Tan's review:

So I beat this last night and enjoyed it immensely. Echoing my earlier impressions, this game is very underrated and very rewarding if you give it a chance. After a couple hours it really takes off and pulls you in. The ending had a mix of cheesiness, predictability, satisfaction and comedy that was entertaining and provided closure. I was surprised at how long the ending was and how long the final battles were, wasn’t as hard as I had imagined, but I did spend some time leveling and had my characters well past level 70+.

Surprising how much I enjoyed this mostly because I’ve strayed from Japanese RPGs in the last decade or so and turn-based gameplay even more. Just not my cup of tea anymore I guess. I’m more of a BioWare/Bethesda RPGer these days and have been for the last 5-6 years or so. Though games like Rogue Galaxy and Enchanted Arms break that trend from time to time.

Props to FromSoftware for a stable game. As if RRoD’s aren’t enough to think about, there’s always that threat of the game locking up on me that as a 360 owner I come to half expect. One of the most stable games I’ve played on the system yet throughout it’s 50-60 hour run.

Fifty to sixty hours of fun, stable, addictive gameplay, not bad for an $18 bargain bin RPG no? Achievement addicts will like the fact that all the points are had by simply playing the story through. If you can do that, 1000/1000 is yours.

I also enjoyed the various mini-games and golem collecting. This game is very “character management heavy” which I like and the options of how you choose to use your characters is quite extensive.

I have no idea how well this game did or didn’t sell, but I’d like to see a sequel. The gameplay, characters and pretty much everything about it are very well done. Perhaps it’s because the developer isn’t known for their games outside of say Armored Core and Chromehounds. Or maybe the marketing team didn’t make enough of an effort which i suppose would be Ubisoft’s fault. Either way this game remains well under the radar and I’m not ashamed to say it’s top 5 RPG material on the X360.

Pros:

  • Good graphics, sound and controls
  • 40+ hour game for a low price
  • Well written story and addictive gameplay
  • Never crashed or locked up while played

Cons:

  • Multiplayer is kind of useless
  • Dialog can drag on and on sometimes

8.5/10
