The internet. In addition to being a great resource for funny videos, email pyramid schemes, and pr0n, is a great place to find games. This series will feature the best in free and independent games from all over the web, and bring you up to date on indie studios who are bringing their work to consoles.

The first free game of the week is called 3D Logic by Alex Matveev, and can be found at this site. The object of the game is to link together every pair colored squares on the cube. For example, in the screenshot, you have to link orange to orange, purple to purple, blue to blue, and so on. Sounds simple right? WRONG! Later levels will require you to think outside of the box and use very indirect ways of linking them together. I've been able to reach level 18, but after that I get stumped. Thank God for the continue feature.

Our next game this week is Amberial by OddGoo, a rather fun platformer with very simplistic controls. All you need to do in this game is move left and right to reach the goal. However, you must use your ability to bounce to help you reach your destination and avoid obstacles. This is one of the most enjoyable Flash games I've played in a while. It's not entirely original since there are a billion platformers on the net, but this one is different because you must actually use your environment and the objects in it in order to reach the end of the level. There is also added challenge if you try and collect all the Ace symbols. I must caution you however, this game is addictive as crack, so make sure you have some time you can easily waste before playing this.

The internet is full of clones of other, more famous games. Flash Flash Revolution is one of the most well-known and well-regarded clones on the internet. As you could figure out, it is a clone of Konami's Dance Dance Revolution series, developed in flash. There are three different versions of FFR on the site, and all of them have something different to offer. Try fooling around with all three of them, and make an account if you want. With an account, you can keep track of the scores you get and buy songs using credits you earn in the FFR store. The only downside of the game is that many of the players have crazy skills, and a lot of the site is kind of geared towards them. However, for us who will never be as good as this guy, there are a bunch of easier songs to get you used to playing. Check out the Arcade section of songs in the first FFR version on the site for a bunch of fun game remixes to play. I'm signed up on the site as tondog38. If you sign up, shoot me a message there and we can set up challenges or something.

In honor of 300 coming out on DVD, Blu Ray, and HD DVD last week, the final game of the week is the aptly titled SPAAARTA!!! It's not the best game in the world, but it's cool if you're a fan of 300, mainly so you can kick some Persians into the hole and scream THIS IS SPAAAARRRTAAAA! The controls are simple, move around with the arrow keys, kick some ass with the S key, and do a little dance with the A key. All you need to do: kick the Persians into the hole and inform them that THIS IS SPAAAARTA all while not kicking your fellow Spartans.

Keep it on channel 3 for more fun, free games next week. Until next time, have fun.

People are entitled to their opinions, but sometimes people tend to take things to extremes. This weekend, Gaygamer.net, the internet's safe haven for homosexual gamers, was the target of a massive Denial of Service attack that successfully knocked their site offline. Here is their official statement on the attack:

Quote from: Flynn De Marco
Hello, faithful readers:

As you might have noticed, we have had some connection issues in the last few days and now the site is completely down. I'm sad to say that we have been the target of homophobic hackers. Thankfully, they didn't get to our database so all of our stuff is still in tact. At this point we are jut waiting for our service provider to ensure everything is good before putting the server back online.

Hopefully, this will be resolved by the end of this weekend, so please keep checking back. You can't keep a good gay gamer down, so we'll be back before you know it, serving up all the sassy game content you can handle.

Cheers,
Fruit Brute

You might not agree with homosexuality, you may feel it's immoral, but to take someone's site down over the issue, that's downright awful, and it is, in fact, a hate crime. I certainly hope the best for their site, and I hope they find the idiot who committed this crime. As Bob and Tom would say, I believe I can hear the sodomy bell off in the distance in his future.

KAHN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's quite a stir this week for drooling Blizzard fan boys the world over. Early in the week, German geeks uncovered what appears to be a FAQ written by Blizzard for the next World of Warcraft expansion, which will be titled Wrath of the Lich King. It will introduce Death Knights, a hero class which is more powerful than the regular classes, but needs to be unlocked first to be playable. It's a class that revolves around slaughtering the innocent in the name of evil. Bring on the fap. I'm ready.

Is it true? Yup. It was all made official at Blizzcon this afternoon and the web address now leads to this nifty little block of commercial glurge.

