Gargoyle's Quest was released by Capcom in May of 1990 in the west, just over a year after the Game Boy's Western launch. Konami had impressed shortly after launch, with Castlevania: The Adventure, at least visually and in terms of audio, but the game play left much to be desired, as it had been scaled back from its console counterparts and felt incomplete. Rather than trying to bring Ghosts 'n Goblins to the diminutive monochrome handheld, Capcom took a different approach, crafting a unique action game with some storytelling, and added light RPG elements, to make one of the system's finest releases. Watch my latest episode of Dramatic Readings! and see the game in action, while I talk in depth about the game's mechanics. Hopefully, you'll see just why this is such a special game!

Great review, thanks so much! I didn't realize that Demon's Crest for the SNES (one of my favorite SNES games since the day it was released) was so well prepared and influenced in gameplay mechanics and level design by this GB-game.

Intelligent review as always!

Fun looking game, and another that makes me wish I had a GB back in the day.  I don't think I noticed this game (and the NES sequel) until after I had played through Demon't Crest though (and by then I was exclusively riding that delicious wave of SNES titles).  Bummer, as judging by the gameplay I think I would like Gargoyle's Quest better than Demon's Crest.

The price isn't too bad, at least for loose (and for now).  There appears to be a bunch of people trying to artificially drive up the price, but it looks like the only (not bootleg) ones selling are around $20 USD shipped (on ebay).  That makes it about $40 for this and a SGB, which sounds about right to me.  Too bad the same cannot be said about the NES sequel.  Yikes, that is a lot of money.  I might have to wait until next year and get it digital or something.

Thanks for the review!

@lendelin: Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, Demon's Crest was preceded by this, and the sequel, Gargoyle's Quest 2, that was on the NES. I haven't played DC yet, but from what I understand, it moves back in the Ghouls direction a bit more, focusing almost entirely on the action, and cutting out the overhead world stuff, and lite RPG elements. I've heard it's a great game, though, so I hope to stumble across a copy some day.

@bombatomba: Yeah, I failed to grab Gargoyle's Quest 2 when it could be had on the cheap, but it's definitely one I'd like to snag at some point. $20 for the original GB game, however, is well worth the investment. As I said, it's probably a top 25 GB game, if not top 10. Thanks for watching and commenting!
