Looked over the list of games still being ignored on nintendoage.come and decided to go for some sports action tonight. Picked two games off the shelf that I havn't touched at all before. Legends of the Diamond and Pro Sports Hockey.
Legends of the Diamond was about what you'd expect from a NES baseball title. Plays pretty much the same as the others I've come across. The gimmick was that you get to play as 8-bit versions of some of the most recognizable names in baseball from years past. Not being a sports fan of any kind I didnt recognize more than 3-4 of the players though.
They tried to add a bit of extra flare by adding things like spectators catching balls in the crowd, picking fights with the pitcher after being hit by a pitch, weiner dogs picking up foul balls, and breaking your bat in a fit of rage after getting struck out. Thats all they are though. Flare. They dont add anything special to the game.
There was also a VERY annoying glitch where if your outfielders run into the barrier at the end of the field they get stuck in the wall and you have to sit idly by while the other team slowly scores some runs. I've still got several other baseball games to play, but I've already played more fun and less broken games.

And what kind of Canadian would I be if I didnt commemorate a milestone like my 150th NES victory with anything other than a Hockey game?
Picked Washington because their goalie had the highest stats in comparison the other teams. I picked them since I could worry a bit less about the puck being in my end of the ice and also because it meant I wouldnt have to play againt the strongest goalie in the game. It worked out well for the most part and after I figured out the controls most games were a big blowout. Even the semi-finals game ended in 18-5 in my favor.
The finals were a lot tighter though. Entered the third period with a tie score of 10-10. Luckily I was smart enough to hold back my strongest players in the second period and reserve their energy for the last one. Worked out well and ended in a 13-11 victory!
My big gripe about the game was that the passing was horrible. It was so lousy that I didnt use it, period. Once a player got the puck he was a one man team.

Hey now!
So, you think you're greener than I am when it comes to gaming? Then you've got another think comin', mister! I'm so green, I could run around in the nude on St. Patrick's Day, and be completely pinch proof!
Ummm...
Wow, sometimes I even creep myself out.
*Cough* Moving on: I'm a big proponent of the whole "Reduce-reuse-recycle" philosophy. The vast majority of my collection is second-hand, which means I'm REUSING stuff that others have, in a sense, RECYCLED by directly selling to me via yard sales or indirectly via thrift stores. And by selling or donating, they've REDUCED their stock of unwanted games. Heck, I do a little recycling of my own with some reselling here and there, which generates my favorite kind of greenery.
And need I point out that the whole reduce-reuse-recycle deal also lessens the impact of our carbon footprint on... something or other. Actually, I don't fully understand the mechanics of the whole "carbon footprint" deal, so I'm probably talking from where the sun doesn't shine in this instance. If only I hadn't lost the number to Al Gore's direct line; I'm sure he could explain it to me...
But, what about supporting local small businesses? Hey, you can't get a smaller, more local business than a weekend garage sale just down the road! Fortunately for me, I reside in a region that usually has decent weather year-round, with sprawling suburbs that range from lower-middle to upper-middle class. These conditions provide a lot of opportunities for good deals, and a wide range of selection on Saturday mornings! Which, sadly, I've been unable to take advantage of lately, 'cuz I work Saturday mornings... *SOB*
Hey, you know what? If I expand the scope of "local" to include the San Francisco bay area, and throw in a few BIG businesses-- because hey, why not?-- no one's closer to the action than I am! There's Namco Bandai Electronic Games Inc. in San Jose which, according to Google maps, is 15.9 miles away from my front door. Then there's Redwood City some thirty-odd miles up the peninsula, home of Electronic Arts Inc., Konami of America, and Capcom USA Inc. Just beyond Redwood City is Foster City, where Sony Computer Entertainment of America is based. Then it's on to the city itself, where Sega of America has called home for over a decade after moving from Redwood City. And we mustn't forget Atari, which came into existence just a few miles up the road forty years ago.
And while they're neither exclusively nor directly involved with gaming, I mustn't forget eBay and NetFlix, both of which are a mere eight-minute drive away from me. Speaking of driving: I've delivered pizzas to both of these places on several occasions back in the day, and neither of 'em were very big on tipping. Just an FYI... And speaking of pizza: I am well aware that Chuck E. Cheese's was founded 'round my neck of the woods. Man, are you guys really so jealous of my greenness and locality that you'd throw that in my face? Sheesh-- grow up, willya!
In all seriousness, however, I really do support the reuse and recycling of game software and hardware, though not exactly for noble reasons. Basically, I'm a cheap@$$, and will add just about any game of interest to my collection if the price is right, regardless of its cosmetic condition. All that matters to me is that it plays properly. That isn't to say that I won't trade up-- or is it level up?-- for an item in better condition if the opportunity arises. I do have some vanity after all. I also support a local business-- an e-waste recycler, no less-- also for less than noble reasons. Thanks to a conversation I struck up with one of the company's managers at a garage sale, I'm allowed to look through their stock of wasted stuff for spare parts... so long as I have e-waste of my own to, er, "exchange." haven't found much yet, but at least I have an avenue there.
Anyhoo, I wish you all a happy Earth Day. Stay green my long-haired tree-hugging compatriots!
Oh yeah, and keep it on channel 3.
'Late
With much of the last few weeks spent traversing the world of Lord British, I can honestly say that I wont miss it much. Exodus was far to undirected for my tastes, and while Quest of the Avatar had many more interesting ideas it ultimately had many more flaws.
I didnt have high hopes for Warriors of Destiny, but I did expect it to follow the trend and improve slightly upon Quest of the Avatar. Within the first several minutes of playing it was quite obvious that wouldnt be the case. It basically took everything I disliked about the first two games and upped the ante with some terrible controls. Yes thats right, RPGs can apparently have bad controls.
It was painfully obvious that this game was meant to be played on a PC that the developers either had trouble porting it over or were just plain lazy. Just walking around is slow and unresponsive. Pulling out your cursor to interact with the world is equally as frustrating and the very shallow inventory, both active and inactive, are constantly agonizing. The game also has a very annoying overworld theme playing continuously that makes the Hydlide soundtrack worth shelling out $100 for.
I do have one good thing say about it though. NO MOONGATE TRAVEL, WOOHOOO!!!!!! (well you have to twice to get to a shrine, but you dont need to use them to go from town to town like in the previous two titles). This isnt really a bonus for the game, its just a bonus in comparison to the previous two.

