Overview

This system is supposed to be acceptable for ages 9-36 months. I don't think it is the most accurate age grouping but I'm not a marketing expert now am I?
Then again maybe they just mean the controller? Read on. ;)

The V. Smile Baby is a VERY simple system. Actually it seems to be a glorified Plug and Play...
  • AV cables are attached for quick hook-up. The system itself takes 4 AA batteries for power(or an AC Adapter, not included).
  • Its cartridge based and has storage slots for 4 games on the top of the system, 5 if you leave one in the cartridge slot.
  • Runs infrared so the controller is wireless which is a huge bonus with a young child.

  • From my so far limited experience with the titles released for the system the graphics and sounds seem be to very sub par. I have not used a Sega Pico in about 2 years but overall that system was better as far as audio/visual quality is concerned.

The controller is what makes this system worthwhile. Even if your child is too young to hold interest in or understand that the buttons they are pushing are effecting what is going on on the TV screen the controller will hold interest.
It is a behemoth. I couldn't give you exact measurements but it will take up an adults lap if your holding the child while playing. There are few buttons on it, which is good for a younger child. The more options they have the more likely they are to loose interest actually.

Kiddy buttons are: Yellow Star, Blue Triangle, Orange Circle, Green Square, Red Heart Action button, Blue/Yellow Rollerball.
Grownup buttons are: On/Off switch, TV Play/Play Alone switch, Exit.

It also has a slide tab so you can choose to interact with the "smartridge" (VTech is just so damn witty aren't they! :eye roll:) in three different ways. "Play Time", "Watch & Learn", and "Learn & Explore" there isn't much of a noticeable difference between the 3 modes but it does change some of the interactions on screen. Not the overall purpose of the system, which is education through primary colors and mediocre mono sound.

BUT as I stated above the possible saving grace for this system (at least if your child is as described above) is that the controller can be used without the console. That function is provided by the play alone button. The sound effects are relatively limited but it serves the purpose. Each button makes a couple different sound effects in addition to saying either the name of the shape and/or color of the shape. The roller and action button just make sounds.

Retail on this is $40. Individual titles I believe range from 10-20 retail. If you really want your child to start "gaming" this early go ahead and shell out the cash a Pico would probably be a more worthwhile investment when they get to the 3-5+ Age bracket though.

But really there is no substitute for parent child interaction.
