Overview:
Donkey Kong Country Returns is a side-scrolling platform game, and is the new installment in the beloved Donkey Kong Country series, published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo.
You play as Donkey Kong, and with the help of Diddy Kong, you should retrieve Donkey Kong's bananas, that were stolen by wooden creatures known as Tik Tak Tribe, that have hypnotic powers.
The game features classic gameplay from Donkey Kong Countryseries, 2 players co-op mode and familiar characters such as Cranky Kong and Rambi.
Review:
raffa85's review:
After been starring some low budget games (DK Barrel Blast, Donkey Konga and others) and doing figuration in some Mario Games, Nintendo and Retro Studios finally decided to bring back the Country series, responsible for the golden age of the DK series, and i'm happy to say that Donkey Kong Country Returnsis just as good as the SNES games.
The new game is very reminiscent of the original trilogy (especially the first one): the 2d platform style, the plot involving the quest for the stolen bananas, the scenarios, (jungle,mine,factory,ruins...), the minecart stages (there are a lot of them), the floating barrels, etc. However, unlike New Super Mario Bros.Wii which plays extremely like the first NES games and feels dated (in every department),Donkey Kong country Returns introduces new mechanics to the series, like the rocket barrel, the interactive backgrounds, the hability to climb walls, and others, while maintains the same visual whimsy you'd expect from the country series, combined with extremely creative, fun and really challenging levels(but it's not as sadistic as Mega Man 9, it's fair). A great mix of old and new.
But, nothing is perfect...i read some complaints about the motion controls used for some moves, and while i agree it is was really unnecessary, they can be easily mastered. My real complain is about the new antagonists, the Tikis. I see that Retro Studios may have replaced the Kremilings to try something new, but unfortunately the new enemies are apathetic, badly designed, and are just as charismatic as the wood which they are made. Some people may see it as a detail, but i found it important, and i think that people who played the original trilogy will miss the charm and humor of the Kremiling crew, which made the Country series much more enjoable.
Finally, i'll leave here one more time my profond admiration for the awesome work that Retro Studios did. They proved to be really able to maintain the same quality level of the original trilogy. Hope to see more DK country games from them in the future
FINAL CONSIDERATIONS
Graphics
Really polished, colorful and well animated. I don't like the overworld map, it's too simple and i miss the characters walking on them (they are represented by a coin or something like it). Some background repetition on some scenarios, especially the factory ones, but nothing that hurts the holy package
Sound
The soundtrack is almost made of remastered versions of old compositions from the first Donkey Kong Country game. As for the original stuff, it's not bad, but it's not up to the same level of greatness.
Gameplay
Creative levels, challenging and has a lot to do after finishing the main quest like collecting jigsaws and KONG letters to unlock new levels and artwork. Would be even better if it had the same good humor of the original trilogy.
My Score 9.0
