Mars Matrix is a 2D vertically-scrolling shooter from Capcom that came out in 2001 for the Sega Dreamcast. Not surprisingly, the game (also released in the arcades) is heavy on shooting and light on story. The back of its case describes it as follows:
Half a century has passed since the colonization of Mars. Life on teh red planet is productive and peaceful. Earth has placed the Mars Development Agency (MDA) in control of Mars' self-governing sectors, yet retains a tight grip on its colony. Without warning, an ominous transmission is received on Earth declaring Martian independence and all contact with Mars is lost. Now, the threat of war with Mars has Earth seeing red. Massive fleets of experimental, yet overly powerful new fighters are on their way to Mars on a mission that could escalate into inter-planetary war.
Other than this weak attempt at plot, Mars Matrix centers around blowing up as many enemy ships as possible while upgrading your ship's weapons. The game supports two players. Each time a level is completed, points are added up to a total score, which is saved to a VMU. These points can then be used in-game to "purchase" extra play modes and options like infinite continues.
