Overview
The FM Sound Unit was released in 1987 as an audio expansion module for the Sega Mark III console. Inside the FM Sound Unit is a Yamaha YM2413 FM synthesizer chip, which provides an additional nine audio channels and greatly enhances music and sound effects in compatible games. The module is clipped onto the top of the Mark III, and plugs into the expansion port in front of the Mark III. A short cable sends composite video and audio into the module, and the passed through video signal and mixed audio signal are sent out via a 5-pin DIN connector on the module. The transmitter module of the Telecon Pack can be attached for connecting the entire setup through RF.
About 40 games released in Japan take advantage of the FM Sound Unit, and an additional 18 were programmed with FM audio code but were never released in Japan. The FM Sound Unit was later built into the Japanese release of the Sega Master System, but FM audio support was never included with the Mega Drive or the Mega Adaptor add-on.
Great Baseball, Pit Pot, and Teddy Boy Blues do not work properly with the FM Sound Unit connected. A special notice was included in the box to make Mark III owners aware of these compatibility issues.
