Overview:
Princess Debut tells the story of a real-world girl who wants to be a princess. She switches places with a princess from another world, and becomes a "princess in training".
The object of Princess Debut is to learn how to dance and find a partner for the ball. You have 30 days to become the best dancer in the land. You dance by using the stylus to follow along in tune with the music. Finding a partner is a bit more difficult. You meet potential partners by going around your kingdom and talking to visiting princes. You can choose your own partner, but there's no guarantee that they'll return your affections. You increase/decrease your "affection meter" with the princes with choose-your-own-adventure style questions and answers. To put it simply, Princess Debut is a dating sim with dancing mini-games. You can also choose your dance costumes (unlockable).
Review:
Laurel Settee's (Antimind) Review:
I've been playing Princess Debut for the past 8 hours and I just can't put it down. Unfortunately, that isn't due to the dancing mini-games. The dancing becomes repetitive very quickly. You gain levels by practicing the same dance over, and over, and over again. Dances are unlockable, you start with a simple Waltz. Unfortunately you're also stuck listening to the same song over and over until you unlock a new dance. Most of Princess Debut's appeal comes from the dating sim aspect. All of the princes have different personalities, pros, and cons. Some are easily snagged as a partner. Others will avoid you like the plague.
Fans of JRPGS will easily fall in love with the character art (and characters!). I think it has high replay value due to the different princes' personalities. It'll be interesting to see where the main story goes with a different prince involved. There are also prince-specific accessories and photos to collect. If you're a completist there's plenty to see here. IF you can get past the repetitive dancing mini-game.
Most Princess Debut fans I've spoken to are in their 20's and 30's. This is the type of title you'd expect to find 8-year old girls playing. If you're looking for a change of pace from your everyday selections, give Princess Debut a go. You may be pleasantly surprised.
Final Verdict: Dancing is fun for about the first 5 minutes. After that it becomes a chore. Dating sim fans should enjoy this title because it offers a little more than your average dating sim. The characters are all lovable in their own way. Changing accessories isn't a huge deal but it is a little something extra. Especially since some accessories can only be obtained from the princes themselves. High replay value, very nice on-the-go. You can play for 5 minutes or 5 hours in one shot. If you're looking for something different check it out. If it just isn't your cup of tea, give it to the lady in your life. Even if that lady happens to be your mother or sister.
Rating: 5.5/10 - would be higher if dancing wasn't such a pain.
