One of the more popular third-party controllers available for the Nintendo 64, the Mad Catz Advanced Control Pad was released under Mad Catz, High Frequency and Get Into The Game branding. Initially debuting in 1997 in black, the Advanced Control Pad would eventually be seen under the High Frequency branding in Toys "R" Us stores in numerous colorways and eventually in an exclusive translucent light purple, similar to Nintendo's Atomic Purple, in Target stores under their Get Into The Game branding.
Like most of Mad Catz' output during this era, the Advanced Control Pad includes programmable turbo and slow-mode functionality. The joystick is similar to Nintendo's in that it utilizes two gears and a return spring, albeit with a slightly stiffer feel than a standard Nintendo 64 controller. However, instead of using optical encoders, the Advanced Control Pad's gears are connected to two potentiometers. The usage of gears contributes to a similar feel to Nintendo's controllers, but sadly suffers the same downside of plastic-on-plastic wear, leading to loose sticks and poor input control.
Trivia
This variant of the Mad Catz Advanced Control Pad was released exclusively at Target stores under the name "Advanced Controller" under Target's Get Into The Game line of products. The color is a translucent light purple, which is very similar to Nintendo's Atomic Purple. The controller was released in a blister package with no Mad Catz-specific logos on the package.