To sharpen my senses after losing many hours to these RPGs I decided to pop in something I've been wanting to play for a couple years now, but didnt have a copy until recently. Darkwing Duck! Cant go wrong with a Capcom/Disney titles on the NES right?
It was a solid game, but I honestly thought I'd enjoy it much more than I did. The shooting was fairly slow and occasionally I had issue with the jump mechanic and the hit recovery. Not a bad game though just didnt hit the spot like I always though it would.

Future Plans - I'm slightly RPG'd out at the moment so I'm going to take a brief break from the genre and play some faster moving games. I was able to trade for Bucky O'Hare not to long ago and that has been a BIG want for a long time so I'm looking forward to checking that one out. Also gonna try out Kick Master and King's Knight in the near future.
I've been having trouble getting my Ultima videos to upload to youtube as they keep failing in the processing stage. I'll give them each another try, but if it doesnt work I suppose I'll have to chop them in half to reduce the size and see if I cant upload them in 2 or more parts.....groan.
Yes, that's right, we now have over 80,000 game scans in our database! Just think about that for a minute, hundreds of people from all over the world have brought together 80,000 scans of thousands of different games in just under 8 years. And if you think about it, that's about 10,000 scans per year, or just under 30 new scans ever single day! And that's not even including the more than 30,000 screenshots.
So congratulation RF Generation on this milestone. And thanks to everyone has added any of those scans, whether you've added just one or a thousand, you've helped us become and continue to be THE Classic and Modern Video Games Database!
Remember to keep it on Channel 3 and those scans coming!
So, this is now painfully late. I was slow to edit, then once I had it, the file locked up and I lost all of my edits. In the middle of this, RF Generation had a major issue on the site, causing us to lose 3 years of forum posts and a couple of months of database work. But, here it is! Our awards show and also an interview with lisalover1!

Last night, while I was waiting for a load of laundry dry so I could finally go to bed, I finished Super Mario Brothers for the NES. Of course, I wasn't running my capture device on my recording laptop, but I did manage to snap a pic with my phone:.

