With 2014 coming to a close and with many of us thinking about our favorite games that were played over the last 12 months, I wanted to take a slightly different approach and reflect upon my most cherished gaming and collecting memories.

I have to admit that 2014 was a pretty incredible year for me. I accomplished quite a bit, played loads of great games, and made some very nice additions to my collection.

Since January, I have completed 26 games, which is the most I've ever finished in my gaming career. I would never have imagined being able to discover this many games, let alone knock out such a large amount from my backlog. My feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment is great and I feel like I'm become a better gamer for it. Speaking of discovering games, this year I allowed myself to fully embrace PC gaming. That in and of itself was quite a surprise. If I had been told that I would attempt to build a gaming PC and sign up for GOG and Steam a couple of years ago, I would have laughed and brushed such an idea aside. 2014 saw a great diversification in my gaming and collecting habits and I'm very proud of that.

This year, I also learned not to scoff at reproduction carts or lament the games that were never released in the West. Buying a Retron 5 was probably the best decision I made this year and I'm looking forward to taking some Famicom and Super Famicom games for a test drive. Singlebanana will be happy to hear that I'll give his copy of Door Door a whirl soon.

Looks fun

This year I was also very involved in the Community Playthroughs, which, put simply, were so much fun. They helped introduce me to loads of new games and joining them helped to contribute to the 26 games I beat. These monthly events are fantastic and I'm so honored to give back to the community. This year the Playthroughs even evolved into a regular podcast with a well-operated social media presence. I've made great friends out of GrayGhost81, singlebanana and techwizard and enjoyed interacting with fellow gamers and collectors from all over the world. It's been a blast guys and I'm looking forward to 2015!

Over the course of the year, my collection surpassed 250 games. I can't believe my wall-o-games has grown so much! It's mind boggling to me to stand in front of a wall of games and realize how far I've come.

Here's to 2015! I hope everyone has a prosperous year. I hope you all reach your gaming and collecting goals, and most of all, I hope you all have fun!

See, now that's how you do it.  Short, sweet, and full of info.  You know what?  It was a great year watching you make all these discoveries.  I think back to the first time I played a Japanese game or when I built my first "gaming" PC and it makes me happy to know that you know (and will know) that kind of excitement.  Here's to another year of great gaming experiences and awesome collection additions.

Thanks Bomba! 2014 was a pretty good year and most of my best memories are a result of the community and my involvement here on RF.

Door Door and Far Cry 4 on an Xbox One in the same year? Winning.

I recall the Kacho playing Door Door on Game Center CX. It looked like something I'd like to try out myself, should I ever get the chance to do so.

On another note related to the topic: unless someone beats me to it, I'm going to initiate the "Your Top 5 Video Game Finds of 2014" thread some time after Christmas and before New Year's Day. Hope to see you there...

Happy New Year, good sir!  Glad it was a fun time.

I picked up the Super-Joy Famicom cart last CCAG and it has been a neat introduction to Fami games, including Door Door.  Fun little game, and like many of its ilk, quite challenging.
