Overview:

from the back of the box:

Smoke the Competition

The original tour de centrifugal force in drift racing is leaving its imitators in the dust. Ridge Racer 6 for Xbox 360 puts you behind the wheel of the latest, ultra-high performance machines. Punch the evolved nitrous system and leave more than the awe-inspiring scenery in your rear-view mirror.
  • Go head-to-head in tire-squealing online multiplayer action.
  • Take 130 new machines drifting through over 200 races.
  • Feel the full-throttle effects of the evolved nitrous system.
Review:

If you are new to the Ridge Racer universe, this game might throw you off at first because these fictional cars tend to drift a lot. I would recommend first-time players to use the "mild" drift setting until they get the hang of it; however, the "mild" cars don't have enough power to win in some of the tougher races, so a move up to "standard" is necessary for you to improve your skill and move on.

New additions to the Ridge Racer series are the "World Xplorer" career mode and 30 beautiful new courses (15 tracks plus 15 reverse). By beautiful I mean there are lots of distractions. Cows, helicopters, airplanes, and satellite dishes litter the landscape, which you might notice if you can manage to take your eyes off the road for a second. The soundtrack consists of a quality techno mix, with a unique song for each course. Each song is long enough that they generally don't have to repeat in a single race. The game also supports custom soundtracks, but the default will suffice.

Unfortunately, the game doesn't feel entirely like an arcade-style racer or have the and features of a detailed racing simulation. Certain previous-gen racers like R: Racing Revolution look and feel more realistic. Where RR6 succeeds though is that it manages to be fun despite these pitfalls. The steering and drifting mechanics, while difficult at first, become the focus of gameplay and are simpler to execute than most other sims. The courses are designed specifically for these cars, and pose different challenges for each class of car. My personal favorite races are the Rave City races with their gentle curves, and wide straights, in addition to bright lights at nighttime and a few curious tunes in the background that are reminiscint of the arcades of old.

A few easter eggs noticeable to veteran gamers are the paint jobs on some of the cars. Expect to see lots of Pac-Man, Galaga, and Galaxian cars. A stellar soundtrack and simple gameplay keep this disc spinning for me, though I admit there are certainly better racing games out there.
