It's only the beginning as I see it. Soon most of the older cities are going to start doing the same thing. People are moving into the suberbs and city centers are becoming nothing but office buildings. Before you know it the offices are going to move to the suberbs so the suburbanites don't have such a long drive.

It's a ripple effect. The wave of the ripple is the growth of the suberbs; the middle, smooth part, of it is the dying cities. Hopefully the cities will be gradually dismantled and turned into parks or farms or what have you. If not you're going to get moldering ruins where all the bums live.

I think you are pretty much wrong on that one.
At least in Cincinnati's case, the downtown area is actually gaining population as some of the old buildings are being transformed into condos and apartments.  What seems to be happening now is the slums are slowly moving towards the suburbs.  You can already see this as parts of OTR are being gentrified, the people displaced by this are moving into Lower Price Hill and parts of The Heights.  But that is just what I have noticed, I don't have any real data to back it up.  I'll let TraderJake do that.

Actually George Lucas did take inspiration from the german army, if fact stormtrooper was translated from Sturmtruppen which was a term used for men trained as shock troops. Vader's helmet is a dead giveaway of that inspiration as well.
