Power supplies for consoles come in all shapes and sizes and anyone who games on retro consoles can tell you horror stories of trying to find the right one. Thanks to third parties it is easier than ever to find the right adapter. Today we will be looking at a versatile AC adapter manufactured by Power Plus that can be modified to support a large number of consoles.

The Power+ AC adapter has several features that make it better than the cheap AC adapters sold on eBay and Ali Express. For starters, it's UL listed. This guarantees that the innards are consistent and have been tested and verified. This translates to a consistent build quality and avoids cheap parts and manufacturing. The adapter can support up to 2 Amps meaning it can easily support more power hungry consoles such as a PCE Duo. The 6.5-foot long cord allows for breathing room and the reinforced stress points greatly reduce the chances of wire fraying or breaking. The 2.1mm x 5.5mm barrel plug connector is standard and allows for other barrel connectors to be connected. This gives the AC adapter it's adaptability to work with a variety of consoles. It must be recognized that the AC adapter is center positive and most video game consoles are center so an adapter will be needed.

So what can this AC adapter do with barrel connectors? When it's paired with Console 5's six-pack of DC Power Adapters quite a lot! This set treats the Power+ AC adapter as a universal power supply and comes with an adapter cord and 6 tips. These tips when used properly allow you to change the polarity to either center positive or center negative.  The following consoles can be powered using this kit:

Atari 2600, Atari 2600 (Heavy Sixer), Atari 2600 (Junior), Atari 2600 (Light Sixer), Atari 2600 (Vader), Atari 2600 (Woody), Atari 5200, Atari 5200 (2 Port), Atari 5200 (4 Port), Atari Jaguar, Atari Jaguar CD, Atari Lynx, Atari Lynx v1, Atari Lynx v2, Atari Pong (Various), Coleco Telstar (Various), Magnavox Odyssey Pong Systems (Various), Magnavox Odyssey2, NEC PC Engine, NEC PC Engine Core Grafx, NEC PC Engine Core Grafx II (2), NEC PC Engine CD-ROM2, NEC PC Engine Duo-R, NEC PC Engine Duo-RX, NEC PC Engine GT, NEC TurboBooster Plus, NEC TurboExpress, NEC TurboGrafx CD Dock, NEC TurboGrafx CD-ROM Drive, NEC TurboGrafx-16, Nintendo Famicom Disk System, Nintendo Game Boy (DMG-01), Nintendo NES, Nintendo NES Front Loader, Nintendo NES Top Loader, Sega 32X, Sega CD, Sega CD v1, Sega CD v2, Sega CDX, Sega Game Gear, Sega Game Gear VA1 837-7719, Sega Game Gear VA1 837-9024, Sega Game Gear VA4 837-9537, Sega Game Gear VA5 837-10766, Sega Game Gear 1.71-7923A, Sega Genesis v1, Sega Genesis v2, Sega Genesis v3, Sega Master System, Sega Master System v1, Sega Master System v2, Sega Nomad, Sharp Twin Famicom, Tiger Game.com

Just want to add that you cannot use a 9V AC adapter like that with the Twin Famicom. The Twin Famicom's power board is very sensitive to input voltage and if it exceeds 7.5V, it could cause damage; I accidentally used a 9V adapter with mine and it wound up frying a chip inside the disk drive. I personally use a PSone PSU with a homemade tip adapter on my Twin Fami and it works great.

This article is super helpful, thanks for compiling this information! I've already added the Power Plus adapter to my Amazon cart, and will be ordering a set of the adapter plugs post-haste. This will solve my NES power problem, and should give me more flexibility with my other systems as well, though since I have them spread out across multiple TV's, I might end up needing to buy 3 or 4 sets of these. Still, a good investment in the long run.

@ApolloBoy: Thanks for the information! I'm using one of these set to 7.5 on mine.

@MetalFRO: Just be sure to research first and make sure you set the tip as center negative or center positive accordingly.
