.

If this hold any truth I've finally given up on  SEGA ever being the same again, and my Saturn collection is now on sale.

If memory serves the opening of that vid is when MetaKnight enters and if you really analyze that video far to much changes in each cut.

I think it is fake.
But i would still like to see Sonic/Knuckles/Robotnick(NOT EGGMAN grrrrr......) in there.

Oh I thought of another one:

Psycho Mantis- Snake needs an enemy, and who better than the greatest MG villain of all time. Except, no controller tricks...please.

4 possible control styles for this game have been unveiled:

  • Wii Remote used sideways similar to the style used in Excite Truck
  • Wii Remote & Nunchuk combination
  • Nintendo's new "Classic Controller"
  • Gamecube controller (most likely Wavebird as well)

You know everyone's gonna use the GameCube controller. Although personally I would like to try the classic controller with that grip that Nyko(?) made, the one that attaches the WiiMote with it.

Additionally, where the hell is Ness? I'll be really saddened if Ness doesn't make it in.

I'd love Ness to be in again. I loved him in the first one, they badly nerfed him for Melee though...

I just want Falco and Luigi, to hell with the others.

Roy is better than Marth.  Marth is good,  but Roy is much quicker.

That is wrong... Marth is quicker.

Marth and Roy

Wavedash length: Marth's is longer
Running speed: Marth is faster
Taunt length: Not sure, but I think Marth's is faster?
Marth's sweetspot is at the very tip of his sword
Roy's sweetspot is at the center of his sword.
Marth is stronger than Roy.
Marth is heavier than Roy.
Marth's ground A attack comes out faster continuously than Roy's.
Roy's special attacks are stronger.
Roy's throws are stronger, but Marth can chain throw better
Roy falls faster than Marth.
Roy's up B is slower than Marth's and has multiple hits.
Marth's dair is a spike (not a meteor smash)
Roy's dtilt sends the opponent up, while Marth's sends the opponent downwards.
Roy's Usmash has multiple hits and can “spike” if you hit with the tip of his sword.

Just announced today that GIGA BOWSER is Bowser's Final Smash. Quite possibly the strongest Final Smash.

The Final Smash is like a super move, a personalized 'hammer' if you will. Mario's is a huge kamehameha-like fireball that goes across the screen, Link's is a series of sword slashes to an enemy caught between two Triforces, Pikachu's turns himself into a giant eletric ball that's controllable, and Bowser's is tranforming into Giga Bowser for a little while.

Wow... you're strange ;)

I love Smash Bros, and for a fighting game with very simple controls it actually can play very complex.  Not everyone will love something though. For those people, there is Street Fighter.

It's funny, the people who frequent the Evo East competitions (all people who play Marvel vs. Capcom 2) all call Smash "Marvel Jr." because there are so many hidden complexities in the controls.

I've always found like many of the core Nintendo franchises that it's an acquired taste usually more popular with players who are diehard Nintendo fans first and foremost. The game really caters to their tastes well. I have the N64 version and played Melee, but I just can't get into it.

Title: Re: Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: OatBob on July 18, 2007, 11:33:43 AM
I love it, but I suppose I did grow up mostly on Nintendo consoles.  The interesting thing to me about the games is the history tied up in a neat little package.  I mean, Pit is gonna be one of the big fighters and he only starred in one game (Kid Icarus) 20 years ago.  Heck, even a lot of the weapons have had some significance in one game or another.

Now, if you're really nostalgic for something you likely never even experienced for yourself, read the info associated with all the trophies in Melee.  Several of those were from games that didn't make it out of Japan, and I doubt younger gamers would recognize half of the NES era ones. (Balloon Fighters, Ice Climbers, etc.)

I don't get it. The game missed X-play's top 10 games ever reviewed by them, which is understandable, but their reasoning is screwed up. They state melee has a weak single player, like all fighting games IMO, but go on to say the game doesn't have depth. That's a load of crock. The game appears as simplistic 2d fighter on surface value, but like all fighting games there are layers to it, as you can see by the Marth vs. Roy comparison I posted, not to mention techniques I'm sure X-play has never heard of such as wavedashing. Bleh.

Also, the lack of Metroid Prime on their top 10 games is completely outragous. I for one understand that not everyone likes it, but dear God, Up Your Arsenal which is the worst of the R&C trilogy managed to place.

Title: Re: Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: Cobra on July 20, 2007, 07:48:52 PM
Argh, I can't stand X-Play, they don't count anyway...... bring back Game Spot please....
X-Play's over the top soap-opera antics and all out stupidity completely kill it for me, watching it and having to put up with their lame jokes, horrible reviews, lame ass sketches, games being dubbed by the hosts and watching random items thrown over the screen while trying to see how the game looks for yourself......

