Useful post regardless. Thank you. You are probably right. Duel Masters is a borderline case. Turn-based and other RPG elements, but lacking in a true leveling-up-system we usually expect from a RPG. Lacking a commonly agreed definition of a RPG, I kept it in the main list because I wanted to keep the recommendation character of the list. By no means are these papal lists, everyone is free to add or remove games based on their individual view what a RPG is and is not. Title: Re: Complete RPG List for the PS2 Post by: lendelin on February 01, 2018, 05:56:24 PM I love this, I think i have most of them already. I'll have to check I have only one goal when it comes to 'complete' collections, and that is from the PS1 on a complete collection of RPGs for the dominant RPG-console, which are all the Playstations until today (PS4 will be THE RPG-console as well). For the other consoles I have the exclusives titles. I started this list more than a decade ago just because I wanted t make sure that I don't miss a RPG. I got for the PS2 all the games (with variants and limited editions) ten years ago already, and didn't pay a lot for them at all. I always wait until games drop significantly in price. For the PS3 I'm in the process to get all the RPG-variants and limited editions, but it's tough because there are many more limited editions than on the PS2. (I'm a cheapskate.) For the PS4 I gave completely up to collect special editions. The reasons: 1. Way too many, 2. too expensive and overpriced, 3. ebay scalping. The combination of all three reasons makes collecting an umpleasant experience. I just refuse to pay 200 bucks for a Ni No Kuni II with its content. Another example of a way overpriced LE. In the PS2 era i could wait a long time until a LE dropped in price and Toys R US or Circuit City or Best Buy sold it for twenty or ten dollars, but those times are over. The LE of Tales of Berseria is a good example. Sold out and immediately goes the way of ebay scalping with little prospect to come down in price. Title: Re: Complete RPG List for the PS2 Post by: shaggy on February 02, 2018, 01:56:33 PM Man, that's a lot of RPG's and one of the reasons I love the PS2 so much!
Title: Re: Complete RPG List for the PS2 Post by: Addicted on February 02, 2018, 02:18:48 PM Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. Soundtrack CD edition and standard edition (SLUS 20911), both in regular game cases. The edition without the CD might be a second printing. The front covers and spines of the two versions are identical. The versions have different back covers. The edition with the CD has "Includes Limited Edition Soundtrack CD!" on the back cover.
You are correct that the edition without the CD is a second printing. - Original version had a Soundtrack CD. - Original version's disc case was obviously designed with one of those extra disc carrying pieces you can clip into the case, for the soundtrack. - Reprint has Black&White manual with color cover. - The backside of the cover art has a little bit which says "INCLUDES SOUNDTRACK CD" in the original. Not there in the reprint. I believe the reprint was done by https://www.videogamesplus.ca who also did the Infinite Space reprint. Title: Re: Complete RPG List for the PS2 Post by: lendelin on February 02, 2018, 08:34:14 PM Man, that's a lot of RPG's and one of the reasons I love the PS2 so much! Impressive are the number of exclusive titles as well. 80% of the RPGs listed are exclusive to the PS2. If you didn't have a PS2 as a RPGamer you truly missed out. I had some doubts about the PS3 as the dominant console for RPGs during the first years of the PS3/Xbox360 times. Microsoft made an impressive effort to get a foothold in the Japanese market with exclusive RPGs like Tales of Vesperia, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant and Magna Carta 2. As sales numbers for the console didn't improve, they gave up this effort very fast. You are correct about the characteristics and differences of the two versions. I should have mentioned additionally the difference of the manuals, I will change the entry in the variants-section accordingly. Back then when I did the lists some people maintained (or weren't sure) that the game without the soundtrack CD wasnt' a second printing but was sold this way as a variant from the getgo. I couldn't find out if that was the case or not. If you are sure that the game without the CD was indeed a second printing I will change the text accordingly. I made the lists more than ten years ago, I don't know what happened. The devil must have whispered in my ear! :) Thank you so much! I'll remove the title from the 'Multiple Platforms'-section. The Greatest hits versions of Kingdom Hearts 2, and probably 1 and Chain of Memories, which are still sold by SE, don't have the special metallic embossing thing. If you look at an OG copy of these games you'll see what I mean.

If you look at an OG copy of these games you'll see what I mean. Yep, the glossy emblazoned covers of all three Kingdom Hearts games were never replicated for their Greatest Hits versions. I remember that when they were released back in the day. I have only the original releases since I don't collect the GH releases. Title: Re: Complete RPG List for the PS2 Post by: lendelin on February 24, 2019, 10:18:19 AM Seek and Destroy.* Takara/Conspiracy Entertainment, Barnhouse Effect, 12/11/02.
I added this game to the RPG-borderline category. The game is part of the penny racer series like 'Choroq' and 'Everywhere Road Trip' which are already in this category. Like the latter games, this hybrid-game emphasizes RPG elements like options for upgrading the tanks (level-up-system) and their customizations, missions and side missions, and additionally humanizes machines which become characters of the game. The tanks can talk to each other and help each other out and there are even slight character developments of the tanks. All of the above make this game a justified contribution to the borderline section. The game has been on my shelvers for over 15 years and I never looked at it. In the last couple of days I played it and I have to say that it was surprisingly fun. While the graphics are certainly below the standard PS2-graphics at the time, the gameplay is straightforward, simple, varied and the RPG-elements make it unique like Choroq and Everywhere Road Trip. Certainly worth checking it out and not just a game for the shelves. Title: Re: Complete RPG List for the PS2 Post by: lendelin on May 11, 2022, 04:30:51 PM Ring of Red.* Konami Studios, Konami, 3/12/01.
After all those years (I finished the list already in 2009) I discovered the above game I missed. I added it to the main alphabetical list. It is a tactical-strategy RPG in the tradition of Front Mission, developed and published by Konami, with rather unique elements of the battle system and worthwhile playing. I never thought that a console would get more RPGs than the PS2. (140 now) The PS4, however, surpassed it some time ago and has now well over 300 RPGs already. Who would have thought? |