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath/

At least Blizzard comes out and confirms info after it gets leaked, rather deny it until the boxes are on store shelves (ehem, Sony). Now if they could just balance out the damn game as it is...

In other news, Guitar Hero 3 is shaping up. That looks to be of some serious quality. The song list includes songs by Slayer and Dragonforce. If only they would drop that agreement with Gibson, maker of the world's blandest looking guitars. Break out the B.C. Rich action.

Microsoft is STILL denying the 360 price drop, even though all of the major retailers already show it in their ads. Wow. Wait, didn't someone say this would happen last week? Oh, right. That was me. I'm infallible like the Pope, but better. I don't wear that gay hat, or lead an international conspiracy to molest young boys.

If you're into comic books, Wolverine finally killed Sabertooth in Wolverine, vol. 2, #55. No one seems to care. I can understand. It'll just turn out it was really a clone, or a skrull, or something. Or maybe the real Sabertooth will be regenerated by Apocalypse or Mr. Sinister. One way or another, it's comic book continuity. No one ever stays dead.

I'm talking about what happened in comic books. This is sad.

Eh, at least I'm not fat.

It seems that what The Hollywood Reporter said a week ago is coming true...Xbox 360 is getting a $50 price cut (For the Pro model. It's $30 if you're an Elite fan or $20 if you're going for the Core) next week.

Wait a minute! Didn't we go through this whole rigmarole a few weeks ago with Sony's PS3 price cut? We sure did, but what makes this round different? A ton more evidence and leaked ads...

Wal-Mart:

Toys "R" Us:

Circuit City:

And the latest rumor from today comes from a leaked email sent to GameStop stores.

What are these marketing materials mentioned? Hmm, I bet it's either Halo 3 posters or 360 price cut signage. My guess is that it's the latter because they've been promoting the crap out of the former for what seems like a year now and probably don't need more promo material for it. Plus it seems in line with what's being reported all over the internet.

Why cut the 360's price tag? Well, there are some very good reasons for them to do so right now. First, PS3 just got a hefty price cut, and a price cut will help the 360 look even more attractive to consumers. Second, it's been out for dang near 2 years without a price cut. Seems like a long time to me. Three, um, isn't there something coming out next month? I forget.

In light of all this evidence and my own speculation, I rule...
TONY'S JUDGEMENT: Definitely happening

Do you like things that are FREE?
Are you good at trivia? (i.e.: screenshots from movies and games)
Does the thought of getting something for free from answering trivia get you excited?
OR
Do you have games that are lying around and are of so low of a value that they aren't even worth selling and you would much rather just give them away?

Well then there is something special for you here at RF Generation. In the 'Idle Chatter' part of the forum there is a thread simply titled 'WIN FREE STUFF HERE!!!!!'. You can win free games just for guessing screenshots from movies and games. Anyone is welcome to post a giveaway. But please keep up your end of the bargain so that this runs smoothly. This is a fun way to recycle your games. If it's shipping that you're worried about, it costs around $2.00 to send a game first class. Due to the recent (as of May 14th, 2007) post office rate changes, it is cheaper to send it first class rather then media mail.
There have been four winners so far. Will the next one be you?

Posted under Site News, New Staff

This post is a long time coming. In the past few months we've added quite a few members to staff, but as far as I am aware of we've never introduced them. Well, today let me spend the time to introduce our new staff members, and officially welcome them into the community.

First off, I'd like to welcome the new hardware contributors, Marriott_guy and ApolloBoy, their enthusiasm for all things hardware related make them a welcome part of the team. We certainly hope that the hardware database will grow with their help.

Next, we've added quite a few European Staff members to the fold. Recently, Belgarath and Magewout were added to the fold, and sharp was welcomed back onto staff. They join the existing team of Speedy_NES and AndyC. To say that we are elated with these additions to the team would be an understatement. We are truly lucky to have these five enthusiastic people on board to help make sure the PAL database grows.

We've also added a new features writer and a new blog writer into the fold. Our new features writer OatBob and our new blog writer Tondog will strive along with the existing features and blog writers to make sure that the pages of our site have substance. I encourage you all to check out their work.

In addition to these new staff members, we've also moved some editors around to satisfy needs. AndyC has elected to assist in moving forward the European Database, and we enthusiastically grant his wish. Replacing AndyC in the hardware editor position will be Tan, who will also remain the blog editor as well. We wish both of these two the best of luck in their new positions.

