Title: Playstation Plus (PS+) Discussion Thread
Post by: GrayGhost81 on June 09, 2013, 08:24:22 PM
I thought it would be a cool idea to make a thread to talk about the games that are offered for free for Playstation Plus subscribers. We could also talk about the service in general, the pros and cons, current subscription bonuses for those on the fence.

I signed up about three months ago when they were offering a ten dollar credit with a one year subscription. I haven't spent the ten bucks yet because the games offered so far have kept me busy. In my opinion, my subscription payed for itself pretty much right away.

I played:

Spec Ops: The Line - Great game and not just a cookie cutter modern military shooter.
Little Big Planet 2 - I'm not really into this series but this is a strength of PS+ to me. I downloaded it and got my fill of it in about three hours of play time. This would have never warranted a purchase so it was cool to play it in this fashion. Just like...
Demon's Souls - I'm not the kind of gamer who is attracted to games that are renowned for their difficulty, but like Little Big Planet 2 I was able to play it enough to see what all the hype was about, and walk away with no money or shelf space investment.
Sleeping Dogs - An above average sandbox game. Cool John Woo-esque story much like City on Fire.

I have played Vanquish and Infamous 2 prior to PS+ but they are still available and I would highly recommend them both.

I also have played a bunch of PSN titles. Joe Danger 2 was really fun and is still available. Closure was a neat puzzle platformer but I didn't play too much of it. I tried The Cave, which is still available, but didn't care for it.

Last week's game was Deus Ex: Human Revolution which I have yet to play and later in the month Saint's Row The 3rd is coming which is bittersweet for me because I have already played it but it was one of my favorite games of this generation so I may just play it again.

I almost forgot all the Vita games. I don't own a Vita but if I ever get one and I still have a PS+ subscription I will have quite a collection from the get-go including Uncharted, Gravity Rush, Virtue's Last Reward, Disgaea 3, and quite a few other noteworthy titles.

So, two last things I'll leave you with are that I have subscribed via email to http://blog.us.playstation.com/ to be kept up to date on the new free games coming out each week. Also, I "purchase" and put everything in my download queue no matter my interest level, because you never know.

My question to PS+ members is what do you expect to happen with the service with the PS4?

My question to PS+ members is what do you expect to happen with the service with the PS4?

So far Sony has said that PS+ will exist on PS4. What that means for current subscribers and transitioning between the two consoles remains to be seen.

When my subscription comes due in March, I probably still won't even be thinking about the new consoles yet so as long as there is quality content being released on PS3 I will very likely renew.

***

Not to change the subject but I forgot to mention in my original post one thing I have been disappointed with so far is the real lack of PS1 and PS2 classics available for free. It seems like before I subscribed they were around all the time and since I've been a member there haven't been any. I'm hoping to see more in the future.

I had a 1 month subscription back in March or April, and I thought it was great.  It allowed me to play games for free, which is always awesome.

I thought The Cave was fun, as well as Spec Ops: The Line.  I also played through Closure, which was a pretty good puzzle game.  If I played videogames more, I could see myself getting a subscription.

I love the idea of PS+ but can't force myself to pay for it. I rent/borrow a lot of current gen games from Gamefly/local library. I do see PS+ as a great alternative to Microsoft's Live and hope it forces Microsoft to provide more than just online for next-gen.

i see the appeal of it, but it's just not worth it for me. any kind of subscription puts a time limit on your games, and i tend to be slow at going through single player on most games. even if they're free games, the subscription would probably run out before i had beaten more than a handful.

I've been subscribed for around 3 years. When I first started I liked it because we were getting free PS1 games often. Now I love it with Sleeping Dogs, Little Big Planet and all the other PS3 freebies. I grabbed most of the RE and Assassins Creed games when the prices were slashed too. Overall I really like the service.

I've had it too since the start and the number of "free" games I've had has really helped me save money.

all round I think its more value for money than xbox live as all you get for the same amount is to go online which no seems a ripoff...

I do miss not getting the PS1 games now but that does mean we get PSN games instead, before they gave you 3/4 mini's games that I very rarely played

Today's updates include Uncharted 3, XCom: Enemy Unknown and LittleBigPlanet Karting. That's a hell of a week right there.

