Overview:

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons: Pool of Radiance is the first game in the venerable "Gold Box" series of computer role playing game (CRPG). It set many standards for other CRPGs at the time, as well as for other games in the series.

You play a set of adventurers who are hired by the city council of the city of Phlan to clean out the monster-infested sections of the old parts of the city. There are a number of side-quests to tackle, as well as mysteries and puzzles to solve.

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons: Pool of Radiance features first-person, tile-based movement, while battle are turn-based and played out on a separate screen, which features strategic attacking and defensive maneuvers.

The story is told partially through static cut scenes but primarily through the included Adventurer's Journal. When the game comes to a story point, it will often reference a page and paragraph number in the Journal that goes with the scene.

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons: Pool of Radiance uses a code wheel for copy protection, which requires the player to match up properly or the game will no longer be playable and require a restart.

There are several differences to this variation of the game due to the space limitations of the tape medium (from the cassette adendum):

  • High scores cannot be saved and the save and restore feature is not included
  • The maze route is omitted
  • There is no waterfall picture
  • You cannot return from one zone to another
  • The same character graphics are used for all 8 characters