Yes, I play NES (amd many other systems) on a projector. Sorry about the quality, but this seems to happen all the time with my Android phone. Oh well.
I'm not sure what to do now. SMB was one of the few games I played in my youth I never got around to beating (the other being Section Z, for obvious reasons). I don't think I'm ready to unplug my NES yet, so I think something on that system. An action or platform game, I think. After looking at my collection I think I can come up with a few titles:
Conquest of the Crystal Palace Ironsword Dr. Chaos (I know, not a pure action game) Rollergames Total Recall Ultimate Stuntman
A couple others that I didn't realize I had: Swords and Serpents Tombs and Treasures
I'm not really familiar with any of these titles, so anything I pick will be a suprise.
Some of you may have been under the assumption that since last we spoke was just over 2 weeks ago, that I've been ignoring my duties in regard to the timeless craft of NES playing. Or maybe even thought I had finally ventured into the realm of the modern.
Fear not, for I have simply embarked on my quest to overcome some of the most epic and time consuming titles!
The Ultima series has been on my mind for far to long now so I felt it was time to envelop myself into the vast and phantasmal lands of Britannia. My first task was to ensure the evil serpent Exodus was never allowed to see the moon of Trammel. This long and confusing journey left me very disoriented and even had me resort to visiting ye ole gamefaqs for some expert advice for my quest. After much pain and head scratching I was finally able to prevent the rise of Exodus and cleanse the land of his impending plague.
But the joy of the people only lasted so long before their hearts started to turn darkness and despair. The wise old liege King British enlisted my help in order to bring the Avatar back to Britannia and prove to the masses that hope still flourished throughout the lands. Thus began my Quest of the Avatar! From my previous journey to thwart the Serpent I had learned a valuable lesson before proceeding on future such quests. The Golden Rule of Ultima you might say. And it was this: "It is vitally important to read all lore that doth came packaged originally at retail".
With this in mind I was able to craft my character, learn the meaning of many useful magic spells, create a team of warriors worthy of accompanying the Avatar, learn to navigate ye cursed Moongates, and know general directions to move me onward to complete thy quest.
Although the moons of Trammel and Felucca ran many cycles I was able to master each of the 8 virtues and obtain the Codex hidden from all in the depths of the Abyss, and thus obtain true Avatarhood and bring happiness back to the land of Britannia and joy into the eyes of the old king!
Not to be outdone, a small family in a neighboring land also underwent a perilous journey of their own. Once a powerful wizard was able to subdue a most ferocious dragon into the seemingly placid confines of a beautiful piece of art. But as time passed the dragon's power began to return and threaten to destroy those who had imprisoned him. Now old and frail the wizard enlisted the help of his vernal family. They embarked in a quest that will hence for be known as the Legacy of the Wizard.
In this perilous and confounding quest each member of the family was able to apply their formidable skills to finding each of the 4 crowns, concluding in the mighty Dragon Slayer Sword. With this sword the bravest of knights known as Raos was able to stay the relentless onslaught of the beast and overcome the murderous, ravenous monster.
It is also worth noting that this journey of integrity wasn't taken alone. No, not by any means. I was accompanied by the veracious champion and heroic paladin known only as Sir Duke.Togo! The mighty warrior of legend! And although the might of his once powerful blade is now weighed upon by the experience of many battles and a taxing life spanning many eons he was an invaluable asset to the cause. Please, before the sun sets on his life of achievement do him the honor of commiserating via comment left in this very scroll or in the greatly acclaimed youtube channel video which shall hence forth be linked to at the bottom of this find parchment.
As if these 3 tales of bravery and valor weren't enough, a rapacious-minded youth saw fit to address me in the comforts of mine own youtube channel. He sought to blaspheme my deeds stating that Air Fortress should not be considered complete without achieving success in the dreadful second quest. Verily, the arrogance and gall of such a proclamation mustn't go unmet! Thus he had me don my cosmic armor and my celestial steed once again in order to defend the Farmel quadrant as I did in the days of old.

