Let me be up front to start- I know I'm the Top 20 guy, but admittedly the Christmas season got away from me, as well as a hectic start to the new year. If you're looking for a new top 20, then take a look at the newest thread for more info, should be a lot of fun. You can find that link here- http://www.rfgeneration.c...topic=19486.msg276303#new

But with not having a top 20 to post for January, I thought it would be fun to talk about my recent experience with Planet Coaster: Console Edition, released in November by Frontier Games.

The Yakuza series has been around for quite some time. The first game dates back to the later years of the Playstation 2, and the 7th main game in the series recently released in Japan and is set to come to the West soon. All the regular releases, plus the spinoffs, prequel, and slowly releasing remakes and upcoming remasters make Yakuza one of the most actively developed video games series to date. [iYakuza 6[/i] was developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and published by Sega for Sony's Playstation 4. It was originally released in 2016 in Japan. A worldwide release followed two years later in 2018. This long running series has quickly been gaining popularity in the West, which has mostly been propelled by the prequel Yakuza 0. Sega's been spacing out the timing of their Yakuza releases, so the market does not become overwhelmed by constant releases as the West gets caught up with the main story on top of the remakes.

Death Mark is a horror visual novel released in June 2017 in Japan. It was released in the West on Halloween in 2018. This game was originally released on the Playstation Vita and had later released on the Playstation 4 and Nintendo Switch in Japan. When the game came to the West, the game launched simultaneously on all three of those platforms, followed by a later PC release in April 2019. A few months after this PC release the title was rebranded and became Spirit Hunter: Death Mark. Due to the confusion this could cause, the original name is being used for this review.

Death Mark was developed by Experience Inc. an obscure Japanese developer that was founded after another obscure developer named Michaelsoft went bankrupt. Michaelsoft developed a couple of Wizardry dungeon crawling spinoffs in the mid-2000s on the Playstation 2 before they folded. Until Death Mark, Experience had also only made dungeon crawlers, with their most successful game being Demon Gaze for the Vita.

2017 was a very weird year for me. I was in a funk for much of the year and not really enjoying any of the things that I used to love so much. I wasn't happy running my game store, I didn't want to air guitar to my favorite bands, I wasn't exercising or eating healthy like I typically do, I wasn't watching cool sci-fi movies or TV shows, I wasn't reading any new comics, I wasn't socializing much if at all most months, and for the first time I can ever remember I didn't really have a desire to play games when I had the chance. It was a lame year and 2018 started off just as depressing. Early in 2018 though I was able to get control of my mind once again and make some important changes in my life that made me start to appreciate things again and see the joy in all the things I used to love so very much.

In 2005, Capcom released Dead Rising for the Xbox 360. Capcom made their entry into the world of High Definition gaming a memorable one, as Dead Rising was like no other game before it. There were a few years around and following the release of Dead Rising where zombies would rule the roost, as games from both large developers like Capcom themselves, Valve, and Activision, had games or popular game modes that had a heavy emphasis on zombies. This popularity also coincided with the rise of indie games on the PC market, and zombie games thrived there for a few years until fatigue inevitably set in. Most of the biggest zombie games and modes were first person shooters, whether it was Nazi Zombies from Treyarch's Call of Duty games, Left 4 Dead, or Killing Floor, running around and shooting zombies made quite a bit of sense.

Capcom is not known for first person shooters, and instead designed Dead Rising in a completely different manner based around what it did know and had recently experimented with. Dead Rising has a third person perspective where combat is more focused around melee weapons. Guns do exist, but they are clumsy to aim and not particularly powerful until the player has completed one of the most difficult challenges in the game, which unlocks the most powerful gun, and overall weapon, in Dead Rising.

2B holding 9S with a 3rd character you don't need to know about yet.

The year is 2003. The PlayStation 2 is lighting up sales charts the likes of which no console had ever seen before. It was now a few years into the console's lifecycle, so games were starting to really flood the market. Square Enix released a game called Drakengard, the first game directed by a now well known eccentric, Yoko Taro. One of the design elements of the game included multiple endings, one of which seems rather nonsensical at first. (The following will include heavy spoilers to one of Drakengard's endings, and the reason for this detailed description will follow soon after.)

