I am looking to buy some new video game consoles but I dont know which ones I should buy and which I should just ignore and not search for.

SNES
Nintendo 64
Gamecube
Gameboy Color
Gameboy Advance SP
Dreamcast
Intellivision

So what other consoles should I purchase.  I don't want a console if all I get is a half dozen games that are impossible to find.

Need is a strong word; I don't think you need any of these to survive.

On the other hand; do you want 'next-gen' graphics, or does it not matter?

I would say SNES, only because I think it's my favorite console of all time -- I don't think a lot of people would dispute that it's a great console.

I like the 360 though as well; is a PS3 out of the question?

But if you want some good consoles, I would say that the NES, Atari 2600, and the Sega Genesis are must haves for any classic gamer.  ;)

Yeah I shouldn't have put need. 

Next-gen graphics are not needed and yes, PS3 is out of the question.

PS2 is almost completely backwards compatible, it isn't perfect though. Some games come off worse for ware, but I don't know of any games that simply don't work.

A Nomad is friken awesome, Take it with you or plug it into your TV at home. Even has a control port for another control. It isn't light though, and you will want some super heavy duty batteries. Genesis games look much better on the Nomad's small screen, and some fake transparency effects such as very rapid blinking actually becomes a true transparency effect on the small screen for whatever reason. Really cool stuff.

A Genesis (or Nomad) and a SNES will take you back to the golden age of gaming, and will have you locked away for a long time :)
It is also a lot better to collect cartridge games than CD/DVD ones off of eBay though for obvious reasons.

PS2...definitely. Especially since you don't have PS1 and PS2. You're missing out on two of the best systems ever.

Regarding your question about backwards compatibility, I found this list on Wikipedia that should help you out:

Definitely get a Sega Genesis.

That list is fairly accurate but YMMV. I have several of the games on that list and an older Slim model and they work perfectly fine. Final Fantasy VIII which isn't on that list has a couple graphical glitches but nothing game breaking.

Still, of 1500 or so games you could have for the PS1, it's a very small list. The disc drive speed increase and enhanced graphic smoothing more than make up for it.

Seconded. I don't have a Genesis, but I really do want to get one someday because there are a lot of gems on that system.

Don't get an 'oddyssey'.  It's to hardcore, at least for me.

I would have said a Wii, but that falls above your $150 cap off. It is worth it, just something to mull over.

I would definitely agree with most here and say PS2 though. Lots of great games.

If you're looking for an oldschool console (you already have the SNES): NES or Genesis.

I agree with ganonbanned: Don't get a very specific (and very old) console like the Odyssey or Collecovision before getting the true classics. (with classic I don't mean old). There's nothing wrong with getting the "mainstream" consoles of back in the day first before jumping into the really rare stuff.

To help, I've decided to add my pearls of wisdom.  You need to buy my extra systems.  If you buy them, you'll have plenty of game systems, I'll have your money, and we'll both come out happy.  It's win win here.  Realy, there is nothing else you need to think about, just buy my extras.
