Overview:
The game about the opposum with a huge sword. And a jet pack. And a lust for blood.
Review:
Rocket Knight Adventures is a fast passed action game for the Sega Genesis. The premise of the game is simple. You play as a knight, who is also an opposum named Sparkster, and you are out to stop the bad guys from kidnapping the princess. Cliche? Hell no! This game's main character is an opposum.
The game is a sidescrolling action fest. Your character has the ability to slash his opponents with a sword or charge up his attack for a relatively short yet effect burst of energy. What really sets this game apart from your typical action game is the inclusion of Sparkster´s jetpack. You have the ability to charge it up and shoot Sparkster forward at incredible speeds, or you can shoot him in one of eight different directions such as diagnol. The levels themselves are all unique and varied. Some are your typical adventure through a wooded area while other levels have you flying across the ocean taking out the hydra which crosses your path. Needless to say, there is much fun to be had with this little gem.
As I mentioned before, the jetpack is what really sets this game apart from the rest of the crowd. The jetpack increases the pacing of the game tenfold and adds a whole new layer of strategy to the epic fights which Sparkster will come across. Furthermore, Sparkster has the ability to hang from trees and ledges then plummet down with lightning speed thanks to his jetpack. With such easy to learn controls and really intuitive gameplay it´s no wonder why this game is a cult classic.
Rocket Knight Adventures is a fantastic game all around. If anything though, the level designs can be a bit cumbersome and simplistic. Don´t get me wrong though, the game is fantastic, it´s just with a little more polish it could have easily been the best sidescroller on the Genesis.
