Review:

Rayman Origins is a 2D platformer set in a gorgeous, hand-drawn world. The game features four player drop in/out co-op and a pixel-perfect control setup. While Rayman Origins starts off with pretty basic gameplay (Simply run and jump to the end), it adds new gameplay mechanics regularly. By the end of the game, you will feel like a platforming master. For those who are already platforming geniuses, there are numerous levels that will test every bit of your skill. In addition to "Tricky Treasure" levels that often require near-perfect jumps, there is a level that will provide a challenge that even masters of the platforming genre will have trouble passing on their first attempt.

In a touch of brilliance, the game has no "lives", so you cannot lose a level unless you quit. You simply restart at the last checkpoint you've passed. In addition to that excellent feature, there are numerous different types of gameplay levels. In addition to the standard underwater courses (which are actually great fun and play very well, unlike nearly every other underwater level in a platformer), there are levels that simply task you with collecting as many Lums, this game's form of coins, as possible. There are even levels that play like a sidescrolling shoot 'em up.

Rayman Origins has numerous worlds, with each offering a unique setting. With deep, beautiful backgrounds and incredible animation, you will definitely not mistake this title as a last-gen game. In addition to the visual treat that is Rayman Origins, your ears will be pleasantly soothed as well. The music fits each world, and it is incredibly varied. With numerous instruments and sounds coming through the speakers, it is almost as if each world is a different genre of music. Some of the music is so catchy that I still hum it nearly six months after playing it.

After completing the main game, you have the option of playing through the platforming levels with a certain time to beat. In addition to adding more gameplay, you will notice how well designed the levels are. The game has a great amount of content, especially for a platformer. I found the replay value to be high.

Rayman Origins is a unique game nowadays. Gameplay in 2D has pretty much died on consoles, and with a few exceptions, so have platformers. While Ubisoft could have easily taken advantage of this low market saturation by producing an average game, they instead went above and beyond. There is no doubt in my mind that this was a labor of love, and it shows in nearly every detail. Rayman Origins is easily one of the greatest platformers of all time, and it is certainly a game that no one should pass up, even those who dislike this type of game. Unfortunately for Ubisoft, the game's sales number have been disappointing to say the least. If you ever have the chance to play this game, do not pass up this gem. I honestly do not have any fault whatsoever with the game. It is that good.