Wasn't expecting any of those. Honestly a bunch a PSN crap and Saint's Row the 3rd for the rest of June would've sufficed.

Very psyched about XCom!

Tomorrow's games will be Saint's Row the Third which is the best sandbox game I have ever played and one of my favorite games in general, and Gods Eater Burst, compatible on both PSP and Vita.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/06/17/playstation-plus-saints-row-the-third-free-for-members/

Just curious to those who don't have PS+, has the news that it will be required to play online for the PS4 made anyone think about jumping in now to grab some of these great freebies?

EDIT: Also curious if anyone has played Gods Eater Burst. Is it any good? Looks cool, and right in my wheelhouse of weird JRPGs.

I will probably bite, but I need to upgrade the hard drive in my PS3 first. I'm still at 20GB.

Yeah, it's $20 though, so I'm going to have to either wait for a sale or whore myself to my gift card earning apps. (I have a strict no-buy any apps with anything but gift-cards rule)

Little bit of a sneak peak into November, including PS4 titles for the first time. Pretty cool. Psyched on Binary Domain. That's the kind of game I signed up for. Mindless, mid-tier shooters and such. I've been wanting to play it but have no need to clutter my collection with it.

Unless you mean a sort of 'spiritual prequel' shmup like Sturmwind, Sine Mora (first 'M' rated shmup I've played, incidentally) was not on Dreamcast.  It's been released for XBLA, PSN, iOS, Windows, and Vita.  Neat game, not everyone's cup of tea (I adore the art design, but had to turn off the subtitles for all the nonsensical swearing.)

I really enjoyed Binary Domain.  It lacked polish and in some ways showed better concepts than execution.  But it was fun, interesting, and had some standout moments.

Was initially exited for Soul Sacrifice, but after playing the demo, I got nauseous because, like SO MANY VITA GAMES, NO SOUTHPAW SUPPORT!! >:(

erg.

Anyway, between DD:DA and the two PS4 exclusives, November looks to be the best PS+ month yet for me.

Almost sure it was dreamcast. Now I'm curious, I gotta check when I get home. Either way it was definitely a bootleg so it could have been a homebrew port.

I played a demo of Contrast at a local EB Games and it was really cool! The controls, and controller, are pretty slick.

I don't normally like in-store demos because I feel like I can't get into the games because there are other people in line so I'm rushed and not meticulous in my playing, but Contrast felt fun to play. This will be my time sink since Watch Dogs has been delayed.

I'm excited that they added another PS4 game for my ready made collection for when I actually get one, I'd just really like to see a full retail game. I know they'll be coming eventually. They just need a bigger library over time be able to give away the second tier games like they do now.

Sometimes I think that, but then I realize RPGs are the games I want to own and collect. I'm happy with PS+ being a few months old AAA shooters and actions/adventure games and the like.

Today we got Tomb Raider for PS3 and Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition for PS4.

Very much appreciated.

Also needs a few updates:

Terreria was added on June 17th. I actually missed this one because they've changed up the program a bit, which I explain below.
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/06/16/playstation-plus-terraria-free-for-members/

Mutant Mudds Deluxe went up last week:
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/06/23/playstation-plus-mutant-mudds-deluxe-free-for-members/

And all of the July games will go up tomorrow. This is how they're going to do it now, all at once as opposed to week to week, so make sure you check in the beginning of the month and queue them all up so you don't forget because from what I understand, they'll only be available for a month and that's it!

Awesome, I've been trying to hunt down a cheap copy of Injustice for a while now.  Free is even better  :)

I had a chance over the weekend to try both Luftrausers and Binding Of Isaac Rebirth. I must say, I think I'm just not into what is currently going on in the indie game scene, and I feel like people (both mainstream and amateur) rave about all of them, all the time. It was cool, for example, to be able to try Binding of Isaac because every podcast I listen to is talking about it right now. I just didn't like it. Luftrausers was all the rage a few months ago. Again, it's cool to see what all the hub-bub was all about but I...don't see what the hub-bub was all about.