To be honest I'd rather buy a PS3 than ever see another full episode of that ever again.

I grow weary of X-plays hosts and commentary, but every once in a while I can dig out a nugget of gameplay.  To be honest, I like Cheat! more because, although I have none of the games they ever show, you get longer gameplay clips with some of the unadvertised aspects of the game.  One example is launching your friends sky-high through a grenade trick, or how Crackdown's energy orb collection adds more hours to the game.

Ah, this brings back fond memories of my arcade fighting days. Anyone remember the Electric Wind Godfist in Tekken? You had a 3 frame window the push the punch button or it didn't work. That was skill.

I played a guy in Melee one time who beat me in a stock match and only took 12% damage. He used Captain Falcon. I was pretty good at melee too. That guy was just sick. Calling SMB a button masher is just wrong.

But you can get away with it if you're playing scrubs.

finally, someone agrees.  the first one was way better.  I first played the N64 one when I was 7, and saved up all summer when I was like 10 or 11 to get melee.  of course this game was controversial in my household.  im not going to get brawl until I play it.

They dropped him from the cartoons, and I watched a newer one the other day and tah-dah... he magically returns.  Same thing happened with Brock a long time ago.  You'ld think he'ld really mature and become some great Pokemon master or something... guess not.  For the games, its always a generic new trainer... male or female starting with the Gold and Silver versions.  The only constant are the three default names.

Okay, to quickly recap my standings in the predictions, I correctly guessed that Zelda, Bowser, Yoshi, DK and Peach were returning, making my wins 5.

I'm pretty sure at this point Shiek is not returning, since the Zelda model is from Twilight Princess, and that Marth is not returning, since Ike is in the game.

So far that makes my current standings 5-2.

Diddy Kong in SSBB (http://kotaku.com/gaming/take-that%2C-link/diddy-kong-ready-to-beat-up-ssbb-292089.php)

Donkey Kong's pal has finally joined the battle! Unfortunately, screenshots fail to truly capture the way he moves.
He scrambles around the battle, using whimsical fighting moves while wielding both his Rocketbarrel Boost and Peanut Pop Gun!

I think it would be cool if they added pro wrestlers to the mix.

Imagine a fight between Princess Peach and Hulk Hogan...or Mario vs the Iron Shiek...or Bowzer vs Mankind. Mario brandishing a folding chair would be hilarious!

I'd buy a Wii just to play that game! 8)

I love the idea of online play, basically because all my friends that play Smash are back in NY. I don't like the idea of not being able to see the names of your opponents when you're not fighting friends and no voice chat. C'mon Nintendo, take a hint from FPS's like Counterstrike.

Oh and I successfully predicted Ice Climbers. 6-2.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is in SSB: Brawl!

I mean, everyone expected it, and Sora even said he wanted it, but acted like Sega wasn't interested.  Of course I should have seen it after the Sonic/Mario Olympics game.

I am now officially glad I didn't cash in my reserve order and waited the game out.

I think im the only one that thinks this, but I dont like to see sonic or snake.  I used to like seeing snake in there, but I was thinking about it last night.  in the next game, they'll probably have more non-nintendo characters, and the game after that, more.  eventually there will be alot of non-nintendo characters which isnt really the point of the game.

yeah, because back in the day when the series was first made, it was supposed to be a fighter for nintendo characters... which back then was a pretty rad idea.

Personally I think that Olimar is a waste of a character slot. I'm sure that he has an interesting moveset, but a character of his caliber I think  would be better suited as an Assist Trophy.

Title: Re: Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: TraderJake on January 09, 2008, 03:26:42 PM
I actually thought he was an assist trophy when I saw his name pop up. I was definitely surprised when it turned out he was an actual character.

I'll reserve judgment on the character roster until I see the final list. But there is so much stuff in this game. It truly is a killer app.

Title: Re: Smash Bros. Brawl

Post by: hXd on January 12, 2008, 12:36:26 PM
There's always a possibility that they could 64 it and make Ness and Captain Falcon unlockables again..what with the game being so close to release that's probably the most likely scenario. It seems like all the original one man franchises are getting more than one rep this time around, hopefully that will prove true with Earthbound.

