After what seems like an eternity, Lucas (my shelving friend) and I got together after conflicting schedules over the last few weeks and started work on the shelving. We finalized the plans, did a lot of measuring and marking, cut a few boards and put up a solid frame to start with. Heres some pics of what we did so far:

The plan is to finish building and mounting the shelves on wednesday evening. After that I'll probably take a day or two to paint it and then I'll finally be able to start filling it!!

this will be one of the first things I do when I build my house in the future, I would prefer in the basement so I can have a rec room/gaming room combo

Looks like a great start, it'll look awesome once it's finished. In what color are you going to paint the shelves?

I'm going to paint the shelves black also

@Crabmaster2000: If your house gets as dusty as mine, reconsider. I had some shelves painted black and they are a royal pain in the ass to keep clean. Even the smallest bit of dust will stick out like a sore thumb. It looks like the wood you got is poplar, which isn't the best for staining, so if I were you, I'd paint it red or white to give a little bit of contrast to the room and really make the contents of the shelves pop out.

I'm painfully aware of the drawbacks to having the shelving black (its actually pine) and if it becomes to much of a hassle I can always repaint. I've got a reddish-brown color as back up if the black turns out to be not so good.

With the new location we've moved to and the low amount of traffic coming in and out of the game room I'm hoping the dust level will be minimum. Could just be hopeful wishing on my part though.

Looking forward to more updates on this.

Just heard that my builder has to postpone tonight (again, grrr). We are shooting for Saturday hopefully.

Black walls, depressing. Doesn't look too bad so far though.

We've now been postponed to Tuesday. Im very sad about that.....

Looking good.  I wasn't really sure about the black paint at first.  BUT I think I like it alot, now that I look at it a little more.

Very cool, can't wait to see it all come together.