I've just been thinking about this a lot. Many of the games on PS+, especially on the Vita, are these kinds of indie games. I'm just realizing now how few of them I actually like. I didn't care for Braid, I didn't care for Fez, I liked Limbo but not nearly as much as some people. Same with Hotline Miami. I have Spelunky on my Vita but I have almost have a bias against it already because of how some people treat it as the second coming.

Not to derail my own thread, but we're at least a week out from December's preview being announced. What say you about the hyperbolic over-ratedness of every single damned indie game that comes out?

They tend to have their 2 weeks of fame and die off fairly quickly. Most of them just don't have the content for replay, and burn out fairly quickly.

I gotta agree about not being into the whole indie scene.  I haven't played a lot of them, but just about any that I have played I just couldn't get into.  And most of them don't look interesting enough for me to try them.  Even as much as people rave about Shovel Knight, I still have very little interest in it.

The PS+ offerings for the last few months have been very disappointing for me personally since they have largely consisted of indie games.  What happened to all of those awesome AAA games they were giving out?  I don't even know what types of games Luftrausers and Binding of Isaac are, but like you said, I just have a bias against them already just because none of these indie games have captured my interest in the past.  The only exception that comes to mind is FTL.  I've yet to play it, but I do want to try it sometime soon.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to hate on indie games.  Game development has become a big and costly industry, and I think it's great that indie developers have an avenue for creating and distributing their games, and I also think it's great that there is a market for these types of games.  They're just not for me.

Lately, I was discussing this with a good friend of mine who is pretty ticked that PS+ and GwG games have been mostly indie titles.  I defended them at first... and then realized that for most of them, I also play briefly and then lose interest.  Although I have to admit a few hours with Luftrausers was much more enjoyable than the entire campaign and mp of the new Call of Duty, IMHO.

There are always exceptions, naturally.  But it has felt for some time that PS+/GwG get filler-type titles instead of something I'd play for awhile.

It's also kept me from buying pretty much anything digital; the last three times I made a purchase, the same game went free before I sunk any real time into it.

There have been a lot of duds in the recent PS+ releases, but I'm happy to have the subscription. It's nice that I was able to get Metrico and Muramasa for free on my Vita, and Tomb Raider on my PS3. Having to pay the $50 annually kind of sucks, but the amount of free games I've downloaded has justified the subscription fee.

I have to redact what I said about Luftrausers. I put a little more time into it on both my Vita and PS3 and I actually really like it, though it is really only intensely fun in short bursts.

I'm also playing Sly Cooper Thieves in Time which was a PS+ title a few months ago. I'm playing on the Vita so far, but the game is so good that I may download it to PS3 as well and utilize the cross-save feature.

Ok, I have a couple potentially stupid questions.  I have not stepped into the PS plus realm, and I have only been really into my PS3 for about a year.  The free games sound really cool, and I like the deals that I see on the Playstation store.  My questions are:
Do you get to keep the free games if you leave Playstation plus?
What else do you get with PS plus besides free games and store discounts?

Title: Re: Playstation Plus (PS+) Discussion Thread
Post by: GrayGhost81 on November 21, 2014, 09:30:15 AM
Not stupid questions at all!

Do you get to keep the free games if you leave Playstation plus?

No. You lose access to them if you leave, but you will regain access to your entire queue if you renew, even if there is a gap in time.

What else do you get with PS plus besides free games and store discounts?

Multiplayer for PS4. Multiplayer at this time is still free for PS3.

Cool!  Thank you.  I have been considering a PS+ subscription.  I think I might wait until I get my PS4, though.

You won't regret a PS+ subscription. I was on the fence for a long time but I'm so happy I made the decision to get it. Even without your PS4 you'll find loads of value in PS+. If there are free games for it that you want you can always leave them in your download queue to wait until you bring home your new console.

Just curious if anyone has played, or is going to play Deadly Premonition. I'ts one of my favorite games ever and shouldn't be missed this month!

I tried Titan Attacks over the weekend but it was boring as all get-out so I deleted it.

