Feel the Magic: XY/XX is notably one of the first DS titles to make use
of both the touch screen and microphone. It is a very clever and highly
addictive game, definitely one that has set a new standard for gameplay.
Feel the Magic follows a good old fashioned "win the girl, rescue
the girl, save the girl's life" storyline. In between skits you have to play through
a mini-game or a series of mini-games to get to the next skit point. First you must win
the girl's attention. After having won her attention you keep her interest by impressing her.
Eventually she's kidnapped and you then must rescue her. The situations range from potentially
dangerous to life threatening. The mini-games range from very simple to "I'm going to break this thing." Some
have a classic feel while others are more futuristic and fast-paced. A few where
the object is to touch "X" to make them disappear remind me of Duck Hunt (NES) for some reason.
There is a little bit of everything to be had with Feel the Magic.
There are 3 different modes of gameplay. Story Mode is the core of the game. The skits are
followed by a mini-game or series of mini-games. The further along you get in Story Mode, the
more Memories you'll have. Memories mode is a collection of mini-games you've cleared in Story.
Maniac really isn't a game mode, more like a Barbie dress-up mode if you will. Here you can swap
the girl's clothes with clothes you've unlocked. Clothing can be unlocked by finding Hidden Rabbits
in Story Mode or by playing Memories. Some clothing can be unlocked by turning on Feel the Magic
with certain Sega GBA titles in the GBA slot.
Both the graphics and music are reminiscent of a 70's disco. The colors are very urban funk if
you can "dig it". Skits are cleverly drawn out in comic book fashion while clearly getting the
point across with a few small scenes. It is both simple and beautiful in an artsy fashion. The
controls range from simple to difficult depending on the mini-game being played and how steady of
a hand the player has. Some require tracing or touching exact points on the screen while others
give the player a bit of leeway. When voice is used to control the action the control is very simple.
When breath is used it'll be easier for some. For those that get dizzy easily it may prove slightly
more difficult to complete the scene. Overall Feel the Magic is everyone's game.
