Title: The much needed concert thread.
Post by: BadEnoughDude on December 23, 2007, 08:01:01 PM
Figured that this was a long time coming. See a good show last night? Excited for a big rock concert? Let everyone know!

I took in the Heiruspecs 10th anniversary show last night. Very entertaining local hip-hop group. They brought back their horn section and had a number of special guests (P.O.S. being the biggest name) throughout the night. Counted as many as 12 people on stage together, which is mighty impressive given that the stage is tiny. Combine that with PBR tall boys and you have a great Minnesota hip-hop show :)

(high-five to myself for 350)

The last show I went to was when Mastadon and Against me! came to Portland, a weird ass pair but both bands kicked ass so it was an awesome show.  Then before that was GWAR.  Again fucking awesome.

The last show I went to was back in March, I saw Explosions In The Sky play @ Webster Hall in NYC. I heard that Converge is playing at Purchase College in April, I wanna try and make it up there for that.

Explosions in the Sky is terrific live. One of the better shows I saw this year.

Went out with my dad on Saturday to see Boyd Lee and Joe Cruz. Simple little 3 piece with an acoustic guitar, mandolin and a harmonica (and a bit of percussion, of course). We have seen them probably a half-dozen times now. They are quite enjoyable live.

I went to my first ever concert in august. The Smackdown + Sista Sekunden + Aktieklubben, which are all hardcore bands. Had a really fun time I might add.

I saw Rob Zombie and Godsmak Nov 2006. Both of those bands kick ass live.

I was supposed to go see a free acoustic Nada Surf show on Tuesday, but it didn't happen. Was also supposed to go see Brian Just last night, and that didn't happen either.

I need to get back in the saddle. It's been a few weeks since my last show.

I found out this morning that Lynyrd Skynyrd is coming to the county fair later this summer. I am so happy about this, I'm going to be one of the first for tickets. I really hope they play more of their older songs than the new country stuff they've been doing lately.

With most of the original band including the lead singer being dead due to various causes over the last 30 years, you wonder how much Skynyrd is actually left in Lynyrd.  :P

They've still got a couple members that have been there since the beginning. But Skynyrd has always been changing members, I don't think they've had the same member for more than a year or two at a time.
As long as they play Free Bird, I'll be happy no matter who is performing :P

I've just got back from Australian Pink Floyd. They were brilliant like last year but we were at the very back row, on the top balcony. We could see the stage and everyone on it but only half the projection screen. The sound system was set up well. The light show was impressive. Very good over all. :D :D

A drunk man near us was comatose for two hours through it. No one could wake him up then when he did he got thrown out. Apparently he had gone for a meal with his wife and had "three bottles of wine". ::)

Over the last 2 or 3 weeks, I have seen:

The Crush
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone
Nada Surf
Doomtree
The Black Keys

This Wednesday is Wilco, and Friday is Sly and the Family Stone.

I've got tickets to see Judas Priest (All time favortie band) at the end of July and also tickets for Alice Cooper near the end of September. I've seen Alice in concert before but it really rocked and I get to take my wife to enjoy it with me this time.

I think Testament is opening for Priest which is mediocre since they are also touring with Iced Earth and Iron Maiden in other countires. If only one of them could have followed Priest into Canada I would throw up I'd be so excited.

I'm not sure who is opening for Alice Cooper but the last time I saw him (like 3 years ago) he was touring with a no name bar band so its possible hes doing the same since I didnt see anyone listed with him on ticketmaster.

Oh yeah, saw The New Pornographers and Okkervil River about 2 weeks ago. It was fairly awesome. I had no idea The New Pornographers could sell out venues. Anyway, what was really awesome is that Okkervil River (if you don't know is an extremely good obscure indie band) had a lot of people talking during the beginning of their show and by the end everyone was having a great time listening to their music. Really cool stuff.

I saw Okkervil River a couple years ago when the opened for The Decemberists. I liked them very much.

And yeah, The New Pornographers are a supergroup! They could sell out venues pretty much anywhere. Was Neko Case touring with them?

A couple weeks ago I went to see My Chemical Romance, Billy Talent and Drive By at the Fillmore in Detroit. We had main floor which freaked my wife out a bit. Next week I'm going to see Ministry.

Judas Priest is coming to Detroit too. Testament and Motorhead are also on the bill. I'd like to go to that one.