I played Deadly Premonition back when it came out on the Xbox 360.  I know that this is really a 'love it or hate it' kind of game, but I seem to be the only person who has a neutral stance on it.  On the one hand, I love the setting, characters, and overall quirkiness (obvious homages to Twin Peaks), but on the other hand, the gameplay is very rough around the edges.  This game probably has the worst driving controls of any game I've ever played, although I think the Director's Cut version may have touched up the controls a bit.

Definitely worth checking out though.  It's the closest thing you'll find to a video game adaptation of Twin Peaks.

January's games have been announced.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/12/31/playstation-plus-januarys-free-games/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27uVkXaWogE

inFAMOUS: First Light (PS4)
The Swapper (PS4|PS3|PS Vita)
Prototype 2 (PS3)
DuckTales Remastered (PS3)
Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition (PS Vita|PS3)
Whoa Dave! (PS Vita|PS4 version will be released at a later date)

Not a bad spread if you ask me. Prototype 2 was awesome for those who haven't played it. I've heard good things about Ducktales but you can go to Hell if you think I'm going to play that without going to Gamestop and buying an empty case for it that I can look at on my shelf first.

Floyd, curious why you wouldn't just grab everything? They're only available for a month but once you queue them up you can get them as long as you're a member. One day, for example, you may want to play Yakuza 4, which is an incredible game.

August's games are LIVE!

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2015/07/29/ps-plus-free-games-for-august-2015/

Quote
What makes treasure hunting even more appealing? Treasure hunting with friends! Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris leads the lineup of free PS Plus games for August, which includes four games that are playable on PS4. Which games, you ask? Well, you’ve come to the right place…
Temple of Osiris follows in the footsteps of Guardian of Light, with fast-paced cooperative play, head-scratching puzzles, and glorious treasure. Traverse the dangerous environments solo, or with friends, and guide Lara on yet another supernatural adventure.

Also up for grabs is the critically-acclaimed Limbo. This haunting story has captured the hearts and minds of gamers around the globe — and has chilled a fair number of spines. If you have a fear of spiders, be prepared to cover your eyes.

If that sounds a bit too unnerving, jam out and get creative with Sound Shapes — which is also available on PS3 and PS Vita. Sound Shapes revolves around musical platforming, fantastic visuals, and a powerful level creator.

Rounding out the PS4 offering for this month is Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones, which is also available on PS3 and PS Vita. This puzzle platformer tasks you with escaping a dangerous research facility in which death is readily distributed to your hapless clones.

Also, joining the August lineup are God of War Ascension (PS3) and CastleStorm (PS3, PS Vita), ensuring that you have plenty of gaming to keep you busy this month.

These games are available to PS Plus members starting on Tuesday next week. Enjoy!

Also there's a pretty decent and very wide-ranging sale going on in the PSN store worth checking out:

Interesting. I'll have to check that out later. The PSN Store through consoles has always been notoriously painful.

Meanwhile if you use an internet browser and go through store.playstation.com you can still see all the games at once.

They've been pretty good about getting the games out on time for a while now.
Broken Age is pretty good for anyone who hasn't already played it, but it's not an easy plat for any trophy collectors we have around here.
Kung Fu Rabbit is cute and pretty good.
Unmechanical: Extended is the one that surprised me. I didn't even know they had redone Unmechanical. For anyone who hasn't played the original, it wasn't bad, but it fell very firmly into the category of 'babies first adventure game' and was sort of unremarkable.

I've been playing Kung-Fu Rabbit for a few days. It's a fun platformer. Cute, simple & very nice for a free game :D

Does anyone think PS+ will make a  more "premium" title available for free any time soon? Not complaining of what they have had available, its just been awhile since they have had one come available. I think the last games was Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeros

Although I did enjoy last month's games, Xeodrifter was very fun, and the Lara Croft game was fun in a Gauntlet Legends kind of way.

Yeah, it seems like there are less and less retail titles. Like you, I'm not going to complain about it. When I look at my download list of almost 400 games there are plenty in there I can go back to. But I remember when I first signed up I would hold off on buying games that had been out for more than a few months because they came up a lot.

Perfect, a quick, free platinum! Works out even better as there are rumors about that Season 3 won't be on the PS3, so I'll need a current save set up.

