RPG fans have likely heard much more of this composer than they realize. The stars aligned rather early in Motoi Sakuraba's composing career and he became one of the most respected Japanese composers of all time. However, he is one that is seldom discussed when compared to a few of his peers. Progressive rock has always been a massive influence on Sakuraba, and he was in a few bands of this style before he started composing for video games. He started his career by joining two other composers, Masaaki Uno and Yasunori Shiono at a a small, but talented developer called Wolf Team. At first, Wolf Team made games for popular Japanese PC systems of the time, namely the X68000 and MSX systems. The company made games of many different genres, and were known for making high quality games, and well done ports.

Before you begin to dig into another fine GameBoy article by MetalFRO, I would like to take a moment to congratulate this author on his acceptance of a staff writing position. We've been happy to promote some well-written articles from his personal blog and we are looking forward to many more great articles on our front page!

Just look at all the cool stuff on the front cover - Mario is
obviously in for a big adventure this time around!

It's quite timely that the 2015 edition of Review a Great Game Day is happening as I begin to cover the Game Boy library, especially since I'm trying to get the 5 North American launch titles out of the way in relatively short order.  Not that there's anything inherently wrong with them; far from it.  In general, the launch library was a demonstration of the baseline for what the Game Boy hardware could do.  Ultimately, many subsequent games released for the Game Boy would far and away eclipse the launch titles in terms of scope, size, graphics, sound and gameplay, as we'll discover together through this journey.  As most gamers know by now, however, the technical wizardry is only window dressing.  If the game isn't fun, it doesn't matter how pretty it looks or sounds.  Super Mario Land is a complete package - it looks good for its time, sounds good, and is loads of fun.

Wowwwwwwwwwwww! Submissions exploded into the database in May and our staff would like to take the time to thank all of you who submitted scans and information.  I'm sure we will be hearing from our administrators regarding the winner of the Pain Yourself With Submissions contest soon, but for now, let's take a moment to personally thank those who went above and beyond in their efforts in last month.

In May, we more than tripled the number of submissions in April with a whopping 6,469 submissions (up from 2,035 last month)!!!  Of these submissions, 4,411 were game submissions, and 2,058 were hardware submissions. Of these, 3,917 of them were images.  A big "THANK YOU" to all who contributed to the site in May and to the approvers who worked tirelessly to review and add these new additions to our continually growing database.

Our top submitters (those with a minimum of 100) for May were:
Zagnorch   2547   (Wowsa!)
Bildtstar   1782   (Double Wowsa!)
ericeskapade   355
josulli3   352

Flee   120
Shadow Kisuragi   115
leej07   107
monkees19   85

(Okay...so I was feeling a little generous this month)

Top approvers for the month included:
Bildtstar   2767  (Double Duty!)
Shadow Kisuragi   1348   (Whew!)
Flee   219
ApolloBoy   63

Thanks to everyone who submitted and put in overtime looking over these additions.  It's nice to see some fresh names on the submission side.  Please keep up the hard work throughout the year, since it's your efforts that make this site more user friendly and keep it up-to-date!

We felt it did a nice job of getting across what our business does at a quick glace. But what if we wanted to add other products or services to our offerings? How would be communicate that to customers in a simple and straightforward way?

When my parents took us to Toys R Us to buy a new Nintendo game when we were kids, one of my favorite parts of that trip was the drive home.  Holding the game, looking at the label, exploring the detail and nuance of the box and label art, reading each page of the manual, and even checking out the Nintendo Power special offer cards were all part of the experience of getting a new game.  That experience has changed quite a bit over the last 30 years.

Video games are expensive products to make. The multi-million dollar project is not uncommon in the modern game development industry, in fact it's become the standard. It's like proclaiming the cost of production is some kind of bragging right owed to the developer. But now it's become popular to discuss how minuscule a game's team was or how it was made of a six figure budget.

Super Mario 3D Land is an entry in the main series of Mario platformers. It was developed and published by Nintendo for their 3DS handheld console in 2011. This release was the first game in the Mario series to utilize stereoscopic 3D, which is what the 3DS's early years were all about! As usual, Nintendo's use of 3D on its own system is of the highest quality, and turning it on adds plenty of depth, which the level designers took advantage of throughout the game.

Toren is a game I've been looking forward to for quite some time. We might as well get the Ico comparisons out of the way now, since Team Ico's influence on this game is a big part of why I was anticipating it so much. In tone, story (or lack thereof) and setting, the likeness to Ico is undeniable. But thankfully, Toren never feels like a rip-off, nor does it try too hard to be like a Team Ico title. The developer Swordtales has done a commendable job in creating a unique experience here. But does it succeed at being an enjoyable game? Well, yes and no.

Public Security Section 9, or "Section 9" for short, stands as the most secretive and covert of Japan's Ministry of Home Affairs' internal groups. It exists as an anti-terrorist force capable of both defensive and offensive actions.  Its members are considered the "best of the best" in their respective fields, each cybernetically augmented for enhanced abilities in stealth, combat, intelligence, and communication.  Basically, these are among the most lethal people on the face of the earth.  Their newest member, you, is also considered among the elite, but due to your rookie status in Section 9, you still feel that you have to prove yourself.  Luckily, a mission has opened up, allowing you to show off your skills to the other members of Section 9, and thus justify your presence there.  Jump into your diminutive spider-like Fuchikoma robot tank and prepare...

What?

RFGeneration has long been a place where both retro and nowtro video game players and collectors can come together and share their love of the games.  However, there has always been a little bit of overlap into action figures, toys, comics, beer (I'm lookin at you nupoile), and Table Top games.  I thought it would be fun to talk about one of my favorites that I am always trying to get people to play with me.

This was a game even your grandmother could love.

Every video game console has at least one game that defines it.  One title that, above any other, people associate with it.  For modern consoles, it's often a launch title that soars above the rest in quality, or a later game that is exclusive to that system.  Usually, it's a great game that is universally hailed as something special.  For early consoles, that game often happened to be the pack-in title, i.e. the game that came with the system when you bought it.  In the case of the Game Boy, that game was Tetris.

This June, join Disposed Hero and singlebanana as we ratchet up the action with the Capcom classics, Mega Man 2 & 3 (NES/3DSVC & the Mega Man Anniversary Collection for GC/PS2/XBox) for the retro playthrough.  On the modern side, fill your hands for an all out assault to save the galaxy in the original Mass Effect (360/PS3/PSN/Steam/PC) with your hosts Fleach and GrayGhost81.

Help Wanted: Those who prefer to shoot first and ask questions later. Virtua City is looking to hire special detectives for missions that require fast trigger fingers. Recruits will be highly trained and put in great peril as they tackle the most dangerous missions to clean this city's dirty streets. Are you man enough to be a hero? Play as special detectives Michael Hardy and James Cools and take on a huge job that will clean the streets of futuristic, man-made Virtua City.

Again we travel to the lonely lands of Sega's oft forgotten home console, the Saturn. Virtua Cop started its life in the arcade and upon release became the latest in a long string of hits by Sega Amusement Machine Research and Development Department 2, or AM 2, in 1994. Virtua Cop is a genre defining game, as it broke new ground for on-rail light gun shooters by allowing far more interactivity with the enemies, based on where they are struck by a bullet. Different animations and scores come out for hitting different parts of the bodies of Virtua City's criminal scum. The graphics are also full, 3-D polygons, which is obviously what Yu Suzuki and crew used after the massive success of Virtua Fighter a year earlier.
