In a world full of Pacman clones and spinoffs, it is inevitable games such as Trog would become overlooked. Trog however is more than just a Pacman clone, it is one of the greatest NES games ever created, and I am not exaggerating.
Trog, like Pacman, revolves around a single play field in which the character must run and collect orbs while avoiding enemies in order to proceed to the next play field. Unlike Pacman, our heroes(Spike and Bloop), have the ability to attack the enemies in various ways such as punching, shooting fireballs, shooting ice, or turning into gigantic dinosaurs and eating them.
The game does an excellent job in providing balance between the enemies and the main character(s). While it is possible to harm and kill the enemies, the enemies almost always have the advantage. This provides a challenging, yet rewarding, experience.
Playfields are varied and all provide unique experiences. For example, there are bridges connecting islands, teleporters, ice fields, and various other obstacles to be found during each level.
The multiplayer in the game is superb and could be considered the best the NES has to offer. You can either play competitively with your friend in a race to get the orbs, or cooperatively in an effort to beat the game. Or you could just get in random fights which is just as fun.
For the time the game was made, it had superb graphics as well as sound. Really not much to say on this topic.
Trog is a wonderful game, and should be experienced by everyone who likes old school games with simple, yet fun gameplay.
