Title: World's Tallest Bridge Opens

The worlds tallest bridge opened recently.  Check it out.  It's fairly awesome, and taller than the Sears Tower.

I've seen some pictures of that thing in newspapers this week. It looks very impressive, but I'd be afraid to death to drive over it.

I would definately love to drive over that.
Bet the view is amazing.

You should probably not look at the view though, if you do ever get a chance to drive over it.

Certainly looks impressive, though.  I'm sure you couldn't pay my dad enough money to get him to drive over it.  He has a horrible fear of all bridges.  The longer and/or taller they get, the less likely it is that he'll ever cross it in the driver's seat.  He can ride over them just fine, but for some reason can't handle driving over them.

I could never cross that bridge. Bridges don't scare me in general. I grew up with them, you need to cross many living in Pittsburgh.. That thing though, damn that's high! With my luck it would crash and go boom whilest I'm driving over it.

Semi-on topic but I'm not afraid of tunnels. I AM afraid of tunnels that go under water though. I had to go through such a tunnel to get to NYC and I thought I was going to die. I started hyperventilating, it was unpleasant.

I read it has a wall against winds, so I doubt there will be much of a view.

Dunno if this is true, but:

Quote
Motorists will now be able to pay a fee of 4.9 euros (6.5 dollars) to speed above the town.

That seems like a huge amount of money to pay just to be able to cross a stinking bridge, especially since they supposedly have the right to charge a toll for the next 75 years.

depends on how much time and gas you will save from going down the vallety and thru the town to the other side. You don't know that could be a bargain to some people.

It can save up to 2 hours. I'd pay 5 euros to save 2 hours.

I guess, but imagine if every highway in the world charged 5 Euros just to let you drive there.  It'd be ludicrous.  Sure, they save you lots of time, but that much money would pay for the cost of that bridge six times over.  Or, what about gas?  It would be worth it to most people to pay $7 a gallon, but if it cost that much in the U.S. (it does most other places), people would cry and whine and throw a fit.

I'm not really sure what your gas story is about, but I assume that a 2 hour save is well over 5 bucks worth of gas.

Gas here is about $1.80 a gallon.  My point was just that even if you can charge that much, it doesn't necessarily mean you should.  If you've ever been to Chicago you know what I mean.

Its more like if you have ever driven to Chicago.   I don't recall running into tolls much once we got to the city, but getting there was a huge (toll) pain.

We don't have tolls here.  We had one toll bridge here by Astoria (I think) but they stopped the toll a while ago.

That's one heck of a thin bridge deck, I don't really see how those fence walls are supposed to to dissipate the wind load exerted on the system. Perhaps those fences have such a weight so that it counter balances the wind load that would try to create torosion (undulation).  But I digress, what can I say I am a civil engineering major.

The bridge itself looks awesome, I really like the modern look of cable stay bridges, and boy is that thing long, it makes me wonder why they chose a cable stay design over a suspension.