So, let's officially welcome these new staff members to the team. With their help, the site will truly become something great.

Phantasy Star Collection

Hopefully that headline caught your attention and I don't lose my powers to present you with awesome features that consistently blow your mind.  This week is dedicated to the other Phantasy, the lesser known Phantasy, Phantasy Star. Oh boy see what I did there, that was awesome beyond all belief, using Phantasy instead of fantasy.

Ok then, moving on because I am growing tired. Our featured game is Phantasy Star Collection, which is essentially ports of Phantasy Star 1, 2, and that one that sucks. Our featured image is Phantasy Star Universe. From what I understand it is a highly addictive MMO set in the Phantasy Star universe. Sounds awesome. Our featured collectiont is that of ztaKxileF. Not only does he have a crazy username, he has a kickass collection which consists of, you guessed it, damn near every Phantasy Star game. Finally our featured piece of hardware is the LaserActive Mega LD. I'm not going to lie, I have no idea what it is. It has a crazy name, looks crazy, and there are a bunch of pictures of it. Also one user on this entire site owns it, which is awesome beyond all belief.

So there you have it, the features. I knew you guys were all excited for me to do the features again. Another week, another set of features as I say. Well, I should probably stop trying to waste space now and say that tagline. As always, keep it tuned to channel three.

Oh yeah, Shimra nor RFgeneration condone the killing of babies. Unless they refuse to give up their candy of course and you don't want to look like a wimp for not being able to steal candy from a baby.

Geeks, what is YOUR profession?!!!

Collecting movies, video games, and other pop culture crap people with lives don't have time to worry about.

That said, 300 comes out on DVD this Tuesday (7/31/07) in North America. I'll be buying the 2-disc special edition. Anyone who hasn't seen this movie should go buy it as well. You'll see first hand just how much of a man you can never be.

The Simpsons movie came out this week, as I'm sure you all know. I haven't seen it yet. I heard it was okay. Maybe after this, they can finally cancel the series and let it rest in peace. Seriously, when did The Simpsons jump the shark? Everyone stopped watching like 58 seasons ago.

The San Diego Comic Con has been running for the last 3 days and is sorta kinda wrapping up a little. There was a teaser for The Dark Knight which is reportedly about 45 seconds long and doesn't show any actual footage of the movie, just some artwork.

There was some Iron Man footage shown, but nothing really serious.

Of course, the biggest buzz is over the mysterious Cloverfield project, which still remains unnamed. There were four posters given away at the ComicCon, which bear the same image with 1 of 4 possible words scrawled across the top. This is what the poster looks like.

http://www.uploadhouse.co...c3fd185962d90e8c0181e.jpg

The rumor mills are spinning hard about an XBOX 360 price drop to compete with PS3. My psychic powers tell me it will happen. They also tell me Microsoft will deny the price drop up until the moment the tags are changed in the stores and possibly for some time after. Microsoft will also vehemently deny that the price drop has anything at all to do with the PS3's pricing, citing that they just wanted to make the console more affordable for purely humanitarian reasons, as they are dedicated solely to helping people world-wide.

Speaking of socialist lies, Kotaku is running a story about Chinese government regulations to limit the amount of time citizens play MMORPGs. Games that allow workers to simulate capitalist ideals? We can't have that! Chairman Mao would be proud.

http://kotaku.com/gaming/...ng-so-smoothly-283559.php

Next they'll make everyone use the same average green gear.

They probably execute players who roll Paladins.

I could go on all day with this.

To Hell with it. I'm going to the McDonald's drive-thru. Eat that, you poor commie bastards.

Posted under Modern Gaming, Eat Sleep Play, David Jaffe, Scott Campbell, Sony, Incognito, Twisted Metal

The big announcement David made is that he is leaving Sony Santa Monica/Sony to form a new independent studio with Scott Campbell of Incognito. Color me not surprised.

Eat Sleep Play will consist of David, Scott, and a bunch of key players from Incognito/Singletrac. Don't get all excited Nintendo and Microsoft fans, because Eat Sleep Play has a contract with Sony to publish 3 games exclusively for them. After that, however, who knows. I bet they extend that contract even further because everyone at that company is comfortable with how Sony handles their work. As David said in his blog entry on this subject:

Quote
Again, we are working with Sony and that just feels great. We met with some other interested parties but at the end of the day, Sony is our home, our family, and we're really thrilled and honored they wanted to work with us and continue the relationship we've spent almost 15 years cultivating. So in many ways, it's like very little has changed, other than the pay cut.