If you've paid attention to my gaming tastes over the years, it would likely be easy to peg me as a guy who loves old school, action games. I'm super comfortable with platformers, fighters, shmups, run 'n guns, and I've also got a soft spot for JRPGs. I tend to talk about these types of games the most, but there are some extremely modern genres that I enjoy just as much as those I grew up with. In this case, it's a the decision based, cinematic, story driven game Detroit Become Human. I have yet to play Indigo Prophecy, but have drawn a great deal of enjoyment out of Quantic Dreams previous titles, Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls. Based on my past experience with these two titles, as well as the intriguing setting of a near-future, pre-sci-fi world in which Androids have become common place in the homes and work forces around the U.S., I had no hesitation picking this one up day one to dig into.

According to the Playcast crew, they've knocked it out of the park with their January and February game picks this year. So, how did their March game fair?  In this month's Playcast, Rich (singlebanana), Shawn (GrayGhost81) and returning guest, Retro Fandango's own, Kevin (BuriedOnMars) discuss the nostalgia driven, hack 'n slash brawler Transformers: Devastation, which appeared on various 7th and 8th generation consoles. Not only do the guys review the game, but they also discuss the impact the Transformers animated series and toy-line had on their adolescence, including a very special segment dedicated to Transformers: The Movie. Is this game worth playing, or is it merely an effort to loose our purse strings with G1 nostalgia? If you're a fan of Transformers, then you definitely will not want to miss this episode of the RF Generation Playcast!

Our 50th episode is only two shows away and we want YOU to send us an audio roast! Congrats, well wishes, and cheap shots are all welcome. Audio should be limited to under 2 minutes, so if you're interested, please contact singlebanana to find out how to send in your piece.

Well, this Dragon 32/64 game is certainly off everyone's radar, but I don't have a Dragon 32.  Or the Cassette Drive.  Or British.

Being in video game retail for so many years now, I can easily say one of my favorite parts of the job is finding and recommending obscure titles to customers who had no idea such games existed.  I love digging up and collecting gaming oddities myself, and every time I find a list of such titles I bookmark them to compile and search for later.  When I thought I'd have the time to keep it up, I originally started a forum to track these, but it turns out I can't get to it nearly often enough to keep it relevant. (Sorry!)

Hopefully I'm not alone here on this, so in that spirit here's another list for those interested:

It's a new year and with that comes New Year's resolutions.  In January, the Playcast Crew resolved to play Night School Studio's indie darling, Oxenfree.  In this month's Playcast join hosts, Rich (singlebanana) and Shawn (GrayGhost81) as they discuss the game's story, its mechanics, the music and sound, and get super philosophically deep into the game's overarching question: "If you could go back and change a decision in your life, would you?".  In this episode, the guys also discuss their gaming related New Year's resolutions, their thoughts on Nintendo's latest creation, Nintendo Labo, and their current literary consuming endeavors.  How does Oxenfree compare to other freedom of choice titles like those developed by Telltale Games?  What's in the game's title?  And what "weird" hang-up does Rich have when it comes to playing remakes? The answer to these questions and many more in this month's episode of the RF Generation Playcast. You won't want to miss it!

Some of you may have noticed that this episode has arrived a bit earlier than usual.  The reason is because our good friend and site member, Kevin (Buried_on_Mars), who some of you may know from the show or follow his podcast Retro Fandango, is doing a 48 hour Twitch charity fundraiser this weekend.  Shawn and I discuss the fundraiser on the show and we wanted to make sure to get the word out to our listeners in time, since the broadcast is this weekend.  Please be sure to listen to this portion of the show and to learn more about Kevin's goal, please check out the following link: https://buriedonmars.word...ream-on-february-10-11th/

After they hyped up fever dream that was Far Cry 3, I really had high hopes for the sequel to one of my favorite gaming experiences in recent memory. I was met with the mixed bag that is Far Cry 4, and somehow I'm not surprised that Ubisoft dropped the ball again...but not in the way they usually do.
