Review:
Super C combines elements of both role-playing and strategy games with richly colored FMV cut scenes and a beautiful one-hundred piece orchestra score, all to tell one of the most poignant and thought provoking stories in all of video-gamedom.

Super C is about kicking ass and taking names. It's a game where players shoot first, shoot some more, think about asking questions, and then decide instead just to continue shooting. Questions are for pansies anyway. So pack your machine gun, bring a toe tag, and bring a body bag, because Super C will blow you away!
The game works like this: Players take the role of Mad Dog (Player 1) or Scorpion (Player 2). These guys are the commandos from Contra (to which this game is a sequel). Apparently evil aliens have taken control of the army and are trying to take over the world. Mad Dog and Scorpion have to save the planet by pumping thousands of rounds of lead into everything that moves. The premise is fantastic. It consists of just shooting everything. If there is an alien, shoot it. If there is a helicopter, shoot it. If there is a puppy, shoot it.
People ask: "What about the game-play, Leon? Isn't that just mindless button mashing?" No. No it is not mindless button mashing. While not as difficult as it's predecessor, Super C demands a very high skill level of it's players. Players have to stay on their toes at all times to avoid enemy bullets and monsters, while pulling the trigger as fast as possible to blast the guts out of the alien army.
Super C has great graphics for an NES game. They're better than the graphics in the original game and slightly ahead of most other games of the time. The sound is also good. Video game music junkies love to blare the Super C soundtrack at extra high volume even now, almost fifteen years later. The problem here is the game is so much fun to play that you don't notice how good the graphics and sound are. You might not even notice there are graphics. You'll be too busy killing things.
In closing, it's just too bad there aren't games like this anymore. Super C is clearly a product of the eighties. It has big guns, big hair, and lots of tasty violence. This game is a beautiful reminder of that golden era of excess to which most of us owe our current video game obsession. The only thing missing is a no-holds-barred fight between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev on top of the Berlin wall, with the loser plummeting to their death hundreds of feet below. But you just can't have everything.