Okay so after seeing this image at gonintendo.com, I would say it's safe to assume that this roster shown will be the final roster:

Now to review my predictions:

So I had to make some adjustments to my standings. I successfully predicted everyone in the first bracket + Sonic, but I went back on my standings on Shiek and Marth, so that counts as 2 losses. Plus I was a complete jackass and voted against Ganondorf, and lost honestly on my standing on Game And Watch, so that would make my final score 13-4. Not a bad score, if I say so myself.

This is also pending on the fact that there might be new info besides what's been released so far, but I'm pretty sure this is it. There's 33 characters in that roster, and I doubt they would probably wanna squeeze anyone else in there.

Supposedly the final unlockable character has been revealed, and it's...

Wolf, from StarFox.

Sigh, no Simon Belmont. Oh well.

That sounds fake to me. I could be wrong though- the Doc could be an alternate costume, like how Wario has his classic costume as an alternate. Time will tell.

Wow what the hell, Falco isn't the best character at all. He's a top tier but there are three broken characters above him, as in they deal way more damage than any other character. Marth, Fox, and Sheik are unbelievably broken, this really can't be argued if you look at their speed, damage they give, throws, spikes, etc.

100% disclosure, at the time that I wrote that I was a bit biased, as I mained Falco. Since then I've branched out my character taste, and now I tend to main C.Falcon, Samus, and Marth.

you could be missing out.  Like anything, whether you like it or not is up to your tastes, but you could be missing out on an outstanding game.

This one is best played with friends at parties, or at weekend dorm tourneys.

Sad. In one week, it sold 8 times what No More Heroes has done in its lifetime.

I need to get in on some hardcore tourney action. The last time I tourneyed was before I moved to Georgia at a toy store. That was a great one.

Smash Brothers is very heavily hyped mind you, there needs to be more awareness of No More Heroes. No More Heroes still has my greatest interest of all the Wii library.

Well you gotta remember that Smash Bros. is made for all ages, whereas NMH is targeted to (or should be) late teens-adults. Of course Smash is gonna garner more attention, because it appeals to a larger audience. Don't get me wrong, NMH is a brilliant game (my avatar is a character *wink wink*), but I'm a Smasher at the core.

I couldn't agree more! NMH is the best game on the Wii.

Which is why it's rated T for teen right? ;)

You think parents really pay attention to those ratings? Based on everything I've seen of the game so far, there's nothing unsuitable for little kids in Smash. Hell all my little brothers play it, and they're not even in double digit ages yet. Compared with NMH, where the save screen is Travis taking a shit.

I created a method in training mode to boost your max combo.

-Make a custom map where you can corner the comp.
-Enter training in your custom map, place the comp in your boxed-in corner.  You may want to set the speed to 2/3 to help out later.
-Spawn a smart bomb, throw it at the comp.  Be sure to be close by, if not in the explosion.
-Quickly open the menu, and continue to spawn more smart bombs.  The initial explosion should instantly trigger the next one to explode.  Continue to spawn these bombs, ensuring a little time in between each detonation.

If you did this right, you should get a high consecutive combo.  Each smart bomb deals out 32x blows, so a good chain can get you far.  My first try I got 339.  Lets see if I can top 1000.  I also have a feeling that later on, I may need to quickly reset the comps health between between bombs, because I don't know if they can get hurt at the full 999%.

UPDATE:
darn, the combo meter max'ed out at 999.

You don't need to do the health thing, and you can speed it up to 1.5 once you have it going.

snake snake snaaaaaaake

lol, today's update (http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/howto/technique/technique11.html) includes a special taunt that can be activated by Snake on Shadow Moses Island.  Barely tap a down taunt (normally hiding under a box) and he calls up Otacon.

This is great, the game's been out a week and a half here, and several months in Japan.  Yet, the DOJO continues to have great updates.  Excellent way to cater to your fanbase Sora!

After playing it for a while, I can say that this is the best Smash yet. Although I disagree with taking some of the advanced techs out, it really helps to level the playing field and allows people who are confident with not-so-great characters to beat people who use good characters just because they're good.

Look at Melee- if you used Marth, Fox or Falco, you were guaranteed a win (unless you're really bad at the game). Now, some one who plays Yoshi has just as good a chance of winning as the Marth player, which is something I really admire.

Kudos to Sakurai and Sora. Thanks for making a fantastic game.

I have played it a bit, not nearly as much as Melee the weeks leading up to it, but it's fun. Kinda sucks how much slower it is, the lack of wavedashing (yeah, that actually bothers me, I used it a lot), and how Sheik completely sucks now. Other than that it's fun. I don't really see it being as competitive as Melee though.