Hey everyone! Yesterday my brother got a package in the mail Athletic World - Rerelase Brand New Sealed (H-Seam) he won on the bay for $25.00. Yesterday morning we went back to an indoor garage sale hoping to find some retro games but sadly she didn't have any out like she said she would...but we did pick up Glover for $0.75 and Pac-Man Puzzle Board Game for $2.00. Then we took a drive to a neighboring town to actually head home but we saw a thrit store on the way so we stopped in. I looked around in the VHS tapes just to see if there is any video game related tapes and well I found one Pokemon Headquarters tape which was given away exclusively at Toys R Us, then I went over to the glass case and saw some games in there then I called my brother over and asked him which ones I should buy. SO I purchased the ones we really needed (by far the best stuff they actually had there) I got Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil (CIB) $4.00, Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix (CIB) $6.00, and the VHS tape was a $1.00. Then we drove to Half Price Books becasue occassionally they get some really good games (they had Final Fantasy VIII import soundtrack for $50.00 A little to expensive for my taste) and we picked up LucasArts Air COmbat Classics (CIB) $10.00 (My brother got that), I purchased Quake iI Strategy Guide - $2.00, and Prince of Persia Graphic Novel Vol. 1 - $2.00. THEN we went to Goodwill and they had a ton of PC game we purchased 7th Guest (Win 95 CD Version) - $6.00, Deus Ex - $6.00, Homeworld - $8.00, Lighthouse: The Dark Being - $8.00, Shivers - $8.00 and Shivers II: Harvest of Souls - $8.00 ALL are CIB, Duke Nukem 3D - $2.00 and Casper Greatest Hits (PS1) for $2.00. Then we went an Indoor Flea Market and a store attached to it. At the Flea Market Pocahontas Genesis (CB) $2.00 (Anyone have a manual I can purchase???) , then we went to the store attached to there and purchased Police Quest Collection for $5.00 and Return to Zork - $5.00. Well that was out adventure yesterday nothing seriuously rare but a good haul none the less. Hope you all enjoy! (Sorry about the HPB picture flash over took).

Turok: Battle of the Bionosaurs (Gameboy)
This game is interesting for about 10 minutes. Then very quickly you get sick of the extreeeeme repetition and needless frustration.I had very fond memories of this game, as it was one of the first video games I ever had. Unfortunately, my happy nostalgic memories of this game couldn't hide the fact that the actual game is pretty mediocre.
You play as an Native American looking guy and you start the game with a knife and bow. You will fight the same 2 or 3 enemy types over and over for the whole first level and the combat is pretty boring. Enemies will always just charge at you then charge in the opposite direction, then back at you again. So the best strategy is to tip toe your way right to the limits of their patrolling range and poke them with your knife a few times. Sometimes enemies will stand in place and shoot at you if they have a gun. Annoyingly, hitting an enemy with any weapon doesn't slow them down or stop them, they will continue charging at you undeterred by the consequences of very recent shotgun blasts to the face or shankings from your knife. It is pretty annoying because often you will hit them then they will charge at you and damage you 2 or 3 times even while you are hitting them. I guess the enemies just have no fear of death or feel no pain or something. Perhaps all the enemies are on drugs I don't know. Really, it's probably just a badly developed combat system. Oh, and you wont just fight each enemy in the level one time, you will surely have to backtrack many times and refight all the boring enemies.
Really though this game is less of a side-scrolling shooter and more of a platformer. The platforming isn't easy either. You have to be pretty precise and then you have to be ready to whip out a weapon to attack the enemies that often ambush you right when you land a jump. This game is like 60 percent platformer 40 percent combat. The platforming is more fun than the combat so that is good I guess. Plus you have to ration all your bullets since ammo pickups aren't all that frequent. You always feel guilty using your guns since they have limited ammo so most times you will have to use your knife then in order to conserve your ammo anyways.
The game is setup so you have to collect 3 key things to progress to the next level, but usually when you find one key you have to drop down and backtrack through the entire level again. If you are observant of the levels and find semi-hidden new weapons, guess what your reward is? You get to drop down and backtrack again through the level to reach where you decided to jump to get the weapon... Later on when you find the second key can you possibly guess what happens?, the game all of a sudden gets amazing and you never backtrack again. That is what happens.... I wish heh. Of course now you have to drop down and walk through the level yet again...
I played until level 3 and the repetition and extremely frequent backtracking was enough for me. After probably 10 years of not playing this, I never feel the need to play it again.
The gameplay is just extremely tedious because of the backtracking and boring combat. The only fun moments are when you discover a new more powerful weapon that will be fun to use for awhile until you have to mow down tons of boring enemies with it and your brief moment of joy for finding the weapon is immediately gone as you realize that your punishment for finding the weapon is that you have to jump down to an earlier part of the level and backtrack again.
The one thing this game did very well though, is the soundtrack. The songs is this game are pretty great. I think even as a kid a reason I kept playing this game was because I liked the music.
So basically, this game is only worth playing for about 30 minutes to hear the music. After that, the crappy gameplay will make you never want to play the game for a very long time despite how good the music is. Holy backtracking s*** I said backtrack a lot in this blog. Not my choice though since that is what the majority of the game consists of.
The game should really be called Turok: Backtrack of the Backtrackosaurs on the Backtendo TrackBoy...
If you want to see some backtracking in video form, here you go:
I also tried doing my very first gaming video review on youtube if you want to check it out:

