It's dirty and dangerous... Opponents don't care how they force you off... The adrenalin pumps as you battle against six of the dirtiest off-road terrains... The soundtrack thumps as you sweat and slide through impossible turns and axle-busting drops... Only extreme skill and concentration can keep you in the game now... Because you're having the toughest dirtiest experience of your life.
This is an off road race game with 6 cars and 6 tracks. The tracks are narrow and don't have any short cuts. The cars handle and look like huge 4x4 trucks. You'd have to stretch the term 'race car' pretty far to include these vehicles. The most surprising thing about this game is that the manual features a staggering 11 languages: English, German, French, Danish, Swedish, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Norwegian, Dutch and Finnish.
Review:
This game is seriously bad.
First there?s the graphics. Or the lack of them. It?s a polygon game, and we all know that the Saturn was never good with these, especially not with realistic and detailed ones. This game tries very hard to look realistic and has textures of snow, sand, rock and so on. It?s no surprise that this looks absolutely dreadful in a game with a low resolution and no shadow/lighting effects. Most of the time you can?t tell the difference between wall and road. Sometimes you can?t even see what way you have to go! The cars do look tolerable, at least compared to the environment, but the frame rate is terrible; with only one car it?s still acceptable, although far from perfect. But if you get more cars on screen everything will slow down tremendously. I?ve seen PowerPoint presentations that had more life in them.
I don?t consider music very important to a game and normally don?t pay much attention to it. This game on the other hand had music that I just can?t ignore and not hate. It?s some sort of metal rock type of music. The music is not only dreadful; it also doesn?t match with the game at all. Country would match better with it, or something else that?s slow and doesn?t take away the attention from trying to play. The sound is of the same quality. The wheels can be heard quite loud. It?s actually so loud that you can barely hear the engine. When you do a high jump a voice, void of any energy, can be heard, saying: ?whoa! Hardcore!?. ?Woe me,? I yell back.
I won?t bother you with all the details about tracks and cars. Let?s just say that all the cars feel the same and all the tracks drive the same, some of them just have different colours. The biggest game play p?oblem is the suspension, it reacts on all the bumps. You spend most of the time jumping, landing or getting ready to jump. Of course you can?t gain any speed this way, nor can you steer your car in the direction you want. This gets even worse if there are other cars around. Not only will you be watching a diorama, the opponents will also push you around in most unrealistic ways. There are several views you can choose from. The in-car view is the only one with a speedometer. This might be a reason to choose for this view, but all you will see is bumps and the speedometer is impossible to read anyways.
This is typically one of those games that makes you wonder if the developers have ever played it themselves. I can?t think of even one positive point about this monstrosity. Don?t buy it, unless you want a complete collection of Saturn games.