So I don't think they will be making stuff for Microsoft/Nintendo in the future. I'm sure they'll be exactly like Insomniac, a totally independent company that likes working with Sony.

The company's first project is an enhanced port of the PSP game Twisted Metal: Head-On for PS2. The game will also include 5-7 levels from the unreleased Twisted Metal Black: Part 2, and a documentary on the history of the series. Their first original game will be out sometime in 2008.

So, from all of RFGen, best of luck to David, Scott, and co with Eat Sleep Play, and we can't wait to see what you do in the future!

Posted under Site News, 30000 Games, Milestones, Thanks

July 26, 2007. On this day the RF Generation database passed 30000 games. Don't believe me? Look at the stats to the right of this post. Isn't that number large? Truly this number is a milestone to be marked and celebrated. From a database of about ten thousand games in 2004 to the 30000 game behemoth we are today, truly this milestone is a great one, and it couldn't have been done without you guys, our community.

Without our community this milestone would be insignificant, and with you guys we will celebrate the occasion. With your help, we certainly are becoming the classic and modern video games database that Michael Collins, Laurel Settee, Mark Hartholt, Mike Leon, Eddie Herrmann, and Rick Kuethe set out to create. Thank all of you, from staff to regular member to programmers to editors to directors, certainly we could not have gotten to this point without your help, and we are truly grateful.

Now is the time to celebrate, but it is also a time to look to the future! Help us get to 40000 games in the database. With your help, I am sure we'll make that milestone someday soon.

David Jaffe, the outspoken creator of the smash hits God Of War and Twisted Metal, has some kind of announcement planned for tomorrow. He will be posting it on his blog right after the press release comes out around 9 AM or so tomorrow morning (probably Pacific Time).

In his latest blog post, Jaffe says...

Quote
BIG ANNOUNCEMENT COMING FRIDAY...well big announcement for ME. It's not like I'll be revealing what game we've been working on, stuff like that. Well actually, I will be able to talk a little bit about ONE of the games for the first time...

[middle cut since he's talking about how he saw some family in Alabama and ate at Cracker Barrel.]

c- Friday-at 9am (PR wants to send the press release out before I post...so no 12:01 update)...but at 9am, I will post news of my future. Again, it's a big deal for me personally and it does deal with my work. So this week I'll be able to spill SOME of the beans...and I'll prob. spew about how I'm dealing with this very, very big change in my work life.

Hope to see ya'll soon!

David

ps. Just FYI, the game alot of you guys seems to think we are working on, we are not. Sorry to dissapoint Sad

So, he says it isn't what we think he's working on, so that rules out Twisted Metal 5 or Black 2 or whatever they're going to call it. David most likely isn't going to take on the directorial role in God of War 3, because he doesn't really want to make huge epics any more (though he'll probably maintain a supervisor role with Cory Barlog directing, like he did with God of War 2). The other possibility I'm hearing a lot is that he's leaving Sony, which is most likely not the case because David has stated many times that he has no intentions to leave Sony since they have been so good to him for the past 10 years or so.

Here's what I think will happen:

He's going to open up a new studio that will make games for Sony, and more specifically, the Playstation Network.

Here's my reasoning. After taking a month off from the blog in May (maybe due to his tirade against Gamespot and Joystiq), he posted this entry which consists of 2 pictures of an empty office space. In some of the next entries, he mentions having some big design tasks for his next game, but it's nothing too important to my argument. However on his July 1 blog entry, he posts a picture of some beer (...and weed) on a table and captions it with "How else do you expect us to celebrate signing a big, important, life changing contract?!?" That contract, probably with Sony and us meaning someone from Incognito (probably the head, Scott Campbell), since he's worked with them on many projects (including his most recent, Calling All Cars!).

That and David is pretty much one of Sony's biggest star developers, and I bet that they would be willing to listen to what he wants to do.

Anyways, now that my silly speculation is over, remember to keep it tuned on RFGen for all the news that matters.

