Title: Killzone 2
Post by: Sirgin on December 04, 2008, 02:16:20 PM
This game has taken so long to develop...good it's coming out in februari.

Here's some nice campaign footage:

And some multiplayer gameplay:

The game looks great to me, who will be getting it?

Price, most likely.

This, and I don't have a TV to make it worth it, and my PC can run current games just fine.

Granted, if I do get a console from this generation, it'll be the PS3

I'm pretty excited for it, but I'd like a demo to see how it plays first.

I'm going to buy this when I get a PS3. I enjoyed the first one even though a lot of people thought it was rubbish.

Killzone 2 is getting a lot of good reviews, it seems. One more month and PS3 owners will finally be able to play this awesome game. :)

GT hasn't done a review yet, so here's a preview to hold you over:

I broke down and pre-ordered it from amazon.  Its $56.99, but they also have a coupon KZ2SAVE5 which brings the price down to 51.99.  Plus they have free shipping, so I bought it. :)  And they also include Killzone themed Home stuff YEAH... not ;D

I hear ya. I know a couple of people that have the PS3, but I'm still not interested in the system until it drops to at least under $200. When my friends and I get together to play multiplayer we all have 360's.

Microsoft really knew what they were doing with the 360.

It seems to be more important to be the first on the next gen market than making the best system. Now that I think about it, many "worse" systems won a console generation, because they were first for sale.

Not so sure about the importance of being 1st to market. Nintendo came out a year after the 360 and it's the leader this generation and is selling out everywhere.

When 360 is compared to PS3 as the 1st to market, though, by coming out early the 360 may have included less overall features (i.e. no Blu-Ray or WiFi installed) but the gaming capabilities are more than comparable for graphics, sound, etc. to make up for it, imo.  The features on XBL and XBLA help its case as well. And you weren't forced into paying for a Blu-Ray player as a cost of the console like Sony imposed upon it's gaming audience.

The other thing to also consider is that the original Xbox was more geared toward multiplayer (offline because it had 4 controller ports standard & online through the evolution of XBox Live) than the PS2 or GC even thought to target at the time. So yeah, I agree that MS knew what it was doing with the 360. 8)

That all being said, though, Killzone 2 has been getting solid reviews across the board for PS3 owners. But there still isn't enough in the PS3 library to convince me to drop the cash on it. If a God of War 3 bundle comes in at under $200, though, I'd have to seriously consider it.

You don't have to agree with me on this one but I don't count Nintendo when I say that. The Wii has an audience 10 times larger than any of its rivals simply because it has a different audience. Sure, the hardcore guys have a Wii too but it's not that they form the majority or even a large minority of the Wii's audience so saying the Wii leading this generation is a bit far-fetched because it's a totally different device in my opinion.

Sure Nintendo counts. The Wii may attract a different gaming demographic, but no matter how you slice it the Wii is still a gaming device. The ratio of casual gamers to hardcore gamers who buy it is irrelevant; both groups are still buying it to play games. Mind you, I am not defending Nintendo, I certainly don't believe they deserve to be market leader, necessarily, but to attempt to discredit their success is futile.

Anyways, back on topic, Killzone 2 is definitely shaping up to be a must-have exclusive for the PS3. A bit surprising to me, since the first one was so "meh". I only played it for an hour or too before getting bored. Looking forward to playing the sequel however when I get a PS3.

I don't really want to start into this again; but the PS3 is the superior machine with more exclusives and more standard components for your buck.

Even if you don't care about all the PS3 goodies, when you come down to pricing, Live will have you paying more over the years for your 360 than you ever will on a PS3.

There are so many things wrong with that outdated and biased comparison it isn't even funny. Hell half of those games aren't exclusives or don't exist yet and neither system bundle is even sold anymore.

  80Gb PS3 = $399.99
160Gb PS3 = $519.99

Versus

  60Gb X360 = $299.99
120Gb X360 = $399.99

No really. If you hear what they've done, you'll be damned impressed.

From what I've seen and heard, it looks to be a really good game. But not anything worth "salivating" over. And it certainly isn't enough to sell me on the system when I have games like Halo 3, Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty 3, and Gears of War 2 to play on the 360.

I guess certain features mean a lot more to me than others. Since I play a lot of offline multiplayer with friends, I value games that offer 4-player/TV split screen and system link; also co-op. I also value games with level editors. These features don't come in many games, so when they're available I give them higher priority than other games that do not have such features.

