The thrill of competition. The satisfaction of victory. The sense of speed and the intense action. All reasons why racing games appeal to so many people. Whether it be in the air, land or sea racing comes in many forms and has been a staple of gaming since the 1970's. This new feature I call " List 'em" will be for me to list my top 5 games of a particular genre and all members are encouraged to respond in kind with their own top 5 list. Rebuttals, commentary and criticism are all welcome and I'd like to read your thoughts on them as well as add commentary of my own so list away ladies and gentlemen. Here's mine in no particular order: - Outrun 2019 (Sega Genesis) - A game I've only recently come to appreciate, it's got all the bells and whistles that the outrun series is known for, yet tackles that futuristic racing genre few games seem to pull off well. Check out my review HERE.
- Need for Speed: High Stakes (PlayStation, PC) - One of my favorite all-time games, this one takes high speed chases and offers you the keys to fast exotic cars or fast police interceptors and puts your into large tracks from around the world with car damage, lighting effects and Dolby Surround sound. It also has a mode called "High Stakes" in which you can race a second player for the pink slip to a car on your memory cards. The winner gets the data from the loser's memory card an they lose that car from their profile.
- Diddy Kong Racing (N64) - You can Mario Kart me this or Mario Kart me that, but to me this is the pinnacle of Kart racing. Even to this day I still enjoy this game and I have many fond memories of all-nighters spent in multiplayer matches or beating the single player mode. It's also a very easy game for new players or non-racing game fans to get into because it doesn't have the level of complexity that the other kart racing game has.
The DS remake isn't bad either but it's still not as good as it's N64 counterpart.
- Hang-On (Sega Master) - A low budget arcade port, this motorcycle game makes up for simple graphics and gameplay with an addictive need to rack up points and embark on an endurance marathon every time you play it. A game every SMS owner should have.
- Gran Turismo 2 (PlayStation) - No racing game has ever given me so much replay value nor offered many car owners the opportunity to modify and race cars they can actually afford and may even own. The limit of customization this game offers and the default list of cars is unmatched by any other game including it's own successors.
Runner-up: Hard Drivin' (sit down arcade cab). An awesome driving simulator, this game raised the bar for both arcade driving games and simulation racing games in general. One of the first racing games that had a clutch and a manual transmission that actually uses a proper shift pattern. It also has a "force feedback" steering wheel that has plenty of resistance when your driving and also rips out of your hands when you crash. Crashing also "cracks" your windshield and when the dust settles you get to watch a instant replay of your crash. I loved the stunt track and well...the whole game in general. I've even broken a couple machines with my brutal handling of the controls. Believe it or not this game is a great way to introduce someone to the practices of driving a manual transmission without risking a real car. If you get a chance check out the www.klov.com listing for Hard Drivin' HERE. Those are my top 5 my fellow members, now it's your turn.

1) Forza Motorsport 2 (Xbox 360) Great graphics (When they load properly) Great physics, great use of the analogue triggers, and lots of customisation options. It's not all about spending as much credits as you can upgrading the turbos. It has tournaments with rules, such as Class A, Class D, No turbos etc. There's also an optional racing line which shows up on the track if you aren't sure. But to discourage people from using it, the game gives less credits for using it. When I got Forza 1 on the Xbox I thought "Wow!" It was a huge step up from Gran Turismo 4. Better graphics, better gameplay, easier controls with the trigger instead of a poxy "analogue button" which seemed to be either on, off or middle.
2) Crash Team Racing (PS1) Much much better than Mario Kart 64 because it goes into depth. I never understood the appeal of MK64 because it's just so shallow. It has a few courses which you can race around and some battle arenas. CTR has that and more. Collect letters, like in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater... erm... well it's been seven years since I played it so I've forgotten what happens. But I know for sure it had more than Mario Kart 64.
3) Project Gotham Racing 3 (Xbox 360) Again, nice graphics, good use of the analogue triggers and a somewhat unique concept (if you don't count the previous two) At first I wasn't sure about the Cool Beans system. Once I started playing it I realised it's actually quite fun.
4) Outrun Europa (Sega Master System) Has all the fun of a classic 2D racer with built in guns. Very colourful for an 8bit system.
5) Mario Kart DS It FINALLY had power slides, after Double Dash. Crash Team Racing had power slides back in 1998 or so. MKDS also has all the tracks from every previous Mario Kart game.

Well My top five are

2)Gran Turismo 3 - PS2
3)Viper Racing - PC
4)Mario Kart - SNES
5)RC Pro AM

Nice lists guys, some awesome games there. Outrun Europa, now that sounds like a game I'll have to try out. I was going to get the Game Gear version but hell perhaps I'll pick up the PAL SMS version at some point instead.
Viper racing, now that sounds familiar. IIRC that's one of the few driving sims that uses the cltuch is it not? At the time it was a feature I thought would really take off and start having racing wheels to support it.

Let's see, I'd have to say my five favorites would be:
1 - Pole Position (Atari 5200) I never tire of this game and I think the 5200 controller is perfect for this port.
2 - Indy 500 (Atari 2600) Great fun even when restricted to the one player versions.
3 - Turbo (Colecovision) My first experience with a steering wheel controller for at home. Still haven't got that Coleco Telstar Arcade.
4 - Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat (NES) Always a blast to beat Danny to the finish line and max out all the options for your vehicle.
5 - Street Racer (Atari 2600) Not as exciting for single players but still a good time. Nice variety in all the games on the cart.

Funny you mention Turbo, I just had that out the other day for a spin.

After some thinking this morning I have to add Uniracers and Indy 500 to my list.
| |
In no particular order:
Interstate 76 - Not exactly racing, but close enough. Brilliant game.
Indianapolis 500: The Simulation - The original Papyrus sim.
Deathtrack - Fast, violent and fun.
Carmageddon - Come on, how could you not like this?
Colin Mcrae Rally 04 - It was a close call between this one and TOCA Race Driver 2, but TOCA loses points for its clunky plot insertion - victory to Colin.
All the above for the PC, of course.
Haven't picked up any recent racing sims; Colin Mcrae 04 and TOCA are the newest ones in the mix. Too much focus on graphical chrome, not enough on either a realistic driving experience or an immersive I76 adventure.

My list:
1. Uniracers (Hell yes!) 2. Kinetica 3. Ridge Racer 4 4. Crash Team Racing 5. F-Zero GX

Ah yes NFS for the 3DO, got me into 3D racing games that one did. Had a good long love affair with the NFS series until they started coming out with these urban street racers crapshoots. How I miss international cops & robbers type pursuit with day/night, weather, lighting effects and local language police forces.
| |
@Tan:
Gotta agree with you there Tan. I stopped with NFS games when they turned into those urban racer fast and the furious affairs. Although I did enjoy Burnout Paradise on the PS3 mainly because it's free roaming. I prefer the older style of NFS games though.
