It snowed quite a bit more, in the afternoon. :D

I'd say about 15-20cm (= 1/2nd - 2/3rd of a foot) of snow has fallen. The quality is excellent, I might add.

It's night now but not snowing anymore, it'll depend on the temperature of the soil whether it'll stay or melt tommorow.

Are you in the UK or New Zealand, James?

Because -6°C doesn't seem cold at all for the UK. It's been colder than that in Belgium (that I remember myself) and they're so close together there's barely a difference. The UK should be colder, actually.

In the UK. As I said, it's obviously been colder but I haven't experienced it here. I think, apart from being up a skiing mountain, the coldest I've been in was -10*C in Paris. The weather reports have been saying parts of the UK are currently -10*C. It's -2*C where I am, and it's just started snowing.

I thought it was bad how a couple of inches of snow brings this country to a stop. There's a news item on BBC about how the chilly weather is causing havoc. ::)

Apparently it's the coldest winter in the UK since 1996.

Yeah, it's hilarious what a teeny bit of snow does. It's even more funny when you realise a day of snow happens atleast once a year in Belgium, yet people still act like it's the first time they see it. :P

I'm not sure about the coldest winter in Belgium, but two days ago was the coldest day since a day in 1997.

That's nothing, here in Ohio (and many other areas in the US) it's not unheard of to have a 40 degree difference between one day and the next. Back in December for example we were wearing T-shirts outside one day and shoveling snow the next.

The snow melted and the sun is shining. :)

It's 4 °C / 34°F.

Question: what's the logic behind the Fahrenheit scale because I'm not seeing it. If the converter site I'm using is correct then water freezes at 32°F. Is there a reason for that?

The freezing point of water is 0°C in Celcius. It makes sense because it's easy to see when it'll snow/freeze and when not.

There isn't, really...

The F and C scales actually converge at about -34C and -34F, so it gets even more confusing at lower temperatures. Celsius just makes more sense, but America is one of the few countries still on imperial...

Oh, and now:

Berwyn, IL: -9F, -23F wind chill (-23C and -31C).

Thar be cald.

The only part of the Fahrenheit scale that makes sense is that once it gets over 100°F it's generally considered very hot, like hot enough that you don't want to e outside any more than you do when it's -10.
But you're right, the Celsius scale would make more sense to use. It's used heavily in the scientific world, we're just not using it enough to get a "feel" for it like we have with Fahrenheit.

High today was 10°F and the low was -5°F. Supposed to be colder tomorrow and then warm up to the 20's on Saturday.

The freezing point of water is 0°C in Celcius. It makes sense because it's easy to see when it'll snow/freeze and when not.
Here's an explanation from everyone's favorite bastion of "knowledge", Wikipedia.

Quote
According to Fahrenheit himself in an article he wrote in 1724,[2] his scale is based on three reference points of temperature. The zero point is determined by placing the thermometer in a mixture of ice, water, and ammonium chloride, a salt. This is a type of frigorific mixture. The mixture automatically stabilizes its temperature at 0 °F. He then put an alcohol or mercury thermometer into the mixture and let the liquid in the thermometer descend to its lowest point. The second point is the 32 degree found by putting the thermometer in still water as ice is just forming on the surface. The third point, the 96 degree, was the level of the liquid in the thermometer when held in the mouth or under the armpit. Fahrenheit noted that, using this scale, mercury boils at around 600 degrees.

Kinda makes sense when you think of it that way. Fahrenheit didn't base his scale on the freezing of water, but instead something else.

I certainly agree with what you said about the freezing point of water in Celsius. It makes far more sense, but when you've lived in the States long enough, you get used to Fahrenheit and know that the freezing point is 32.

Oh yeah, -13°F (-25°C)

Yeah, it makes some sense indeed, but the things he based his scale on are kind of random for everyday life. The freezing point of water is far more important than that obscure mixture he made or the temperature of your armpit. :P (From a nature/environment point of view, that is the temperature that marks the biggest "changes" in the weather, thus it makes sense to make that 0° and not a random number like 32°)

It strikes me that the most important nation in the world is using all these outdated/complicated unit models. (temperature, length, volume, ... everything it seems :P)

I actually think F is better than C as well. Applying it to medicine, for example, if you took someone's temperature and it was 98.6 degrees, you'd know that it's "normal". And yes, we're really used to our weather readings being interpreted this way as well, so it would take quite a paradigm shift to get around changing from F to C in this country.

However, for any other things like yards, miles, and pounds...accepting meters, kilometers and kilograms to replace them wouldn't be as difficult. We do have km & kg measurements on many of our vehicles and product labels, respectively. I think American football would be the only obstacle to changing from yards to meters, though. 8)

Current temp this morning was -8 degrees, wind chill -20 (or lower).

High 64F/Low 34F Clear skies in Denver, CO.

We have seen measurable snow only once this year so far. 2 inches and it melted completely before the sun went down that day.

The mountains and ski resorts are averaging between 16% and 39% of the expected snowpack for the season to date. The most snow that has fallen in any of them has been 16.9 inches, and the expected for the season thus far should be 51.4 inches in that same one for reference.

It has been a very dry year for us, but that seems to be the going trend as I haven't seen a good snowstorm in over 15 years.

Not greatly different in Spokane. 42 and raining. But its has been warmer the last week or two. There was a week or 2 it was in the 20s and 10s. Also no snow in a week or so I guess.

Many people have a misconception that Washington as a whole is rainy and mild temperatures throughout. Spokane gets colder and much much more snow than Seattle but gets much less rain and gets a decent bit warmer in the summer. So more extremes, worse winters but also better if you like warm summers. Although that also means it can get more uncomfortably hot than Seattle as well.

Yes I am up at 3 Am.  ;)

One of my uncles actually works in Oregon, I think its Corvallis or something. He drives home every weekend and lives north of here like 20-25 miles on a farm type property with horses and stuff. I/this branch of the family kind of doesn't get along with his wife so we don't talk to them much at all anymore but I still keep him in mind when I hear the roads are bad and stuff.