For example, I was greatly looking forward to Far Cry 2, but when I found out it's only 1 person per box/TV and didn't have the 4-player split screen of the original I was greatly disappointed. I loved the level/map editor features of the earlier games, but to take out the 4-player split screen really wrecked it as far as it being a "must-buy" title when it came out.

But that's just my $.02.

From all indications, though, it sounds like PS3 owners should definitely enjoy Killzone 2. And to that I say "Good for them!". It's just not for me.

Everything I've seen leads me to conclude it's another Resistance Halo: Gears of Killzone. I don't know how you people can tell the difference half the time. It's like trying to separate Doom and Doom II. If someone showed me footage of KZ2 and said it was a Resistance expansion, I wouldn't know any better.

If this is the uber-badass shooter on the PS3, then there's no need to waste money on Resistance 1 or 2 then is there? If I got an itch for a FPS on the PS3, I wouldn't bother with sloppy seconds and just go for the best on the system and by the hype, this week it must be KZ2?

Yeah, I think that's a fair statement.

Resistant 2 isn't bad by any means though. It's worth playing a demo of to see if you like it. And even if you don't won't to get it right away, it definitely is a title to pick up once it hit bargain prices. :)

Just because a new FPS comes out does not make an old one obsolete. Aren't we all fans of classic games? We should know that.

Gotta side with Tondog on this one.. when I do get a PS3, I plan on playing both Resistance titles AND Killzone 2, I don't really see how one makes the other obsolete. If that were true, then why buy any game in any genre at all, every new release would make the older titles in a genre obsolete following that logic.

Title: Re: Killzone 2
Post by: Tan on February 05, 2009, 02:11:27 PM
Obsolete isn't a good word for it and it's not a word I had used at all. It's what Call of Duty 4 did to 2 and 3, what Halo 3 did to Halo 2, Gear 2 to Gear 1. Whatever you call it, a casual shooter fan would have a hard time telling the difference between sci-fi shooter A and sci-fi shooter B when buying a shooter for casual play.

If I was willing to spend $60 on one shooter for the PS3, play it online for a while, trade it in later on when something better comes along, then buying 2 of them when one has already been eclipsed for online activity and technical prowess seems pointless. But that's just my opinion because console shooters are hit and miss for me. They all go bang, throw grenades and pretend there's a story. I just want the prettiest, best sounding one for mindless action.

If you understand that then you understand Madden sales every year. Would you recommend Madden 07, and 08 alongside 09? Or NHL 06, 07, 08, 09 along with NHL 2k6, 2k7, 2k8, 2k9? NHL 09 is the best current hockey game period, save your money on the rest of them unless your a hardcore fan. The perspective is a lot different if your just getting into a genre on a system than it is having lived through it from day 1 which may have led to you buying each one over the years.

That's why I asked. The hype and reactions lead me to believe that KZ2 is the end all and be all of shooters right now on the PS3. Three futuristic FPSes cost $180, one only costs $60. The other $120 could nab me the best NHL game and best racing game ensuring that I have 3 new totally different games being played online extensively instead of three similar ones with varying degrees of activity.

Only problem is you're speaking from a multiplayer perspective Tan, and from that perspective, you're absolutely correct. However, what separates Resistance 1 and 2 and Killzone 2 is the fact that they all have campaigns, whereas obviously a sports series like Madden does not. The single player campaigns are what make me want to buy/play all 3. If the campaigns didn't exist, and they were strictly multiplayer affairs, then I'd agree with you.

For anyone who only cares about multiplayer the same holds true, so it really depends on what the individual gamer cares about.

If that were true, then why buy any game in any genre at all, every new release would make the older titles in a genre obsolete following that logic.

At this point, not much is known about the features in KZ2 that differentiate it from other FPSs. But this is where the debate begins.

Looking at some of the FPSs from the past year or so (using multiplatform titles for purposes of this example), how many of them actually have retained their popularity and have done enough to differentiate themselves from other FPS titles to stand the test of time...thus far?