Console: Microsoft Xbox 360 Region: U Year: 2006 Publisher: Activision Developer: Z-Axis, Ltd. Rating: T (ESRB): Violence Genre/Sub-genre: Action/Adventure; Beat-'Em-Up Players: 1
I recently looked at Xbox 360 games from the beginning of the system's release, mainly for achievements. I came across X-Men: The Official Game and, since I am X-Men fan, decided to put it on my GameFly queue with the other old games I was stocking up on. I received the game on a Saturday, but didn't dive into it until the following Tuesday.
A bit surprising for a movie-licensed game, the stars reprise their roles: Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Shawn Ashmore as Iceman, (the awesome!) Alan Cummings as Nightcrawler, and Patrick Stewart as Professor X. While their voices are used well in the game cut scenes, said scenes are actually non-moving, in the style more lately used in motion comics of 2-D pictures of the characters moving stiffly. Nevertheless, the voices are probably the best part about this game, Jackman's in particular. He really loves to be Wolverine and it is felt in his line delivery.
The story revolves around the X-Men finding the recently escaped Alkali Lab in Alaska (from the end of the movie X2) still inhabited, this time by Hydra soldiers. Wolverine also discovers Lady Deathstrike had survived her infusion of adamantium that had looked like killed her in that movie. It turns out that Stryker had been carrying on the SENTINEL program at the Labs and, during the course of the first act, the Master Mold escapes and wreaks havoc on the world.
The gameplay involves levels for each of the main characters and uses their powers as the basic game mechanics. Wolverine levels are typical brawler levels, consisting of waves of enemies or one central adversary. Iceman feels like a simple version of a flight sim, wherein he glides through a central arena on a jet of ice while firing ice beams and missiles at enemies. Finally, Nightcrawler's levels are a bit of Wolverine brawling, but mainly consisting of using his teleportation ability to get around minor labyrinth areas.
Of the three characters, I found myself enjoying Nightcrawler's the most. It is intensely satisfying to teleport from a ledge, to a lamppost, then behind an enemy to multi-punch him, before teleporting to the rafters before his buddies could help. If I had my way, I would have loved to have seen a game where this was the main character/mechanic. It could play a bit like an Assassin's Creed game.
Now we come to my favorite part: The achievements. Basically, this is a "simple" 1,000 gamerscore. I say simple in quotes because it follows a pretty cookie-cutter example of a tie-in, where you have end of level/act, collectables, difficulty, and end of game achievements. The most frustrating part will be defeating levels on "Superhero" difficulty in order to get all the mutation points for the characters. This was particularly hard in the beginning, when the characters had little to no mutation help yet. I eventually decided to play the levels on "Hero" (or medium) setting first, getting the collectables and feeling out the levels, before revisiting at the higher setting. Some levels on Superhero would put you back at the very beginning if you die, which was frustrating when you would get to near the end and hit the wrong barrier. Luckily, in the back-half of the game, the designers seemed to care a bit less of the structure/length, and the levels seem to breeze by quickly if you have a lot of mutations.
Overall, I was content playing this for 4-5 hours for some of the gameplay and the 1,000 gamerscore. If I wasn't a fan, I think I still would have gotten enjoyment out of the Nightcrawler levels. I have X-Men Origins: Wolverine sitting on my to-play shelf, and I have heard good things about it, so I look forward to getting back into the X-Men world again in the future.

My computer crashed and i lost my copy (ies) of the best stats game ever. Head Coach v3 (Midnight Oil 1991) is a gridiron management game with zero graphics but fantastic statistical game-play. I can't believe you all fell for it! And don't tell me you knew it was all a ruse, I know you thought it was real. The good news is that RF Generation is not going anywhere, we'll always be here for you guys and we certainly wouldn't intentionally betray our audience like that. In fact, I don't even own an Android device or even its competitors, so its safe to say you're all safe from us becoming Android Generation for real.
However, theGrue's Android App is most definitely real, and you all should download it and give feedback on it if you do have an Android device.
Keep it on your Android device Channel 3!