I knew it was a good idea to hold off on Blood Dragon the last few times it was on sale.

Also, anyone who needs to renew, Amazon is currently selling 1 year subs for $40.

A pity they completely removed the multiplayer from Zombi... I get how split screen would fail but a companion app for phones would have easily fixed that... Oh well, it's free this month so can't complain.

So, for this month:

Bionic Commando Rearmed 2, PS3
God of War: Ghost of Sparta, PS Vita
LocoRoco Cocoreccho!, PS3
Switch Galaxy Ultra, PS4, PS Vita
Table Top Racing: World Tour, PS4
Tropico 5, PS4

Nothing to phone home about, but Bionic Commando and Ghost of Sparta are pretty good.

Maybe I need a PS4....

So June's PSN+ was announced:

NBA 2K16, PS4
Gone Home: Console Edition, PS4
Echochrome, PS3
Siren: Blood Curse (Episodes 1-12), PS3
God of War: Chains of Olympus, PS Vita
Little Deviants, PS Vita

Gone Home is a good one hour game and the free trophies are a plus. Siren I've read good things about but never got around to getting. The rest is just gravy to me at this point.

Call of Jaurez is old as hell but I remember really enjoying playing it when I first got my PS3.

Gat out of Hell was certainly weak compared to SR 3rd and IV (it is just an expansion afterall), but fun for a freebie.

Oreshika definitely looks like my cup of tea.

AdVenture Capitalist is a fantastic free game. It's a very simple business related game that relies heavily on a timer mechanic.

You spend money to buy businesses and then the businesses earn you money over a period of time. It's only fun for 10 minutes at a time, but that 10 minutes is pretty fun. The music and UI are charming. It even offer some humor with the names and looks of the managers you can hire, like Admiral Snackbar (instead of Ackbar) and Forest Trump, who looks like a mix between Forest Gump and Donald Trump.

I think maybe they don't know what the word 'lone' means.

Trophy hunters say Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 is another free platinum game.
Others are saying Horizon Chase Turbo is a hidden PS4 gem.

Apparently PES 2019 was dropped in favor of Detroit: Become Human.

That's a trade up for sure.

It's also the deluxe version, so it comes with Heavy Rain as well.

Not bad. Darksiders 3 is one of those mixed opinion games, so it's nice to have the chance to try it without spending money on it. I have Arkham Knight on Steam but I'm not sure if they fixed that version or if it's still FUBAR, so I'm glad to have a backup.

I've been sitting on getting Darksiders 3 for a while, so this works for me. Interestingly, it's been pointed out by others that PSN+ has now given the entire Darksiders series away.

So I was surprised to see Firewalls basic trophies were so high in value. It's not uncommon for VR games to have a higher than normal value simply because VR has a high price of entry, and then you have to buy the games. But this was a little much even considering that. Apparently it's online multiplayer heavy and you're looking at an average 160 hours to finish. So that explains that.

May 2020

Cities: Skylines
Farming Simulator 19

Lots of bellyaching on social media due to these picks but I remember Cities: Skylines getting tons of positive buzz when it came out.

It's going to be a tad clunky with a controller, but Cities: Skylines is good stuff.
Farming Simulator is good if you like that kind of game. If you're a trophy hunter, it's a pretty simple platinum as well.

I wouldn't pass on Erica. It's an FMV with Hollywood level production and is pretty good, if you don't mind interactive stories.
Rise of the Tomb Raider isn't terrible either, particularly so if you're getting it free anyway.

Catching us up:

PSN+ February 2021
-Destruction AllStars (PS5)
-Control: Ultimate Edition (PS4/5)
-Concrete Genie (PS4)

PSN+ March 2021
-Final Fantasy VII Remake (PS4, can't be upgraded)
-Farpoint (PS4)
-Maquette (PS5)
-Remnant: From the Ashes (PS4)

Control and Concrete Genie are solid games and I recommend both. Farpoint reviews well, but it's one downfall is being locked behind the PS VR price tag.

If you have PSVR, Farpoint is pretty cool, there are so few games that use the gun and this is one of them.