CoD 4: Modern Warfare? -- Yes
CoD: World at War?  -- Yes
Battlefield: Bad Company? -- No
Rainbow Six Vegas 2? -- No
Far Cry 2? -- No

Granted, "obsolete" is a bit harsh of a term to use because obviously a game like Resistance 1 or 2 (or the titles mentioned above) won't ever be considered shovelware. And the point of this discussion isn't whether KZ2 is a good game. Early reviews have supported that it is. The question is will it hold up when compared to other FPSs or will it eventually end up on one's gaming backlog as just another shooter when something new comes out to replace it (i.e.Resistance 3, CoD: MW2)? Also, what happens to Resistance 2's longevity after KZ2 comes out?

All of the games listed above were reviewed well on their own merits, but the CoD series is still on top in terms of longevity (multiplatform). This indicates that it has the blend of features and gameplay that players continually want to participate in, and that the game itself created enough of a breakthrough in the genre to sustain its popularity.

So for purposes of this argument, a few things remain to be seen:
1. What differentiates KZ2 from other shooters in the genre and what will give it longevity?
2. Will Resistance 2 be a "backlog" title in PS3 libraries when KZ2 comes out?
3. Is KZ2 good enough to compete with the CoD series for PS3 gamers over the course of time?

Obviously, time will tell.

What makes you think Resistance 2 isn't worth anymore to be playing online? Maybe I'm wrong but I have a hunch you just don't like the Resistance franchise. That's perfectly fine, but you shouldn't try to make it look as if it isn't even worth looking at anymore. I pulled these stats from wikipedia:

Quote from: Wikipedia
Resistance 2 has been well-received by critics, with a current Metacritic aggregate score of 87 out of 100, based on 74 reviews,  and a Game Rankings aggregate of 87%, based on 55 reviews.

Also, your comparison to the Madden games isn't really a fair one. Those are the same thing every year except a little bit better (or in some cases: a little bit worse) while these are two distinctly different franchises with different stories, etc...

You make it seem like only gaming "masterminds" will be able to differentiate both titles, but I'm convinced even the more casual player will be able to tell the difference. ;)

I agree. I love single-player FPS campaigning. It makes me sick when games like CoD only have 3-6 hour campaigns; as good as they may be. For online stuff there's Valve, I want an awesome, epic campaign.

I obviously haven't been communicating very well. Something I should work on perhaps. Maybe then I wouldn't have to waste my time here typing ridiculously long posts and rebuttals all the time for no good reason.

 - I wasn't comparing Madden's gameplay to any other game.
 - I have no ill will towards the Resistance series
 - My perspective was from a balanced point of view (online/campaign)

I tried to explain but folks are reading way too much into this. Is KZ2 the biggest badass sci-fi shooter on PS3 or is there something better? That's it.

Is CoD 5 the best WWII game because I don't want to waste money on any of a half dozen inferior clones? See, same question.

If I hadn't wasted my time in this thread I could've just tried the fucking demos in that same time frame. Live and learn I guess.

It's just kind of a silly argument.

If I like Sci-fi shooters, I don't want just the best one. I want them all, because I like them. I will buy the new one because it is new, and as a good little consumer, I like new things. Especially if they're shiny. If you wait around all the time and never buy anything for fear that something better is coming, then you might as well kill yourself. (Not you specifically, Tan)

There's no argument. I asked as a casual shooter fan who may want to be impulsive and buy a mindless action game they know will be traded in later when something new comes out, which $60 sci-fi FPS game is the best on average on the PS3. Maybe casual means something different to everyone else but to me it means I'd dabble in a good game of that genre every once in a while. I certainly didn't say I was gung-ho for the genre. Hence the "all go bang, throw grenades and pretend there's a story" statement. I just wanted to know if the game was the nicest looking and best sounding on the PS3 at this time. Read my replies again folks, it was a simple question.

Maybe I should start a Killzone 2 thread and ask someone if this is the hottest FPS on the PS3 right now. ::)

Well it isn't out yet. :P

I think it's silly because we're all inventing these classes of people who don't exist.

I obviously haven't been communicating very well. Something I should work on perhaps.
Maybe you should, because everyone here had trouble with what you were saying.

Is KZ2 the biggest badass sci-fi shooter on PS3 or is there something better? That's it.
Yes it is:
Quote from: Wikipedia
Killzone 2 has been met with positive reviews. Based on 39 reviews, Killzone 2 currently holds a Metacritic score of 93/100 and 93% on Game Rankings based on 24 reviews.