Oh yeah, I use Pit. Not sure if anyone uses him but he's fairly well balanced and is a beast at edge guarding. Really funny, my brother uses Lucas and when he tries to get back on I shoot an arrow at his electric bolt which causes him to be unable to jump again or perform another attack.

Title: Re: Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: hXd on March 21, 2008, 01:10:05 PM
I main Lucas and Zero Suit Samus. ZSS is what Sheik should have been in Melee- quick but not totally overpowered. I actually like that Shiek got nerfed, because now people will actually try Zelda, who was so underrated in Melee and is one of the better characters in Brawl.

Title: Re: Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: Shimra on March 21, 2008, 01:52:41 PM
I started using ZSS but she was just way too underpowered in my opinion. I know her speed is insane but she's just a little too weak for my liking. Toon Link seems like he might be the most unbalanced character, though not by much. They did an extremely good job balancing the characters.

I have only been able to play SSBB for about an hour and a half so far, but my impressions aren't very good.  Now, the first two were killer multiplayer games, so I won't decide on it until I can get some good multiplayer action, but here are my first impressions:

The levels seem smaller, I don't really like this.  My favorite level in the last iteration of SSB was Zelda's Castle (most likely not its real name, but it's close enough.)  I liked it because it was large.  I don't know how many people will agree with me on that.

Pikachu fit like a glove.  I only really used Pikachu in the original SSB.  And the only two characters I played as in the last game were Pikachu and Roy.  Roy isn't back, but Marth is and also a new swordsman who seems even slower than Marth.  I guess I will be sticking with Pikachu for now.

I have not played with the level builder yet, but it sounds like a really, really good idea.  Does anyone know if the maps are going to be sharable through the Web?

Does anyone else think that the game is a bit slower than the others?  (Or is that just me lacking the control skills in the new game?)

At this point, it just seems like the same game over again.  In most respects this is a good thing, but I guess I was expecting the game to wow me from the get-go since they had a lot of time to work on it.  The game is very well done, but it didn't wow me.

One thing I do applaud them for is NOT using the damn pointer.  It doesn't work well with large TVs and it has too much of a delay.  Would have killed the game.

The physics are slower. Think this is probably to put more emphasis on combat instead of running and hiding. There are some gigantic levels that may actually be bigger than Hyrule Castle (which is in Brawl as well) such as a complete remake of the original Donkey Kong's level 3 and a very weird level called New Pork City to name a few. Pikachu is very likely a top tier character when the 'official' list is released. Also to note the dodging in Brawl is much better than in melee; being able to dodge immediately backwards after a jump is a nice improvement as well as being able to perform multiple dodges in midair and still attack. The only thing that kinda bothers me is you can't dodge into the ground at an angle and slide, but hey only a few people actually used that technique a lot.

Ness is still my favorite, Pit is #2 for me.

They slowed down Ness too much.

Lucas is my new Main, Ness is Number 2.

I did notice that he is slower now.  But I prefer him to Lucas because he does more damage, and I don't really like how Lucas' PK fire and thunder work.

Like I said, I only played a few levels.  Though I should have clarified in my post, I don't really like the levels that move.  Hyrule Castle was the largest stationary level, and I didn't see one that large in the game for the small time I played it.  It really is a group game and I haven't had the opportunity to explore the game well yet.

I'll venture a guess at a new tier list:

Top:
Pikachu
Pit
Toon Link
Marth
Lucas

High:
Mario
Sonic (No KO capability, but his speed saves him)
Olimar
ROB
Bowser
Zelda/Shiek
Lucario
Zero Suit Samus

Middle:
Ike
Ness
Peach
Diddy Kong
Kirby
King Dedede
Squirtle/Ivysaur/Charizard
Samus
Yoshi

Low:
Donkey Kong
Metaknight (I don't know why people think he's that great, no KO capability)
Wolf
Luigi
Ganondorf

Bottom:
Link
Captain Falcon (It disgusts me how much he got nerfed)
Jigglypuff

Title: Re: Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: Shimra on March 23, 2008, 11:14:09 PM
Wolf should be way higher. From what I understand he is supposed to be the best out of the Star Fox team. He isn't quite as fast as Fox and a bit more versatile.

Title: Re: Smash Bros. Brawl
Post by: hXd on March 24, 2008, 12:56:52 PM
His recovery blows though, which is why I put him on bottom. Once he's knocked off, it's near impossible to get the ledge because his up + b has no mobility.

Title: Re: Smash Bros. Brawl

His over b is decent for getting back on. Personally I don't use him but I can see that he has some potential perhaps.

But yeah other than that I think that is a really good list.
