Title: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: techwizard on January 01, 2014, 04:43:40 AM This new-fangled year of 2014 is off to a mischievous start with Mischief Makers for Nintendo 64! The votes are in and though it was a tie between this and Paper Mario, the Community Playthrough hosts broke it with this great hidden gem. Paper Mario will definitely be on the back burner for a future playthrough. :)

Count me in!

Game's ~5 hours long total for your first playthrough. Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: singlebanana on January 03, 2014, 03:39:57 PM I'm in for sure. :)
Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: Fleach on January 04, 2014, 07:58:55 PM If the game is roughly 5 hours long maybe a speedrun would be a good achievement?
Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on January 05, 2014, 12:41:06 AM Existing speedrun is just under an hour. I'd say under 3 would probably be a good starter, possibly under 2.
Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: techwizard on January 07, 2014, 02:17:17 AM alright everything is updated on the first post! really sorry for the delay, i've been pretty busy.
Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: singlebanana on January 07, 2014, 08:46:58 AM No worries. Looks like some fun achievements. I plan on getting started tonight.
Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: Disposed Hero on January 08, 2014, 01:46:42 PM Has anybody else been playing this? I played the first few levels and still don't feel like I know what this game is about. I went into this playthrough blind with no prior knowledge of the game. Before playing it, I thought it would be a 3D platformer, then right after starting it I thought it would be a sidescrolling shooter similar to Mega Man, but turns out it's a 2D platformer. At least, that's my impression for now. It could change yet again after another level or two. ;)
I found the first couple of levels really boring since nothing really happens and it's mostly just tutorials. It got better with the next couple of levels though. I'm still only half way through the first world, so I feel like I still haven't seen much of what the game has to offer. Controls take some getting used to, although I'm sure the clumsy N64 controller isn't helping, but I think I'm finally starting to grasp it. Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: singlebanana on January 08, 2014, 02:18:23 PM I played last night and made it to level 2-2. I'm still trying to get a grip on the controls and am having a bit of a problem with elevating my jumps after grabbing onto the face/ball thingys. Yeah, the story is kind of quick and without a lot of familiarity with the controls, I seem to be leaving quite a lot of gems behind every level. I did enjoy the boss fight with the worm though. :)
At this point, my goal is to playthrough without achievements in mind and come back for those after I get a better handle on the controls. I will go ahead and say that the N64 is not my favorite system and as a result, I'm very new to the controls. I'm interested to see how this plays out for me and hope to gain a better appreciation for this game and the system as this playthrough moves along. :) Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on January 08, 2014, 02:57:33 PM The story will develop as you play through the worlds.
Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: techwizard on January 09, 2014, 04:03:54 PM finished World 1 last night! i'm glad it didn't take long because i felt bad about changing week 1's checkpoint with only a couple days left. i'm considering week 2 as starting now because week 1 started on a wednesday :)
Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: techwizard on January 13, 2014, 10:05:57 PM how's everyone doing on this one? do we have anymore participants that want to get in on it? there were 5 votes in favour of it but only 3 people listed as playing so far.
i did a level or 2 of world 2 over the weekend (was busy with friends) but i plan on putting in some more time tonight. really enjoying it so far, and i see what you mean about shake shake shadow Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: Disposed Hero on January 14, 2014, 08:49:24 AM I spent a little bit of time with this last night. I'm still not quite finished with World 1 yet, but I'm starting to warm up to this game a bit. Levels 1-6 and 1-7 were a refreshing change of pace from the previous levels. I'll try to spend some more time with this game tonight or tomorrow.
Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: Shadow Kisuragi on January 14, 2014, 10:26:43 AM SHAKE SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE... Heheheh.
I'll join in with you guys in the next couple days if possible. The main reason I haven't been playing along is that the controller will bother my wife and she's hard at work, so I've been trying to keep her in mind when playing things in the room. I guess HA and YEAH might be the ones you hear more, but that's the one that sticks with you. TRY TO THE NEXT LEVEL. Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: Disposed Hero on January 17, 2014, 12:33:56 PM Sorry, I keep meaning to come back to this game, but most of my gaming time lately has been going to Wind Waker. Rest assured, I will beat this game by the end of the month! ;)
Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: techwizard on January 20, 2014, 12:19:48 AM made some progress on world 4 over the weekend, going to do a little more tonight and will try to remember to add in my times for the high score stuff
Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: Disposed Hero on January 20, 2014, 09:02:12 AM I made some time for this one last night. Finished World 1 and played about half of World 2. One thing I can say about this game is that it is very unique and almost every level so far has felt different from every level before it.

Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: Disposed Hero on January 27, 2014, 09:09:51 AM I finished this game over the weekend. This is without a doubt one of the most unique and creative games I've played in a long time. I had some frustrations with it due to some control issues and the sometimes less than obvious solutions to levels and boss fights, but overall I enjoyed it quite a bit. I probably never would have played this game otherwise, so thanks for choosing it for the community playthrough :)

Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: Stigzilla on January 28, 2014, 04:31:55 PM So I guess mark me down as a participant, since I got this game Saturday, and had beaten World 4 by Sunday night. I'll probably put some more time in to it tonight when I get home from work and hopefully beat it.
Also first post in probably more than a year, it's been a long time. entries and completed achievements: #2 = red gems: 298 #3 = #5 #6 = 4h28m01s12 - C Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: Stigzilla on January 31, 2014, 04:44:51 AM Haha! Beat it! The first four worlds of the game did nothing to prepare me for the sheer...frustration of the multiple bosses of the last world.
Finished with 687 red gems, and 26 gold gems. And now I get to prepare myself for the month that is Kingdom Hearts and Parasite Eve! Title: Re: January Retro Community Playthrough - Mischief Makers Post by: Disposed Hero on January 31, 2014, 08:45:47 AM I may post some pics of my scores later, but I already know that you both crushed me as far as gems go.