Yup Neko was with them. And I suppose I didn't think they'd appeal to as big of a variety of people as they do. Really good band though.

Tomorrow is the "Take Back Labor Day" concert on Harriet Island in St. Paul. Coincidentally, it happens to take place on the first night of the Republican National Convention, which will be taking place only blocks away at the Xcel Center. I have a feeling that there was some under the table work to get this one done :)

At any rate, Atmosphere, Mos Def, Tom Morello and Steve Earle will all be performing, and it's only $10. Should be pretty damn fun!

I've turned down about 5 offers to go to this show already.

I like Alkaline Trio, but I think I've seen them 5 times already. I have no interest at all in the rest of them, or the venue they are playing (The Myth).

I went to the Lynyrd Skynyrd concert at our County Fair last night. Absolutely amazing show, the sound was perfect, much better than the Foreigner concert last year. We were maybe 100 feet from the stage and it was so awesome being to able to watch the guitar players do their magic. They only played 6-7 songs, but the tickets were only $30, so I was satisfied. The show lasted exactly 1 hour plus Free Bird for an encore. I loved how after the last song, the lights went off and a lot of people left because they thought the show was over.

Finally getting around to posting some pictures from the Skynyrd concert. I made sure before I went I cleared all the images off my card and put them on my laptop so I'd plenty of room for pictures. But once I got there, I realized I left my damn card in the laptop, so I had only the camera's built in memory, which was full, so I had to delete everything on it.

The photos came out awful, this was the best of the three.

Any one have some tips for taking pictures at concerts?

I also did a little video since the photos were coming out so bad.

Will be seeing Rise Against, Thrice, Alkaline Trio and Gaslight Anthem in KC in November.

Willingly admitting that the tour would be  much better four years ago with Strike Anywhere instead of Gaslight Anthem, it still will be an awesome show me thinks. Worth the 2 1/2 hour drive from Omaha.

Manchester tickets went on general sale 10am yesterday and of course I was on Ticketmaster the second they were available :P  Managed to get some - lower tier seated with full view, I hate the standing section at the MEN - for £40 each plus all the booking fee nonsense.  Extortionate but better than paying hundreds on ebay!

They've probably all sold out by now. I heard the Dublin show sold out in less than 5 minutes...  :o

That's actually not as bad as I was expecting. Maybe it's just because the O2 is London and London is crappy so they charge more for the inconvenience of being in a crappy place. The cheapest London tickets were £100, I think.

Australian Pink Floyd were about £27, but damn it, they were good!

Title: Re: The much needed concert thread.
Post by: totalgridlock on October 19, 2008, 06:42:10 AM
Yeah, London always charges more for some reason. Can't think why. London is indeed a crappy place.

I had a quick look on eBay just to see how much tickets were going for (for bragging rights, of course). A pair not too far from my own seats at the MEN sold for nearly £400!  A pair of standing tickets for the O2 sold for £3,100!!! That's just mad.

£40 is still quite a lot though.  That's £80 for a pair, plus £13 in booking fees (which I reckon should be illegal) and postage.  I think that's about the most I've ever paid for concert tickets... except for Aerosmith in Hyde Park which was about £50 a ticket, but that's acceptable because it's Aerosmith (my favourite band).

I went to the New Theatre in Oxford after work today but the only seats available for Australian Pink Floyd were limited visibility. i.e. right on the edges. :(  Same price, of course. We didn't bother getting tickets.

I wouldn't have been so bothered if we hadn't had to stop in the most disgusting car park ever. It was an underground pay-and-display where they charged £3 for one hour. :o We were only there for five to ten minutes. ::) The lanes were very tight, so I hit the kerb on corners a couple of times. It was dark, damp and smelly. There were lots of signs warning of how you would be fined £100 for not being entirely inside the miniscule parking spaces, or £500 for not displaying a ticket. They had a rising ramp on the entrance and exit for whatever stupid reason, but the lanes to line up with the sensor were extremely tight. If I moved further ahead to swing around, I would have hit a bollard, if I swung around sooner I would have hit the kerb. I actually ended up doing a three point turn to get the right angle. Then the sensor wouldn't drop the ramp because I had to be within 2mm of hitting the ramp.

What a God-awful car park. >:(