Pinball

Another week means another week of features!  This week, we will take a look at a small part of the handheld market.  The featured game this month is Pinball.  This is a very quirky game where you get to play Pinball anywhere you want!  Well, in 1987, it was an awesome idea.  There have been many times that this game had kept me busy.  Okay, it still does sometimes!

The featured image of the week is from the Nintendo DS game Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.  I figured that since the new movie was released and the last book hit the shelves, it'd be a good time to feature one of the Harry Potter games.  The game is based off of the fourth book.  Although a tad easy in gameplay, it is a fun game to play through, especially if you like the Harry Potter series.

Our featured hardware is the poor Neo Geo Pocket Color.  The Neo Geo Pocket Color was a much maligned system that either came out too early or too late.  No one really seems to know.  It had some great games, like Bust-a-Move and Baseball Stars.  I think the biggest thing that hurt it was the price point of the parallel console system.  Many people equated Neo Geo with expensive.  That is why I have dubbed this system poor.

The featured collection this week goes to epv39.  Epv39 has quite a handheld collection, not to mention one of the cleanest and most organized collections on the site.  Take a look!

I think you all would agree that this is a very special week for the features.  I think this is the first time a game was featured that wasn't plugged into a console.  Make sure to check out the forums and keep it tuned in to channel 3!

Well, Boys and Girls, Harry Potter 7 is here. I know I'm pumped. Not. Of course you all know the big story in the nerd world this week was the leaking of the book onto teh intarnetz via BitTorrent. The hoopla surrounding this thing is absurd. There were actually people writing fake books, in some cases hundreds of pages long, and distributing them in place of the real thing. Almost equally disturbing, the proper bootleg copy was actually a set of JPEG photos taken via digital camera of each and every page of the book. Unholy Satan! Someone needs to get a job. You can have one of mine. I don't like them.

For those of you who don't already know, Harry dies. Hermione marries Malfoy. Ron is the last Horcrux and Snape is really Dumbledore in disguise.

Warning: there were spoilers in that last part. If you don't want to read them, skip it.

Next week the San Diego ComicCon is coming up. Interestingly, most of the comic related movies that were scheduled to be screened at the convention were pulled by Fox studios earlier this week. They apparently claimed the films weren't finished yet and refused to say anything further. It's fishy as hell and no one can even speculate about their real reasoning at the moment. One way or another, if you got tickets to ComiCon so you could see Aliens vs. Predator or Hitman early, you got screwed.

Also, for those of you who saw that bizarre, nameless movie preview before transformers (I mentioned it in this column a few weeks ago). Producer J.J. Abrams will be revealing the title of the film and possibly some more information at the ComiCon.

Until next week, I'll be crossing my fingers that great Cthulhu awakens from his death sleep to swallow the whole of civilization into his giant gaping maw.

A picture has surfaced online recently...

Look at the "mushroom cloud". It looks more like a Sweet Tooth cloud to me!

Twisted Metal coming to PS3 makes perfect sense. The last game came out more than 5 years ago, and David Jaffe recently mentioned on his blog that they are working on a Twisted Metal documentary for something he can't talk about.

If it's true, that will make Tony very happy as Twisted Metal Black is one of his favorite games on the PS2.

We've heard Hideo Kojima compare the PS3 to a movie theater while the 360 is like watching a movie on DVD and the Wii is like watching the movie on a TV channel. We've also heard him liken the PS3 to an expensive steak dinner at a formal restaurant, the Xbox 360 to a steak dinner at a casual restaurant, and the Wii to a steak dinner that you cook at home. Now, Jack Tretton has stolen Kojima's analogy bit and tried his hand at making one of his own*.

Quote
I think the PS3 is the Surf 'n Turf. You want the lobster and steak and you're going to give yourself the treat of getting the best thing on the menu. The PS2 is your favorite burger restaurant -- you go there for comfort food and it's just always good and is a good value.

[As for the other two consoles], one [Wii] is a lollipop, and I'm too old for lollipops. The other one [Xbox 360] I get sick from once in a while because the cook isn't always reliable.

Wow Jack! You make one Kojima-esque analogy, and you already shoot yourself up to being on his level! I applaud you. I especially love the bit about 360 being an unreliable cook. Not quite up to Kojima's previous analogies, but you're definitely getting there. Keep up the good work.

Man, all this talk of food makes me hungry for some steak smothered in PS3 Steak Sauce.