If I hadn't wasted my time in this thread I could've just tried the fucking demos in that same time frame. Live and learn I guess.
That would've been the logical option indeed. A picture is worth a thousand words, right? Well the same goes for games.

I wasn't looking for return input on my communication skills. It was an introvertive thought nothing more. But thanks anyway, I can always rely on you to be completely tactless when the need arises.

I find Metacritic an unreliable source for scores. The scores cover everything from professional journalism, to blatant fanboys and biased paid for reviews. They hold no value in determining a game's quality. If I want opinions, I'll get them from people I know and trust, not nameless, possibly fabricated reviewers and those in the publishers pockets. Scores for that game range from (so far) 8 perfect scores of 100% all the way down to 80%. Some of the reviewers like G4TV, gave both Resistance games and Killzone 2 perfect 100's. That doesn't help at all. Resistance 2 goes from a perfect score all the way down to 60%.

Those ranges aren't consistent enough to rely on when it goes from "perfect game" down to "bargain bin shitter" for the same title.

I wanted to avoid downloading the demos on PSN, I find the process needlessly long and tedious as opposed to XBL. With all the time I wasted here, I still would have saved plenty compared to downloading 3 demos and installing each. Besides, FPS demos are hard to gauge, I was hoping for input from those who have beaten a few of them on the system.

I DL'd the demo from the European PSN yesterday.  Its shaping up to be a pretty kick ass game.  The demo was pretty short (only two small missions), but I liked it so far.  The lighting, blood spatter, and the details all make the visuals pop.  The controls work great, and seem to flow.  I highly recommend getting this demo if you have a PS3

Meh, I don't think the demo was  short, but rather it was perfect length. It gets you a good taste of the game and leaves you wanting more, as any good demo should do.

Is the PS3 under $200 yet?...I'll continue to wait. And the time it drops, KZ2 may be a $29.99 title.  :evilhappy:

This one is far, far, FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR better than the first game.

Also, the game's website is really cool. It's just as good as Bungie's Halo 3 site, which is really saying a lot. The stat tracking on Killzone.com is awesome, and you can view overhead replays of every match you've played in the game. Here's my profile on Killzone.com: http://www.killzone.com/kz/mykillzone.psml?kz_user_id=Tondog The other really neat thing is that when you find intel in the single player mode, you'll unlock new things on Killzone.com. Thumbs up to Guerrilla on the awesome site!

The game itself must be a lot different than the demo. I tried it a while ago and got bored before the demo even finished. I did however find my PS3 shooter fix, I picked up Unreal Tournament 3 for $19.99 new. March brings new maps and trophies to it so I'm happy. :)

The demo was good, but I still think the full game is better.

UT3's getting an update? Dang, I thought that game was dead. Now I'm glad I didn't sell it. So, we should play online sometime, Tan. :D

I'll have to test my PC headset and see how it works with my PS3. Hopefully they've fixed the chat problems as well.

That's thanks to the Titan mutator, an add-on that converts your kills into a sort of "rage meter" that sits in the lower-right corner of your screen. Fill up the meter, and you can activate Titan mode, whereby you triple in size and gain an ultra-powerful homing rocket launcher and AOE ground-pound that either stuns or dismembers your opponents depending on their proximity to you. You also quadruple your maximum health and armor, and when you're finally taken down, your corpse becomes a nuclear bomb that obliterates everything in the room.

If you're not taken down, however, things start to get a little ridiculous. Accumulate enough kills in Titan mode, and you turn into a Behemoth, a creature twice the size of a run-of-the-mill Titan with an even more powerful ground-stomp and 30 seconds of invincibility. After your 30 seconds is up, you're shrunk back down to mere Titanic proportions until your carcass finally explodes into an orb of fiery death.
:speechless: :speechless:

That sounds freaking awesome! And it's free?! With 16 new maps, trophies, and more? Wow. Thanks Epic! I just hope the patch has split screen support on PS3.

Tony and myself played multiplayer with a friend of mine the other day. We had a blast. I haven't touched another game since buying it, and I think that's bad as I really want to get through Dawn of War II.

Yeah, multiplayer is so much fun. Possibly the best I've played on a console. I just wish Killzone.com would start working properly.

It's pretty neat how they do that overhead replay thing, I was watching one of your matches...which seems creepy now that I think about it.

It's just the 2D top down view. So I don't know how bad it is for Sony to have to deal with all that data.
