Overview:
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Lance for the Commodore 64 is an action/adventure game developed by US Gold and published by Strategic Simulations, Inc. in 1988. While it is generally considered one of the "Gold Box" titles, it is in fact not, but rather the first of three of what is generally know as the "Silver Box" games, due the different colored packaging and emphasis on pure action.
Gameplay is entirely from the side-view. The player controls a party of eight characters, though only one at a time. The player to swap characters at any time via a submenu to better manage health and resources, which can require more effort than in most action/adventures games due to the high difficulty. Despite this the game was received well on the Commodore 64.
The plot is based on a small section of the first Dungeons & Dragons Dragonlance novel, Dragons of Autumn Twilight, and follows the "Companions of the Lance" as they delve in the ruins of doomed Xak Tsaroth to retrieve the Disks of Mishakal.
